Div 1 Playoff Final & Presentation night – 3/5th June 2015

Station B take playoff title and Higgins entertains in season finale

Station Road B have taken the Window Outlet Cockermouth and District Snooker League Division One playoff title with a 4-2 win over Workington Golf Club.

A great atmosphere in Flimby Club set the scene for a fantastic final and with a thumping 70-0 victory for Shaun Ayre in the first frame against the Golf Club’s Bryan Walker the league champions were off and rolling.

Station B’s Simon Frazer built a good lead in frame two nevertheless Mark Cowen clawed it back he took the game to the black. Attempting a thin cut with the rest it was all or nothing but as the black stopped over the pocket Frazer cooling knocked it in for a 64-56 win.

A crucial third frame for the Golf Club looked like going the way of Station B with Peter O’Hagan laying a snooker on the Golf Club’s Rob Sim with just the brown remaining. Needing all the balls Sim swerved around the pink, potted the brown and cleared for a 48-44 win.

The Golf Club’s Phil Sorfleet gave Alan McLeod little opportunity in frame four and with breaks of 24 and 38 he won with room to spare, 69-27 for a 2-2 match scoreline.

Mark Brasted saw a couple of good chances go begging in the next against Station B’s Tony Elliott. These missed opportunities needed little encouragement for the Station B cueist as Elliott upped his game for 56-16 victory.

Frame six looked like going the way of the Golf Club as Ian Fulton applied the pressure onto Station B captain, Stephen O’Hagan. However, O’Hagan had no thoughts of letting the tie go to a decider as he held his nerve to take the frame, match and title with a 62-46 win.

Just two days later the four time World Snooker Champion, John Higgins provided the finishing touch to a superb Window Outlet Cockermouth & District Snooker League 14/15 season with a classy display in front of a packed Workington Golf Club crowd.

Over the last eight years the presentation night developed into an end of season celebration looked forward to by all and the 26 time ranking event winner didn’t disappoint.

Higgins played nine engrossing frames making countless 50 plus breaks as he stroked the cue ball around the table. Walking away undefeated Higgins showed why he is still one of the best players in the world. A brilliant maximum attempt by Higgins in frame five had the crowd holding their breath but in breaking down on 104 it was Flimby’s Paul Vickers who added his own piece of glory as he cleared with 31.

The Scottish snooker legend also opened up to the crowd as he took questions from audience members giving his answers on a wide range snooker subjects .

Throughout the night the current world number 11 endeared himself to everyone, posing for photos and signing autographs while ending the evening by presenting the season’s trophies.

The night was not only about snooker though, as the evening also raised much needed funds for Hospice at Home, West Cumbria. The vital work that the organisation provides sometimes goes largely un-noticed but the support offered by this years presentation was welcomed with open arms by Hospice at Home Finance and Fund-Raising Administrator, Stella Walsh.

The successful raffle produced a figure of £300 to which Mrs. Walsh said, “I would like to thank Kevin and all concerned at The Window Outlet Cockermouth and District Snooker League because without help from nights like this our job would be extremely difficult”

League Chairman and MC for the evening Kevin Basnett quoted, “John Higgins was a gentleman and made time for everyone, no matter what the request”. Basnett added, “However, yet again, it feels immensely rewarding to be able to use the league to raise much needed funds for another fantastic charity. As I’ve said before it all started in 2007 and our total now stands at £7675 of which the league couldn’t be more proud of”.

Eight months in the planning of the presentation evening didn’t come together however without the help of some important people namely, Ken Harper of Workington Golf Club, league treasurer Dave Chapman and league secretary Andrew Mitchelhill, who all played their part in an efficiently run event.

Finally though, the league stressed that the evening wouldn’t have been possible without the support of the leagues sponsors, Graeme Pritt & Ann-Marie of The Window Outlet, Workington (01900 873555), Alan Cannan of JA Cannan Ltd (Solid Fuel Flue Specialist – Tel: 01900 601197) and Leigh Musgrave of Leigh Musgrave Roofing (01946 833537). Basnett quoted “I’m delighted that the league continues to improve while maintaining its charitable support but I cannot thank John, Graeme, Ann Marie, Alan & Leigh enough for the backing they have offered in making this night possible”.

Division 2 Playoff Final – May 20th 2015

United Front

Workington’s United Club have claimed the Window Outlet Cockermouth and District Snooker League Division 2 playoff title with a 4-3 win over runaway league winners Maryport Social.

In probably their best performance of the season a deciding frame win for United’s Richard Nelson over the division’s leading player, Ryan Ismay enabled the Workington side to finish the campaign on a high albeit in dramatic circumstances.

In the first frame Social’s Ismay went about his business with his thoughts far away from the fact that he had been drawn out for a possible decider as he defeated Paul Johnston 66-45 to take his team 1-0 up.

Frame two saw Social’s Andrew Henderson produce the greater pot success rate but it was United’s Clive Lister who potted the more crucial balls and he ran out a 48-34 winner.

In the next United super sub Willie Fearon delivered the performance of the night as in missing little he beat Maryport captain, Colin Sealby with room to spare, 63-25.

At 2-1 up United Club star player Andrew Mitchelhill was another to do well on the pot success but in not capitalising on his chances it was Social’s Paul Lister took the frame 66-41.

Maryport’s John Fleming led the fifth frame all the way into the colours however it was United’s Dave Chapman who steadfastly hung in to take an important 3-2 match lead with a 62-54 victory.

The final frame of regulation play produced another shock as Social’s Craig Stuart beat United’s Richard Nelson convincingly, 30-66 to take the final into a one frame decider.

In the decider Richard Nelson had the opportunity to right his previous frame loss in quick fashion and with his safety game proving to be the telling factor he swept aside the division’s stand out player 56-26 for a superb, frame, match and title victory.

Playoff semi-finals – May 20th 2015

Playoff finals decided

Window Outlet Cockermouth and District Snooker League playoff semi-finals took place this week with division one tie between Workington Cons and Workington Golf club producing the biggest surprise.

Finishing second in the league Cons were rightly placed as favourites against Workington Golf Club, a tag that was largely due to the fact that had gone through the whole season unbeaten but it was the Golfers who romped home 4-0 to reach the final. Star performer on the night was the golf clubs Rob Sim with breaks of 52 and 30 in his first frame victory over division one leading player Richard McCarthy.

In the other division one semi-final between league champions Station Road B and John Street Club a gutsy performance by the fourth placed side went to no avail as Station B yet again demonstrated their strength in depth with a 4-2 victory. Top performers on the night were Station B’s Peter O’Hagan with a break of 40 in his frame win over Paul Graham and John Street’s Kevin Basnett with contributions of 47 & 26 in his victory over Alan McLeod.

In the division two semi’s runaway league title holders Maryport Social made short work of Keswick’s Derwent Club as they moved into next weeks final with a 4-1 win. Fronting the charge for the Social side, Leading Player, Highest Break and Break Aggregate winner, Ryan Ismay netted a frame winning contribution of 30. Not to be left out however team mate Paul Lister produced the classiest display of the night as breaks of 37 and 25 allowed him to defeat Derwent veteran, Joe Bell with room to spare.

The other division two semi-final also went to form as Workington’s United Club defeated fellow townies Senhouse Street Club. The second versus third place tie didn’t see the favourites have it all their own way as the United Club fell over the line, 4-3.

Week 30 matches  – May 13th 2015

Sim takes singles Cup and both league titles are decided

A busy week in the Window Outlet Cockermouth and District Snooker League saw the Individual Handicap Trophy decided along with the division one and two titles.

In the Leigh Musgrave Roofing Contractors sponsored Individual Handicap trophy Workington Golf Club’s Robert Sim overcame Station Road A’s Mike Walker 4-1,  while Station Road B took the division one title and Maryport Social the division two championship.

In the singles handicap Sim (H’cap Scr) took the first frame in decisive fashion with a superb break of 75 quickly followed by a contribution of 31.

The second frame was a closer affair as Walker (H’cap +25) maintained a slight lead throughout the frame with some fine safety play.  However, a missed red left Sim an easy opener from which he constructed a break of 22 to leave Walker requiring snookers.  Despite a few close attempts Walker was unable to find a telling enough attempt and the frame ultimately went to Sim.

Walker made a brighter start to the third frame with an early break of 24 to help him take a commanding lead.  Some fine safety play from Walker denied Sim the opportunity to counter as the Station Road player took the frame convincingly 71-19 to leave the match finely balanced at 2-1.

A superb long opening red allowed Sim to seize control of the match once again as he produced a break of 54 to overtake the handicap deficit. This ultimately proved to be the difference with the Golf club cueist taking the frame 81-38.

In what ended up being the final frame of the match it was Sim again who made the most of his chances. With a couple of 20+ breaks he forged his way ahead and eventually took the frame 87-53 for a satisfying title victory.

In the league Station Road B’s division one title claim never looked like slipping in the final week and with a 6-0 win over division two’s Derwent club they retained the title in style. Top scorers on the night all came from Station B with Shaun Ayre (39), Simon Frazer (28) and Peter O’Hagan (40) all making recordable contributions. Keswick’s Derwent Club kept their top four playoff spot in division two.

In the cross divisional format top tier side Workington Cons drew 3-3 against division two’s Workington Legion. The leagues point a frame format could probably go down as a bit of a frustration for the Cons side as even though they finished the only undefeated side in the league this season they couldn’t quite gain enough points to lift them from second. It was still a successful night for the Cons however as a win from Richard McCarthy allowed him to take the division one leading player award.

Division one third place went to Workington Golf Club with a 4-2 win over relegated Station RoadA. A break of 33 went to the Golf Club’s Ian Fulton but it was another break of 33 from new singles champion Rob Sim that had the most significance as it allowed him to take the division one break aggregate trophy.

John Street Club survived a playoff place scare as they defeated division two champions Maryport Social 4-2. John Street captain Kevin Basnett was the only break maker with 31.

Division one’s Seaton Legion put up a good playoff place fight and managed to win 4-2 at division two’s Senhouse Street but with a two point deficit to overcome it wasn’t quite enough to overtake John Street and they finished fifth. Breaks came from Seaton’s Paul Mostyn and Mike Dawson with a brace of 29’s. The defeat wasn’t all bad for Senhouse as they kept third in division two to make next weeks playoffs.

Finally, Flimby defeated Aspatria’s Sun Inn 5-1 to end their season on a high. Even though the Flimby outfit were already relegated they were not downbeat with Paul Vickers shining thanks to a break of 46. Sun Inn’s Andrew Scott also contributed to the breaks with 27 as his team finished sixth in division two.

Week 29 matches – May 6th 2015

Station B almost there

Workington’s Station Road B took full advantage of their game in hand in the Window Outlet Cockermouth and District Snooker league division one this week with a 6-0 victory over division 2’s second placed United Club.

With division one second placed Workington Cons without a game the whitewash takes Station B a massive 6 points ahead with just one game left. Nothing short of a miracle can stop Station B taking the title even though it is still mathematically possible for the undefeated Cons side to do it in the leagues point a frame format. Station B brothers Peter and Stephen O’Hagan were the only break makers in the match with a pair of 29’s.

Division one’s Workington Golf Club pretty much assured themselves of third spot with a 4-2 win over division two’s Senhouse Street Club. The Golf Club’s Rob Sim produced one of the frames of the season as contributions of 60 & 65 allowed him to defeat David Bracken 115-0 in the campaigns most one sided encounter.

With the division two championship already sewn up Maryport Social relaxed a little too much and they were trounced 5-1 by division one’s relegated Flimby Social. More performances like this may have seen the Flimby side safe this season but it was captain fantastic, Geoff Banton who produced his teams’ best performance yet again with a brace of 25 breaks in his thumping win over John Fleming.

Station Road A drew with Aspatria’s Sun Inn 3-3. The result unfortunately didn’t do anything for either teams’ league positions as Station A remain bottom of division one and the Sun Inn stay sixth in division two.

Seaton Legion continued their fine form of late to produce yet another convincing win, this time 6-0 over division two’s Derwent Club. Seaton’s first 6-0 of the season sees them in with a shout for a division one top four playoff spot. Due to the lead they held over Workington Legion Keswick’s Derwent Club are already assured of a division two top four playoff spot.

Finally, John Street crashed to a 4-2 defeat against lower divisional opponents Workington Legion to threaten the division one sides top four playoff hopes. A great performance for the division two side saw Andrew McMullen (22) and Mark Lavin (44) make the games only recordable contributions. Legion are now guaranteed fifth in division two.

Maryport Labour had no fixture.

Week 28 matches – Apr 29th 2015

Station B draw level

Workington’s Station Road B drew level with division one leaders Workington Cons in the Window Outlet Cockermouth and District Snooker league this week on the back of a 6-0 victory over division two’s Workington Legion.

Station B powered their way to victory against the legionnaires with their dominance highlighted in a superb performance by Peter O’Hagan. Breaks of 46 & 42 took the Station Road cueist to the top of the break aggregate table for the first time this season with just two matches to go. The only other recordable contribution of the evening came from O’Hagan’s team mate, Mark Tunstall with a break of 39. Legion stay fifth in division two.

A 4-2 win over division two’s United Club for Workington Cons kept them at the top of division one. However having played one more match than Station B even a 6-0 win in their last fixture against Workington Legion next week would only give them with a slim chance of taking the title. Cons’ Alan Moore top scored with a break of 26 but fell foul to a re-spotted black defeat by United’s Clive Lister. Moore’s defeat saw him drop to second in the leading player averages with team mate Richard McCarthy replacing him. Workington’s United Club keep their second place in division two.

Workington Golf Club produced breaks of 30 (Bryan Walker), 47 (Rob Sim) and 28 (Mark Brasted) in their 5-1 victory over Aspatria’s Sun Inn. The Golf Club are still third in division one with the Sun also unmoved in sixth in division two.

Division ones John Street Club kept their fourth place playoff spot with a 4-2 win over Keswick’s Derwent Club. The match produced one of the performances of the season as Derwent’s Mark Forsyth rattled in breaks of 38 & 21 to sweep aside powerless John Street captain Kevin Basnett. Derwent remain fourth in division two.

Flimby’s Paul Vickers made a break 32 and Senhouse’s Sandy Smith a contribution of 22 in each of their frame wins this week. This balance was also reflected in the match score and the two team’s ended up locked a 3-3. Flimby are already relegated from division one in seventh place with Senhouse looking increasingly like finishing third in division two.

Finally, a Ryan Ismay frame win that included a break of 20 not only sees him take division two’s leading player title but barring something extraordinary his recordable contribution should also ensure he claims the break aggregate title as well. Nevertheless it wasn’t all good for his Maryport Social side as the division two champions went down 5-1 to Seaton Legion. Seaton’s Mark Tatton made the only of the break of the evening with 32. Seaton stay fifth in division one.

Station Road A and Maryport Labour both had no fixture.

Week 27 matches – Apr 22nd 2015

Cons go top

Workington Cons moved to the top of the Window Outlet Cockermouth and District Snooker League division one this week with a 5-1 home win against Maryport Labour.

As long term division one leaders Station Road B were without a game this week Cons made short work of the division two bottom side.  Cons’ Alan Moore starred with breaks of 33 and 35 to maintain his place at the top of the leading player averages.

Division one third placed Workington Golf Club won 5-1 against division two leaders Maryport Social with the highlight coming in the first frame as a Rob Sim break of 25 proved to be too much for Social’s Ryan Ismay ( 21 break).

John Street still sit in a division one fourth place on the back of a 4-2 home win against Workington’s United Club. A frame winning break of 21 by Andrew Mitchelhill proved to the United Club’s best but it was John Street captain Kevin Basnett who stole the show with contributions of 30, 32 & 38 in dominant victory over Clive Lister.

Division one’s Station Road A produced a convincing 5-1 away victory over Senhouse Street Club, however as the top tier side only have two games left and stand fifteen point below Seaton Legion they are now destined for relegation. Top breaks in the match came from Senhouse’s Manny Stalker with 22 and Station A’s Mike Walker and John Teasdale with contributions of 21 and 40 respectively. Senhouse remain third in division two.

Flimby Social crashed to a 4-2 home defeat against division two’s Derwent Club and along with Station A are also looking at life in the second tier next season. Putting in a captain’s performance Flimby’s Geoff Banton was the top scorer in the fixture as a 28 break enabled him to beat Derwent’s Mick Brown. Derwent keep their division two playoff place in fourth.

Finally, Seaton Legion kept themselves in with a sniff of making the division one top four playoffs with a 5-1 win over division two’s Workington Legion. Seaton cueists Paul Mostyn and from Karl Newton produced the only recordable contributions of the tie with breaks of 27 & 33.

Station Road B and Sun Inn both had no fixture.

Doubles Handicap Final & week 26 matches – Apr 14/15th 2015

Robertson and Hunter take Doubles Crown

Mark Robertson and Chris Hunter (+30 handicap) have claimed the Leigh Musgrave Roofing sponsored Cockermouth and District Snooker League handicap doubles title with a 4-2 win over Mike Walker and Tom Thompson (+29).

In the first frame a 22 break by Hunter was enough to leave Walker and Thompson needing snookers with just the colours remaining. A couple of successful attempts left Walker and Thompson in with a chance but with the frame reaching the blue it was Robertson who took his side over the line for a 57-30 frame win.

Frame two was a scrappy affair that again went down to the last three balls. Facing a long pot on the blue Walker stroked it in, potted a tricky thin cut pink from distance and finally a very difficult black from the side cushion to take the match to 1-1 with a 64-50 victory.

Robertson and Hunter were presented with many chances in frame three but as neither of them could manage to capitalise it was Walker and Thompson who romped to a easy frame win, 64-11.

At 2-1 down Robertson and Hunter had time to reflect and as the frame moved on they built a small lead. With a 16 point lead with just the blue remaining it was Hunter who finished the frame off with a fine long pot for a 51-29 victory.

A break of 30 by Hunter in frame five gave his team useful advantage but with Thompson rising to the challenge he helped his side claw their way back into the game. As the black remained Thompson and Walker had the chance of forcing a re-spot nevertheless it was Robertson who held his nerve to slot the final ball home in a 57-43 victory.

The final frame of the match saw Hunter make most of the play. Taking pretty much everything he was presented with Hunter took his team 20 up with one red remaining. A pot on the red but a foul on the blue by Thompson sealed his team’s fate as Hunter and Robertson mopped up the balls they required for 59-26 frame, match and title win.

In the Window Outlet sponsored league division one top team Station Road B produced a break filled 4-2 win over run away division two leaders, Maryport Social. Contributions of 27 (Simon Frazer), 25 (Alan McLeod), 67 (Peter O’Hagan) and 29 (Stephen O’Hagan) showed the Station B side’s class. Nevertheless Social weren’t without a star performance as Paul Lister delivered a confident break of 47 in his win over Shaun Ayre. Maryport Social still hold a massive 17 point lead in division two.

Division one second placed Workington Cons could only manage one recordable break in their 5-1 win over division two’s Derwent Club with Julian Plaza making 31 in his victory over Carl Arthur. The league’s only undefeated side now sit just three behind Station B in the leagues point a frame format. Keswick’s Derwent Club stay fourth in division two.

Kevin Basnett added breaks of 46 and 38 to his season total as his John Street side won 4-2 against division two’s Senhouse Street Club. John Street are fourth in division one with Senhouse third in division two.

Seaton Legion pretty much secured their division one status for next season with a 4-2 home victory over Aspatria’s Sun Inn. At 15 points ahead of relegation placed Flimby Social only an almighty collapse would prevent survival.

Finally division two wooden spoon placed Maryport Labour crashed to their eighth 6-0 defeat of the season, this time over fellow divisional opponents Workington Legion. At six points behind Keswick’s Derwent Club in fifth the Legion still have a slim chance of making the playoffs.

Division one’s third placed Workington Golf Club and division two’s second placed United Club both had no fixture.

Week 25 matches – Apr 8th 2015

Station B draw keeps lead

Station Road B maintained their division one four point lead in the Window Outlet Cockermouth and District Snooker League this week with a 3-3 draw against fellow Workington side John Street Club.

Victories for Station B’s Simon Frazer, Shaun Ayre & Stephen O’Hagan and John Street’s Paul Graham and Kevin Basnett took the match score to 3-2. The last frame of the evening proved to be a good one for John Street as Steve Garroway defeated singles semi-finalist Peter O’Hagan in a nail biting finish to tough contest. John Street stay fourth in division one.

Division one second placed Workington Cons needed a final frame victory by Alan Moore, which included a break of 26, for a 3-3 draw at Seaton Legion to keep their unbeaten record intact. Other recordable contributions came from Seaton’s Paul Mostyn with 25 and Cons’ Julian Plaza with 29. Seaton are still in a division one fifth place.

Even though Flimby Social won 4-2 at home against division two’s Maryport Labour they still remain at the foot of the division one table. A Paul Vickers frame winning break of the 32 demonstrated that the Flimby side certainly aren’t without quality but it will still take a remarkable run of results for them to avoid the drop. Maryport Labour prop up division two in seventh.

On the subject of relegation, Station Road A defeated division two’s United Club 4-2 at home however at twelve points adrift they also look likely second tier candidates for next season. Top scorers in the fixture were Station A’s Tom Thompson with 43 and United’s Clive Lister with 34 (even though he was defeated by Grant Porter).

Division two’s Senhouse Street cemented their position in the top four with 4-2 win at home to Keswick’s Derwent Club. A defeat for the lakesiders still keeps them in the division two top four playoff places as fifth placed Workington Legion still trail eleven points behind. Recordable contributions came from Senhouse players Tom Lawson and Manny Stalker with breaks of 29 and 20 respectively.

Finally, Trebles Handicap and 7 a side Plate Handicap champions, Aspatria’s Sun Inn, drew 3-3 with Workington Legion. A hard fought game for both division two sides see their league positions unchanged at sixth and fifth.

Week 24 matches – Apr 1st 2015

Golfers take early lead

Seaton Legion delivered a fantastic season double over Workington Golf Club in the Window Outlet Cockermouth and District Snooker League this week with a 4-2 home win to keep their division one top 4 playoff hopes alive.

At two places below their opponents in the table a second victory for the legionnaires puts them in good spirits to tackle the last six games of the season. The fixture was most definitely not without drama as Legion’s Karl Newton produced one of the most impressive wins the league has seen in over ten years. A contribution of 53 by five time county champion, Rob Sim would have been enough to finish most players off but from 57-0 behind and a 36 break later it was Newton who gave his team the confidence to push for the win.

Workington’s division one league leaders, Station Road B produced a flurry of breaks to defeat division two’s Sun Inn 5-1 at home. Simon Frazer (38), Peter O’Hagan (38 & 36) and Shaun Ayre (33) all added to their break aggregate totals as they each recorded frame wins.

Station Road A may be in danger of relegation but with Grant Porter defeating John Street captain, Kevin Basnett in the last frame of the night for a 3-3 draw they demonstrated a fighting quality that will stand them in good stead for the remainder of the season. Station A sit sixth in division one, just place off the bottom. John Street remain fourth in division one.

Division one’s Workington Cons won 5-1 at home to division two’s Senhouse Street Club. Cons remain the only undefeated team in the league but in the point a frame format they still sit four points behind Station Road B in second. Top breaks in the match came from Cons’ top performers Richard McCarthy (32 & 50) and Alan Moore (25). McCarthy still leads the division one break aggregate and the leading player stats.

Maryport Social may have had two points sliced off their division two lead with the United Club winning 6-0 at home to Workington Legion, however a 4-2 win for them at Maryport Labour this still gives the Social side a massive 17 point second tier lead. A Ryan Ismay frame winning break of 35 keeps him well ahead in the break aggregate and leading player averages. In the United Club versus Workington Legion fixture top breaks came from United’s Mark Suitor (27) and Andrew Mitchelhill (22 & 29). Workington Legion and Maryport Labour are fifth and seventh placed respectively in division two.

Trebles Handicap final & Week 23 matches – March 25th 2015

Sun Inn claim second trophy of the season

Sun Inn struck another blow for the underdogs in the Window Outlet Cockermouth and District Snooker League this week as they secured their 2nd title of the season with a 5-2 win against Station Road B in the 6 Red Trebles Handicap KO.

The first frame appeared to be heading Station Road's way as Shaun Ayre quickly reduced the handicap deficit against opponent Gary Miller (receiving 15 start). As a tight frame went into the colours Ayre edged a slight lead and looked favourite until an in-off on frame ball pink handed the initiative over. Miller seized the opportunity by taking a frame winning pink to give Sun Inn a 1-0 match lead.

In the second Sun Inn Andrew Scott (+9) struck the first blow with a break of 24. Undeterred Alan McLeod set about reducing the deficit and built what looked to be a frame winning clearance. A difficult long pink ended his break on 26, and a relieved Scott soon potted the final pink to give the Sun Inn a 2-0 advantage.

In the third Sun Inn’s Ben Scott (+14) displayed some fine long potting as he gradually built upon his handicap start against Tony Elliott. A mix of long potting and tactical safety play saw Scott secure a 3-0 scoreline.

In the fourth, Alan McLeod showed Station Road’s fighting spirit, as he reduced the handicap deficit against Gary Miller (+14) and eventually took the lead. A late flurry from Miller with only the colours remaining gave the Sun Inn man a slight opportunity, but McLeod calmly potted the final pink to secure his sides first frame of the night.

Sensing a potential momentum shift Tony Elliott immediately took charge of the fifth frame against Andrew Scott (+14) by taking the first 5 reds with blacks. With a potential maximum clearance of 75 looking possible, the white came to rest on the final red leaving Elliott no option to play safe, and ending the break on 40.  A further 20 break from Elliot soon secured a 2nd frame for Station Rd.

In the sixth some uncharacteristic misses whilst in the balls from Shaun Ayre saw Ben Scott (+10) grow in confidence. With the frame in the balance going into the colours, superb pots on brown, blue and pink saw the Sun Inn man secure the frame and put his side within one of victory.

Gary Miller (+19) showed no signs of nerves as he faced Tony Elliott in frame seven. Some good safety play from Miller denied Elliott any easy scoring chances. This in turn created a couple of opportunities for Sun Inn cueist which he took with a couple teen breaks. Further fine safety from both players this time followed, but Miller maintained his lead to ultimately take a comfortable title winning frame to the delight of the Sun Inn supporters.

In the league division one leaders Station Road B delivered a 4-2 victory against club mates Station Road A. Top scorer on the night was Peter O’Hagan with a break of 27 in his win over Grant Porter. Station Road A sit sixth in division one.

Division two’s Sun Inn flying high from their trebles win the previous night almost pulled off one of the league’s biggest shocks in over ten years in their fixture against division one’s second placed Workington Cons. Leading 3-1 the Sun Inn were on the cusp of a famous victory but in winning the last two the Cons side showed their class to record a 3-3 draw. Sun Inn remain sixth in division two.

Workington Golf Club kept their third spot in division one with a 4-2 win over fellow divisional opponents and fourth placed John Street Club. Two black ball victories for the golfers proved to be the difference with the only recordable contribution coming from John Street captain Kevin Basnett with 32.

With division two’s second placed United Club being slowly caught over the last few weeks a much needed win was grabbed as they prevailed over Keswick’s Derwent Club 4-2. The top breaks all came from United Club players with Richard Nelson (26), Clive Lister (28) and Andrew Mitchelhill (23) all adding to their break aggregate totals. The Derwent Club drop down one place into a division two fourth spot.

Seaton Legion kept themselves in with a slim chance of nicking a division one top four playoff spot with a 4-2 against 7-a-side champions, Flimby Social. Another league defeat for bottom side Flimby sees their chance of keeping division one status evaporating quickly with just four games to go.

Finally division two’s Senhouse Street Club swapped places with the Derwent Club on the back of a 5-1 home win against Maryport Labour to move them into third. Labour are 10 points adrift at the bottom of division two.

Division one leaders Station Road B showed their strength in depth yet again this week in the Window Outlet Cockermouth and District Snooker League with a 4-2 home victory over Workington Golf Club.

Shaun Ayre took the first for Station B but a Mark Brasted break of 47 levelled the match in frame two. Alan McLeod nicked the third for Station B and a Peter O’Hagan contribution of 27 looked like being enough to see the leaders go 3-1 up. However, Rob Sim had other ideas and with a break of 44 he drew level for the golfers. A finely balanced match swung back in favour of Station B with a well constructed break of 29 from Stephen O’Hagan and with team mate Tony Elliot taking the last a solid performance was rounded off. The golfers displayed their own scoring qualities with Rob Sim (38 break) and Bryan Walker (25 break – even though he was defeated by Alan Moore) giving their team plenty to shout about.

In the match between division one league leaders Station Road B and Flimby Social the 7 a side champions crashed to their second 6-0 defeat in as many weeks. Flimby sink to the bottom of the division one table.

Division two runaway leaders Maryport Social romped to a 6-0 home victory over Workington Legion to extend their gap at the top to a massive 23 points. With seven games left it would take a collapse of mammoth proportions for the Maryport side not to lift the trophy. Top scorers on the night all came from the Social side with Craig Stuart (37 break), Paul Lister (21 break) and Andrew Henderson (break 66) having too much for the legionnaires to contend with. 7 a Side TKO Handicap final & Week 20 matches – March 3rd/4th 2015

Flimby claim maiden win

Flimby Social are the new Window Outlet Cockermouth and District Snooker League 7-a-Side Handicap Champions. Winning their first title in style they defeated former holders Seaton Legion in what turned out to be a comfortable 4-1 victory.

The first frame saw Flimby Social’s Paul Vickers (+28 handicap) start like the proverbial runaway train as he took a 50 point lead against Legion’s Karl Newton (+28 handicap). Trying his best to get back into the game Newton gave it his all but with Vickers missing little he won the frame 80-5.

In frame two Seaton’s Paul Mostyn (+22) made an early break of 22 giving him a lead he managed to maintain into the colours as he took on Flimby’s Mike Walker (+21). Nevertheless with yellow to blue in two visits Walker was still in with a chance. Leaving the pink in what seemed to be a safe position Mostyn was now up against it but showing no nerves he coolly clipped the pink into the corner with the rest for a 55-39 win.

At 1-1 a scrappy frame between Flimby’s Sal Cakmak (+22) and Seaton’s Scott Messenger (+33) came to life as just three balls remained. Needing a snooker Cakmak’s successful attempt yielded the points he required and in potting the blue and pink to leave a simple black the frame looked over. As easy as the pot seemed Cakmak’s effort went awry only to see Messenger leave it over the pocket the very next shot. Duly obliging this time Cakmak sealed the win 50-47 to the visible disappointment of the Seaton outfit.

In frame four, Flimby’s Shane Evitts (+30) fed off Cakmak’s victory in the last as constructed a useful 30 point lead against Seaton veteran Mike Dawson (+17). Clawing his way back into the frame Dawson gave himself a slim chance with just the blue left. With some good safety Evitts didn’t give Dawson the chance he was looking for and just a couple of shots later the Flimby cueist slotted home the ball he required for a 73-45 victory.

In what turned out to be the final frame Flimby’s Wayne Dustin (+27) faced Seaton’s Alan Cannan (+33). Both players missed some good opportunities but with Dustin making slighty fewer errors the Flimby man forged ahead. Needing snookers with 25 left on the table Cannan tried his best hold on but as Dustin sunk the pink the frame and indeed the match was over, 66-42 to the delight of the Flimby crowd.

In the league division one leaders Station Road B defeated 7 a side runners up Seaton Legion 4-2 with breaks of 30 from Shaun Ayre and 52 & 29 from Peter O’Hagan. The best performance from Seaton came from Karl Newton as with a 29 break he beat Simon Frazer. Seaton stay fifth in division one.

The all Workington clash produced some notable performances and non more than that from Station B talisman Peter O’Hagan. Breaks of 32 and 34 against Senhouse’s Tom Lawson gave the Station B side some real momentum and by the time team mate Shaun Ayre added a winning contribution of 36 against Sandy Smith the division one leaders were 4-0 up. Senhouse move up into division two fourth spot.

Workington Cons maintained their undefeated status with a 6-0 victory over division two leaders Maryport Social. A 39 break by division two leading player Ryan Ismay looked like being enough to take the first but a superb contribution of 52 by Mike Park left Ismay licking his wounds as Cons took the lead. At 3-0 to Cons breaks of 20 and 24 by Social’s Paul Lister should have been enough to put a first frame on the board but back came Cons again, this time with a winning contribution of 47 from Alan Moore. Andrew Sharp added more Cons pain with a 27 in next and as Stuart Shepherd took the last against Andrew Henderson the whitewash was complete. Cons maintain second place in division one.

Division one’s fourth placed side John Street Club won 5-1 at Aspatria’s Sun Inn however Kevin Basnett’s tag a the only undefeated player in the league proved to be short-lived as his fall from grace against Sun Inn’s Andrew Scott moved him down to third in division one’s leading player averages. 7 a Side Plate Handicap final & Week 17 matches – February 11th 2015

Sun Inn win plate final

Aspatria’s Sun Inn have won the Window Outlet Cockermouth and District Snooker League 7 a Side Handicap Plate final with a 4-3 win over Workington’s Station Road Club B.

The first final of the season proved to be an exciting affair as from 3-0 down the division one outfit from Workington almost completed an amazing comeback. Holding their nerve the division side clung on to take their very first trophy in just three short season’s in the league.

The first frame saw Station B’s Tony Elliott (+7 handicap) claw back a 28 point handicap deficit only see Sun Inn’s Ben Scott (+35 handicap) clear green to pink to take the game.

An excellent snooker on the yellow by Station B’s Mark Tunstall (+12) put him in with a chance of taking frame two nevertheless just a few shots later an incredible pot on the brown followed by an equally good shot on the blue took the frame for Aspatria’s Gary Miller (+45).

Simon Frazer’s (+12) attacking style didn’t prove to be the most effective way of combating the 22 point start his was giving away and with relative ease it was Sun Inn’s Steven Miller (+35) who took the frame on the brown for a 3-0 lead.

At the point of no return Station B’s (+16) Shaun Ayre was up against Raymond Miller (+37). A scrappy frame went all the way down to a nail biting black and after a small safety exchange it was Miller who potted it to take what he thought was a 4-0 match victory only to see the white roll in off for a relived Ayre and his Station B side.

Giving away 35 start in the next Station B’s Peter O’Hagan (Scr) restricted Sun Inn’s Andrew Scott (+35) to just 5 points as he powered to victory with breaks of 23 & 29.

With the score reduced to a 3-2 deficit Station B’s Alan McLeod (+17) and Sun Inn’s Matt Dance (+35) embarked on what turned out to be another tight encounter. Needing a snooker with just three balls remaining Dance’s successfully attempt gained him a match winning opportunity however as the chance went begging it was McLeod who squared the match to take it into a decider.

The final frame started well for Aspatria’s Ben Irving (+35) as he took a sizable lead with five reds left. A late rally for Station B captain Stephen O’Hagan (+13) re-applied the pressure but the difference proved too much and with a pot on the blue Irving took the frame and match for an elated Sun Inn side.

In the league the only two undefeated sides faced each other this week with division one top team Station B losing out to second placed Workington Cons 4-2.

A superb performance by the Cons side saw them make breaks of 35 (Julian Plaza), 28 & 34 (Richard McCarthy) and 80 (Alan Moore). The point a frame format sees them still in second ten points adrift but with a game in hand.

Division one’s third placed Workington Golf Club defeated Workington Legion 4-2 with the only recordable contribution coming from golfer Rob Sim (33 break). Legion stay fourth in division two.

Flimby Social continued their fine run of form with a 5-1 win over Workington’s United Club. Flimby’s Paul Vickers made the highest break of the match with 28. Flimby close the gap on Seaton Legion to just a point in a division one sixth spot and the United Club are still second in division two.

Finally division two wooden spoon placed Maryport Labour shocked division one’s fourth placed John Street Club as they led 2-0. This advantage was short-lived however as the Workington side came roaring back for a 4-2 win.

Division one’s Seaton Legion and division two’s Senhouse Street both had no fixture.

Week 16 matches – Feb 4th 2015

However the golfers came roaring back and even though Derwent’s Mark Forsyth made a contribution of 22 in his frame against Mark Brasted he could not stop a 3-2 Golf Club lead. A last frame win for Derwent’s Geoff Wilkinson over Golf Club captain Kenny Kirkwood stopped the rot to record what ended up being a very satisfying 3-3 draw. The Golf Club stay third in division 1 with Derwent in a division two fifth spot.

Flimby Social delivered a convincing home victory against Workington Legion to stay sixth in division one. Top scorer on the night was Flimby’s Shane Evitts as with a break of 46 he defeated Legion’s Andrew McMullen. Workington Legion move down one place into fourth in division two.

A first frame win for Workington’s United Club could not stop the second division side from holding off division one’s Seaton Legion as they collapsed to a 5-1 defeat. Seaton are fifth in division one with United Club second in division two.

Week 15 matches – January 28th 2015

Ismay leads break fest

Maryport Social continued their charge towards the division 2 title in the Window Outlet Cockermouth and District Snooker League this week with a 4-2 against John Street Club.

A second win against division 1 opposition in as many weeks produced some fantastic performances and non more than that from Social talisman Ryan Ismay with a superb break of 89 the first frame against John Streets Craig Davies. In a week that contained more recordable breaks than at any time in the season a Paul Lister contribution of 27 took care of frame two for Maryport and a Paul Graham 31 break enabled John Street to claim frame three. With the next two frames shared the last was set up nicely. A 45 break by John Street’s Steve Garroway looked certain to be enough for the draw nevertheless a contribution of 23 allowed Andrew Henderson to nick his second frame in as many weeks to force the win. Social are six points clear at the top of division 2 with John Street slipping down one into a division 1 fourth spot.

Division 1 leaders Station Road B delivered their own break fest with 6-0 home victory over Keswick’s Derwent Club. Contributions of 27 & 28 from Mark Tunstall and 35 from Tony Elliott allowed the table toppers to lead 5-0. Workington Golf Club moved up into third in division 1 with a 6-0 win over Station Road A. Station A drop to the bottom of division 1.

Division 1’s second placed Workington Cons produced an authoritative performance as they breezed past division 2’s Workington Legion 6-0. A break of 34 from Richard McCarthy and a contribution of 29 by Julian Plaza helped the Cons take a 4-0 lead. Displaying no mood for charity the division 1 outfit finished the match with breaks of 25 by Ryan Barker and 29 from Stuart Shepherd to complete the whitewash in style.

Maryport Labour had ideas of claiming their first win of the season as they led fellow division 2 opponents United Club 2-1 thanks to breaks of 20 & 22 by Stephen Harrison. This hope however proved to be short-lived as an Andrew Mitchelhill break of 25 and a Tony Hindmoor contribution of 32 enabled the United Club to power to a 4-2 victory. The United Club stay second with Maryport Labour still in the wooden spoon spot.

Even thought division 1’s Seaton Legion led 2-0 and 3-1 thanks to breaks of 35 by Mike Dawson and 30 by Mark Tatton they could not spot a spirited fight back to 3-3 from division 2’s Senhouse Street Club. Week 14 matches – January 21st 2015

Maryport Social deliver shock

Maryport Social produced the rounds most notable result in Window Outlet Cockermouth and District Snooker League this week. In delivering one of only a few division 2 beats division 1 results this season the second tier leaders took out Flimby Social 4-2 away.

A break filled encounter began with a frame winning contribution of 25 from Flimby’s Sal Cakmak and as team mate Wayne Dustin scored a break of 26 in frame two a 2-0 lead looked on the cards. Nevertheless a Ryan Ismay contribution of 29 levelled the match at 1-1 and as the next two frames were shared the two teams were locked at 2-2. A Paul Lister 32 break took Maryport 3-2 up and with Flimby captain Geoff Banton capitulating in the last Andrew Henderson took the victory for Maryport Social. Flimby slip back to the bottom of division 1.

Division 1 leaders Station Road B were given a scare by division 2’s and fellow Workingtonians the United Club as they could only manage a 3-3 draw. Another contest littered with breaks included two from United’s Andrew Mitchelhill with 30 & 22 and one each from Station B’s Peter O’Hagan and Shaun Ayre with 28 & 29 respectively. The United Club stay second in division 2.

John Street Club went some way to erasing their 7 a side plate handicap semi final defeat to Aspatria’s Sun Inn earlier in the week by turning over division 2’s Workington Legion 5-1. A 31 break from Neil Henderson took his team 4-1 up and even though Legions Mark Lavin made a contribution of 20 in the last it could not stop Kevin Basnett, with a break of 28, topping off a convincing John Street victory. John Street remain third in division 1 with Legion still in a division 2 fifth spot.

Seaton Legion fresh off the back of a 7 a side semi final victory over Keswick’s Derwent Club showed no mercy to defeat their cup opponents for the second time in a week, this time 5-1 at home. Division 1’s Seaton lost the first frame of the match and may have been shaken but even with a Paul Wilson break of 21 (he was defeated by Seaton’s Mike Dawson) the Legion outfit could not be deterred as they strengthened their fifth place in the top flight. Derwent keep a top four spot in division 2.

Breaks of 25 & 38 helped Workington Golf Club’s Rob Sim take a 2-0 lead for his side in their fixture against division 2’s Senhouse Street Club. In the next Mark Brasted made a contribution of 25 and even though he was defeated by Senhouse’s David Bracken his team went on to win 5-1 at home. The golfers and Senhouse stay fourth in their respective divisions.

Finally, Aspatria’s Ben Scott stopped a Station Road A rollercoaster with the aid of a 20 break as from 4-0 up the Sun Inn side pegged back the top tier outfit back to 4-2. Station B move up one place to sixth in division 1 with the Sun Inn remaining in sixth in division 2.

Division 1’s Workington Cons and division 2’s Maryport Labour both had free weeks.

Week 13 matches – January 14th 2015

Station B power ahead

Division 1 leaders Station Road B back in action for the first time since the Xmas break showed no signs of rustiness as they powered to 6-0 away victory against division 2’s Workington Legion in the Window Outlet Cockermouth and District Snooker League this week.

Taking no prisoners Workington’s Station B were in imperious form with Peter O’Hagan and Alan McLeod highlighting their performance with contributions of 29 and 40 respectively. Workington Legion stay third in division 2.

In the fixture between division 2’s Derwent Club and division 1’s John Street a shock looked very much on the cards as the Keswick side took a 2-1 lead. Breaks of 21 and 22 from Derwent’s Mark Forsyth could have made the scoreline even more favourable however John Street’s Paul Graham remained unnerved to take the frame. The Workington outfit then came charging back with the aid of a 33 break from captain Kevin Basnett as John Street eventually ran out 4-2 winners. The Derwent Club are fourth in division 2 with John Street Club in a division 1 third spot.

Workington Cons maintained their second place in division 1 with a 4-2 away win against division 2’s United Club. Breaks of 32 and 25 from Cons’ Richard McCarthy took care of the first frame but United’s Tony Hindmoor answered back with a break of 21 in a fine win over Julian Plaza. Alan Moore put Cons 2-1 up which quickly went to 4-1 ahead with the aid of a 27 and 28 break from Mike Park and Ryan Barker respectively. The United Club didn’t give up though as Dave Chapman nicked the last for consolation point. The United Club keep their division 2 second place.

Flimby Social lifted themselves from the bottom of the division 1 table in fine style as they defeated division 2’s Senhouse Street 5-1 away. The second frame of the match proved to be the most exciting as contributions of 20 and 23 took Senhouse’s Sandy Smith 40 points ahead of Martyn Fisher. Clawing his way back Flimby’s Fisher took the game all the way to the final ball and even though he now looked the only likely winner a cruelly fluked black claimed Senhouse’s only victory. Flimby now sit sixth in division 1 with Senhouse Street Club dropping down one place in division 2 to fifth.

Contributions of 30 from Ryan Ismay and 21 & 41 from Craig Stuart enabled division 2 leaders Maryport Social to take a 2-1 lead over higher divisional opponents Seaton Legion. Nevertheless the Seaton side dug their heels in and in winning two out of the last three frames they managed to calve out 3-3 draw. Seaton Legion are unmoved in a division 1 fifth place.

A Robert Sim break of 27 started the ball rolling for division 1’s Workington Golf Club and with further contributions of 27 & 32 from teammate Mark Cowen the Golfers romped to a 6-0 away win over division 2’s Sun Inn.

Division 1’s Station Road A and division 2’s Maryport Labour both had free weeks.

Division 2’s United Club made the most of their home advantage in taking a 3-1 lead against John Street Club but it was the division 1 side who showed their class in recovering to draw 3-3. Station B remain unbeaten

Window Outlet Cockermouth and District Snooker League division 1 leaders Station Road B stretched their unbeaten run to nine games but not before they were held to a 3-3 draw by a resilient John Street Club outfit.

From 2-0 up the Station B side were pegged back to 2-2 but as Captain Stephen O’Hagan re-asserted his teams’ advantage another win looked a real possibility. This however was never on the mind of John Street’s Steve Garroway as in finishing the final frame of the evening in fine style he recorded a very satisfying away draw for his team. John Street stay fourth in division 1.

Next up, division 2’s Maryport Labour hosted division 1’s Flimby Social and with both sides currently bottom of their respective divisions a much needed win was required. An impressive win for Shaun Moore in the first frame of the night over Wayne Dustin got Maryport Labour off to a good start but as Flimby Social came roaring back (helped by a 30 break from Mike Walker) they forged into a 3-1 lead. A frame winning break of 21 from Stephen Armstrong gave Labour some hope of grabbing a draw but it was captain Geoff Banton who claimed the win for the Flimby side as he defeated Kevin Smith to see his team run out 4-2 victors.

Division 1’s Seaton Legion couldn’t match last week’s heights as they went down 5-1 to second placed fellow divisional opponents Workington Cons. The Cons victory nevertheless was down to fine play from the home side more than a dip in form from the Legion outfit as Richard McCarthy (32 break), Alan Moore (27 & 37 breaks) and Mike Park (41 break) all produced outstanding performances in a confident match win. Legion are in fifth.

Workington’s Senhouse Street Club romped to a 5-1 away victory against Keswick’s Derwent Club in the all division 2 fixture. A 21 break by David Bracken helped Senhouse build a 3-0 lead but it was Lindon Bolton who broke Derwent’s duck to pull one back. This recovery was short lived however as in winning the final two frames aided by a Michael Poole 26 break the Senhouse side galvanised the win. Senhouse Street sit in third with Derwent in fifth.

Finally division 2’s United Club held their higher divisional opponents, Station Road A to a 3-3 draw. Leading 3-1 on the back of an Andrew Mitchelhill 26 break the United Club must have thought they were on course for a victory but as Tom Thompson and Mark Robertson nicked the last two frames of the night stalemate was reached. Station A are sixth in division 1 with the United Club in a division 2 second spot.

No result in for Workington Legion versus Sun Inn.

Maryport Social and Workington Golf Club both had free weeks.

Week 9 matches – December 3rd 2014

Basnett Makes Magical Ton

John Street’s Kevin Basnett produced the performance of the season so far in the Window Outlet Cockermouth and District Snooker League with a superb break of 100 to lead his team to an impressive 5-1 away win against fellow division 1 opponents Station Road A.

The milestone which has only been achieved a handful of times in the leagues fifty odd year history gave Basnett’s team the confidence to push for a win that keeps them in fourth spot in the table. The only other notable contribution of the match came from John Street’s Steve Garroway with 27. Station Road A are just one place off the bottom in sixth.

Station Road B increased their division 1 lead with a 6-0 away whitewash of division 2’s Sun Inn. The Aspatria side pushed the league leaders close in a couple of frames however Station Road side stood firm with some resolute play. Station B’s Tony Elliott top scored on the night with a break of 25 in his win over Andrew Scott. The Workington outfit are now sitting on an eight point lead with Sun Inn still in a division 2 fourth spot.

Breaks of 28 and 37 from Workington Cons’ Richard McCarthy gave his team the first frame in their match against Senhouse Street and even though his side went 2-1 down they eventually ran out 4-2 winners against the sixth placed division 2 side. Cons remain second in division 1.

Division 1’s Workington Golf Club slipped into third on the back of a 4-2 home defeat at the hands of Seaton Legion. Definitely their best win of the season so far, Legion from 2-1 behind won the last three frames to strengthen their division 1 fifth place. Golf Club’s Rob Sim top scored in the match with a break of 46.

Workington’s United Club maintained second place division 2 as they recorded a 3-3 draw against Workington Legion who sit just one place below them in the table. In a match of essentially two halves top scoring Andrew Mitchelhill (22 break) helped the United Club gain a 3-1 lead. Nevertheless it was the Legion who came racing back and with victories for Chris Hunter and Mark Lavin a very satisfying draw was achieved.

Finally division 2 league leaders, Maryport Social moved further ahead as they trounced wooden spoon placed Maryport Labour 6-0. Social’s Andrew Henderson made the highest break of the fixture with a contribution of 21 in the last frame of the evening.

Flimby Social and Keswick’s Derwent Club both had free weeks.

Week 8 matches – November 26th 2014

Cons avoid shock

Former Window Outlet Cockermouth and District Snooker League division 1 champions Workington Cons ran out 4-2 winners against Aspatria’s Sun Inn this week but not before they were given a real shock.

Leading 2-0 the division 2 side from Aspatria had Cons on the back foot but in coming back in style with victories from Ryan Barker, Alan Moore (25 break), Mike Park and Richard McCarthy (30 & 34 breaks) the division 1 outfit maintained their third spot in the table. The Sun Inn moved into a second tier share for third place.

Division 1 leaders Station Road B increased their lead in the table to four points with a 5-1 derby victory against Station Road A. Contributions of 34 & 41 from Station B’s Tony Elliott and Simon Frazer was good enough to take care of the first two frames. The A teams’ Tom Thompson was certainly up for the job in frame three as he defeated the B teams’ star performer from last week in Mark Tunstall. Alan McLeod made it 3-1 and with a 27 break by Peter O’Hagan he took the A team to 4-1 advantage. The final frame was a slightly closer affair but it was Station A again who claimed it with a win from Shaun Ayre. Station A stay sixth in division 1.

Workington Golf Club were impressive in taking a 3-0 away lead against fellow division 1 opponents, John Street Club. Nevertheless this lead was pegged back to 3-2 and a draw looked a real possibility but for the Golf Club’s Ian Fulton who defeated Paul Graham to take his team to a 4-2 victory.

A third straight defeat for division 1’s Seaton Legion was all the most frustrating as their loss proved to be a first win of the season for Flimby Social. A 25 break by Mike Dawson in the second frame of the match ended up being the highest of the contest as Social won the match 4-2. Legion stay in fifth with Flimby still at the foot of the division 1 table.

Derwent Club’s Mark Forsyth made a break of 37 to win the first frame of his teams’ fixture against Workington’s United Club. The all division 2 clash slowly turned around however as the Workington side eventually ran out 4-2 winners. The United Club stay in second with Derwent in joint third.

Finally, Workington’s Senhouse Street Club also recorded their first win of the season as they defeated Maryport Labour 5-1 albeit away from home. The two division 2 teams sit in sixth and seventh respectively.

Week 7 matches – November 19th 2014

Station Road ‘B’ beat closest rivals

Division 1 top team Station Road B delivered a 4-2 away win over second placed Workington Golf Club in a high quality Window Outlet Cockermouth and District Snooker League fixture this week.

The two division 1 teams shared the first two frames but the match came alive as a 31 break by Station B’s Mark Tunstall allowed him to defeat current county champion, Rob Sim. A 28 break in frame four by Tony Elliott wasn’t enough as the Golf Club’s Phil Sorfleet returned with 32 to take the score to 2-2. Frame five was the best of the night as a 33 break by Mark Cowen was cancelled out in style by Station B’s Peter O’Hagan with a winning contribution of 48. The final frame didn’t see any of the previous break building action however the result was just as important for Station Road B with a win for Alan McLeod.

Workington Cons’ Richard McCarthy was in superb form in his teams’ 3-3 draw with Station Road A. The Cons cueist produced breaks of 34 and 43 in his first frame defeat of Peter Collins. Cons’ Andrew Sharp made the only other recordable contribution with a break of 27 even though it was the only points he scored in a defeat to Station A’s Tom Thompson. Cons sit in fourth in division 1 while Station A, also in division 1, remain in sixth.

Division 1’s John Street Club kept their fourth place with a 4-2 win at Flimby Social. A crucial fourth frame win on the black for John Street’s Stuart Ryan allowed his team to pull back to 2-2 and with Steve Garroway and Kevin Basnett (50 break) taking care of the last two frames a satisfying victory was delivered. Flimby remain rooted to the bottom of the division 1 table.

A first versus second class between two division 2 teams, Maryport Social and the United Club ended in a hotly tipped 3-3 draw. Breaks of 21 by Andrew Mitchelhill and 20 by Richard Nelson helped the United Club take a 2-1 lead. A contribution of 26 from United’s Tony Hindmoor looked good for a 3-1 advantage but with Socials Paul Lister making 21 he pulled the match score back to level. A win for Dave Chapman took the United Club back in front however a victory for Socials Andrew Henderson in the last ensured both teams went home relatively happy.

Aspatria’s Sun Inn kept their fourth spot in division 2, albeit on points difference, as they drew with division 2’s sixth placed side Maryport Labour 3-3. A closely contested fixture never had more than one frame in it with the star of the show being Labours Stephen Harrison with a contribution of 22.

The final fixture of the week saw another two division 2 teams fight it out as Keswick’s Derwent Club and Workington Legion did battle. At 2-0 and 3-2 up the Derwent Club probably thought they deserved the win. Legion’s Hayden Mostyn nevertheless had other ideas and with a frame winning break of 21 in the last he nicked the draw for his side. The Derwent Club are in fifth with Workington Legion in third.

Seaton Legion and Workington’s Senhouse Street Club both had free weeks.

7’s Handicap TKO QF’s – November 12th 2014

Former champions look good

2012-13 Window Outlet Cockermouth and District Snooker League 7-a-side Handicap Team Knockout champions, Seaton Legion moved a step closer to regaining the trophy with a 4-3 quarter final victory at Workington’s John Street Club.

A 2-0 lead for the Legion looked like going to three as Mark Tatton led John Street captain Kevin Basnett by nearly 50 points. Nevertheless a break of 55 pulled one back and with teammate Stuart Ryan taking the next parity was gained. Seaton’s Mike Dawson used all his experience to make it 3-2 with a win over Paul Graham but with Neil Henderson taking full advantage of his opportunities against Karl Newton the John Street player took it to a decider. In the last John Street’s Michael Ryan started steadily however he was no match for Paul Smith who with a convincing win took his team into the semi finals.

Current champions Workington Cons were dumped out of the competition at the hands of Workington Golf Club, 4-1. An away tie might have looked like a difficult prospect but with some fine play, highlighted by Rob Sim’s 44 break in his victory over Alan Moore, the golfers moved into the last four.

A fully focussed Flimby Social side laid down their team KO aspirations with a 4-2 victory at Senhouse Street. From 2-2 it was Paul Vickers who gave his side the push it required as a 30 break in his win over Senhouse’s Michael Poole gave teammate Wayne Dustin the confidence to finish off the match for a moral boosting victory.

Keswick’s Derwent Club had the rounds most convincing victory as they defeated Station Road A 4-0 at home. Wins for Willie Wilson, Mark Forsyth, Mik Brown and Carl Arthur were enough to take the Keswick side into the semi’s.

In the 7 a side TKO handicap plate Station Road B beat Maryport Labour 4-2 and Aspatria’s Sun Inn defeated Workington Legion 4-0.

Week 6 matches – November 5th 2014

Station Road ‘B’ climb to the top

Station Road B climbed to the top of the Window Outlet Cockermouth and District Snooker League division 1 this week with a 6-0 whitewash of Flimby Social.

A hefty scoreline didn’t paint the full picture as with black ball wins for both Simon Frazer and Mark Tunstall (27 break) in the first two frames Station Road B took a less than convincing lead. An easy win for Tony Elliott took it to 3-0 and as Peter O’Hagan made a weeks’ highest break of 50 in the next it was soon 4-0. Another black ball victory this time for Shaun Ayre took it to 5-0 and even though Flimby’s Sal Cakmak was in with a great chance with just the last few colours remaining against Alan McLeod he too capitulated as the Station B cueist delivered the whitewash. Flimby sit at the bottom of the division 1 table.

Last weeks division 1 league leaders Workington Golf Club crashed to their first defeat of the season as they went down 4-2 to former champions Workington Cons. On home soil the Cons side proved what a tough team they are to break down as from 2-2 they powered home with two sweeping victories. Top scorers on the night were Workington Golf Club’s Rob Sim with a 25 break and Cons’ Alan Moore with a contribution of 33. The golfers drop to second with Cons sitting ominously in third with a game in hand.

Division 1’s John Street Club moved into fourth after a 6-0 home victory over Seaton Legion, who are one place lower in fifth. A couple of close frame wins for John Street gave them a very pleasing scoreline and with a least one game in hand over every side in the division they are positioned nicely in the table.

Division 2 leaders Maryport Social delivered their second draw in as many weeks with a 3-3 against fellow division 2 side Workington Legion. Away from home Socials’ frame wins were definitely the more convincing. Ryan Ismay (23 break), John Fleming (20 break) and Andrew Henderson (23 break) all made recordable contributions even though Henderson suffered at the hands of Legion’s Mark Lavin. Legion are now in third.

The United Club finally got a first win under their belt with a 4-2 home win over Workington’s Senhouse Street Club. However a previously surprising statistic for one of the pre season division 2’s favourites moves them nicely into second place with Senhouse now down in a division 2 sixth spot.

Division 1’s Station Road A produced a steady performance to defeat Maryport Labour 4-2 away. Station A stay in sixth in division 1 while Maryport still prop up division 2.

Aspatria’s Sun Inn and Keswick’s Derwent Club both had byes.

Week 5 matches – October 29th 2014

Golfers maintain pace

With the home advantage the Golfers didn’t hold back with wins from Bryan Walker, Rob Sim (25 break), Phil Sorfleet, Mark Cowen, Kenny Kirkwood and Ian Fulton to put them 3 points clear at the top of the division 1 table. Labour prop up division 2 with just 5 points.

Station Road B kept their second place in the top division courtesy of a 5-1 away victory over Seaton Legion. Simon Frazer and Peter O’Hagan top scored for Station Road with breaks of 37 and 30 respectively. Alan Cannan was the only Legion player to offer any resistance as in the final frame of the match he defeated Stephen Buchanan to avoid the whitewash. Legion stay fourth in division 1.

With a 5-1 away win division 1’s Workington Cons sent their fellow divisional opponents Flimby Social to the bottom of the table. Top breaks came from Cons’ Richard McCarthy (28) and Alan Moore (37). Cons stay in third.

Maryport Social are still top the division 2 table even though they only managed a 3-3 draw against Keswick’s Derwent Club. The most impressive performance of the match and indeed the week came from Social’s Paul Lister as with contributions of 28 and 33 he demolished Keswick’s Tom Mattinson with ease.

Aspatria’s Sun Inn maintained their impressive start to the season with a 3-3 draw against Workington’s United Club. In the all division 2 fixture the Aspatria side pinched the last two frames of the evening with victories from Ben Irving and Andrew Scott to record a satisfying home draw. Sun Inn are in second with the United Club in fifth.

In another all division 2 game Workington’s Senhouse Street Club drew 3-3 with Workington Legion. The two teams are now sitting in sixth and fourth respectively.

John Street and Station Road A both had byes.

Week 4 matches – October 22nd 2014

Golf Club stay top

Workington Golf Club maintained their top spot in the Window Outlet Cockermouth and District Snooker League division 1 this week with a 4-2 victory over fellow divisional opponents Flimby Social.

On home turf it was Flimby captain, Geoff Banton who got his team off to the ideal start with a fluent victory over Bryan Walker. This win however was countered in quick fashion as with breaks of 28, 47 and 26 from Mark Brasted, Rob Sim and Phil Sorfleet respectively the golfers moved into a 3-1 lead. Giving his team some hope Flimby’s Shane Evitts took care of frame five with a superb win over Mark Cowen but it was Ian Fulton who sewed up the match victory as he defeated Social’s Sal Cakmak.

Due to circumstances outside the control of the league division 1’s John Street Club A have relocated to Station Road Club and are now known as Station Road B.  This change in venue however seemed to bring the best out in the Station B side as with their best performance of the season so far they defeated division 2’s Senhouse Street Club 6-0. Contributions of 34 and 33 from Peter O’Hagan and Mark Tunstall took care of frames two and three but it was teammate Alan McLeod who not only made the highest break of the week but the highest break of the season so far with a magnificent contribution of 72 to take the Station B lads 5-0 up. The final frame of the night was a much scrappier affair but with determination it was Station B captain Stephen O’Hagan who took the sixth and last frame to galvanise the match win.

Workington Cons inflicted a first defeat of the season on lower divisional opponents Maryport Social with a 5-1 home win. The highlight of the match came in frame two as Cons’ Richard McCarthy made a break of 35 in his win over Craig Stuart.

Replicating the fine form he showed in last week’s 7 a side TKO Station Road A captain Mark Robertson produced a match best break of 31 but his inspiration could not stop his team from sinking to a 5-1 defeat at the hands of Seaton Legion.

Division 1’s John Street B took full advantage of their home fixture with a 6-0 win over Aspatria’s division 2 outfit, Sun Inn. The most notable contribution of the evening came from Sun Inn’s Ben Irving with a break of 22 even though he fell foul to a Neil Henderson defeat.

Winning the last two frames of their home fixture Maryport Labour pulled a 3-3 draw out of the bag in the all division 2 clash against Keswick’s Derwent Club.

Workington Legion and United Club both had byes.

Team KO Round 1 – October 15th 2014

Former champions taken all the way

Current champions Workington Cons were taken all the way to a decider in the Window Outlet Cockermouth and District Snooker League 7-a-side team knockout this week as they advanced to the last 8 with a 4-3 victory over fellow townies the United Club.

United captain Dave Chapman took the first frame with a superb green to pink clearance over Andrew Sharp and with teammate Tony Hindmoor making the most of his handicap start over Cons’ Mike Park the score was 2-0. In frame three Richard McCarthy made what ended up being a frame winning break of 27 however a missed final pink for United’s Andrew Mitchelhill saw a potential 3-0 scoreline go begging. Clive Lister required the very last black to dispose of Cons’ Ryan Barker to take his team 3-1 up but Alan Moore pulled one back as he defeated United’s Richard Nelson in a very close encounter. A scrappy penultimate sixth frame saw many missed opportunities but in sticking to his task Cons’ Julian Plaza took the tie into a decider as he beat Mark Suitor. An early deciding frame lead for United’s Paul Johnston put him and his team in a very strong position but with a contribution of 28 Stuart Shepherd drew the frame score level. In to the colours it looked like anyone’s match nevertheless it was Shepherd who kept his cool and in picking off the remaining balls one by one he claimed the victory for a very relieved Cons outfit.

The surprise of the round came from a travelling Station Road Club as they defeated multiple former champions John Street A, 4-3. A quality break of 50 by Station Road’s Mark Robertson took care of the first and with fellow Station Road player Grant Porter taking care of the next with a victory over Tony Elliott the score was 2-0. John Street’s Shaun Ayre claimed frame three with a contribution of 44 but with a victory for Station Road A’s ‘Iron Man’ Keith Telford in the next he put his team 3-1 ahead. Mark Tunstall won what ended up being an easy fifth frame and with a black ball victory in the next Peter O’Hagan he set up a decider. Off the higher handicap Mike Walker might have been seen as the underdog however with a convincing display he defeated John Street captain, Stephen O’Hagan with room to spare to take his team into the quarter -finals.

Flimby Social Club put out a strong side in their away tie against Maryport Social Club and with some determined play they presided 4-1. A comfortable victory for Flimby captain Geoff Banton in the first was cancelled out in frame two as a black ball victory saw Ryan Ismay level the match. Flimby’s Mike Walker took the next and with teammate Sal Cakmak nicking frame four he put his side 3-1 up. Giving away a sizable start in the fifth frame Flimby’s Paul Vickers showed no signs of panic. Seizing his chances with aplomb the Flimby cueist moved confidently through the gears to defeat Maryport’s Scott Lister and put his team into the next round.

Workington Golf Club keen to improve on last years semi final run swept aside Workington Legion 4-0 in the first of the rounds two whitewashes.

The other came from Keswick’s Derwent Club as they avenged a previous weeks’ league defeat by beating Aspatria’s Sun Inn, 4-0.

Finally, Seaton Legion looked good in their 4-1 home victory over Maryport Labour as the 2013 champions moved to the next stage.

John Street B and Senhouse Street both received byes.

Week 3 matches – October 8th 2014

Golfers take early lead

Workington Golf Club have taken a round three lead in the Window Outlet Cockermouth and District Snooker League division 1 with a 4-2 home win over division 2’s United Club.

The first frame saw a good victory for United’s Dave Chapman as he took out 2012 singles handicap champion Mark Cowen but with Rob Sim making a contribution of 37 to beat United’s Clive Lister the match score was level. Taking the next Mark Brasted put his side ahead and with teammate Phil Sorfleet also winning the fourth with a break of 26 the golfers took a 3-1 lead. A convincing victory for Ian Fulton ensured the match win nevertheless United’s Andrew Mitchelhill offered some consolation as he claimed the final frame with a victory over golf club captain, Ken Kirkwood.

2011 & 2012 division 1 champions Workington Cons put in confident away performance as they swept aside John Street B, 5-1. A quickly established 3-0 lead was only halted by John Street B captain Kevin Basnett as from well behind he produced a break of 34 to eventually overturn Stuart Shepherd. This minor resurgence was soon forgotten as a brace of 26 breaks from Richard McCarthy and Alan Moore put the match win in no doubt for what looks to be a Cons side very much challenging for the top title again this season.

Maryport Social are already looking likely division 2 challengers this term as they won easily against fellow divisional opponents Senhouse Street Club, 5-1. A frame winning 25 break in the first by Ryan Ismay set the tone for the Maryport side and even though David Bracken levelled the match score with a victory in frame two it was fairly easy going for the Social outfit as they recorded an impressive away victory.

Sitting just behind Maryport Social courtesy of a 4-2 home win against Keswick’s Derwent Club, Aspatria’s Sun Inn are the division 2 surprise package so far this season given the fact that they picked up the wooden spoon last term. The highlight was a Ben Irving 22 break in his win over Derwent’s Joe Bell.

Station Road’s Mark Robertson hit a cool break of 37 (to defeat Hayden Mostyn) in the first frame of his teams’ 4-2 home win over lower divisional opponents Workington Legion.  The four points gained in the victory sees Station Road sitting in fifth place in division 1 while Legion’s two points puts them in a division 2 third spot.

Finally, Seaton Legion powered to a 5-1 home win over Maryport Labour. In the division 1 versus division 2 clash Seaton’s Scott Messenger top scored with a break of 30 and the two team’s now sit second and seventh (bottom) in their respective leagues.

John Street A and Flimby Social both had free weeks.

Week 2 matches – October 1st 2014

Big Guns share spoils

The Window Outlet Cockermouth and District Snooker League entered the second round of the new season this week with the feature tie between current division 1 champions, John Street and former title holders Workington Cons ending in 3-3 draw.

Fresh off the back of a thumping 6-0 victory at Maryport Labour last week the John Street side quickly moved into a 2-1 lead with wins for Shaun Ayre and Tony Elliott. Nevertheless up for the challenge and with the help of breaks of 37 (Alan Moore) and 26 (Julian Plaza) the Cons outfit showed great resolve in delivering a very satisfying draw.

Last season’s division 2 champions might have thought they were in for a relatively easy ride against Workington Legion, however as Sandy Smith took the golf clubs current county champion Rob Sim out with room to spare he made the perfect start for the legionnaires. Winning the second frame by just a point Mark Brasted made it 1-1 and with fellow golfers Phil Sorfleet and Mark Cowen taking the next two they forced a 3-1 lead. Not to be deterred the legion side dug in and with a victory for Leigh McTiffin followed by frame winning break of 30 by teammate Haydon Mostyn a creditable 3-3 draw was obtained.

Maryport Social added to last week’s win against Station Road with a 4-2 victory over Aspatria’s Sun Inn. In the all division 2 clash a first frame break of 21 by Aspatria’s Raymond Miller proved fruitless in a runaway Ryan Ismay win with the Social player also adding a break of 27 in the process. A contribution of 22 from Maryport’s Craig Stuart took care of the next but with Sun Inn’s two Ben’s, Irving and Scott taking care of the next two it was game on. A close fought victory for Paul Lister gave Maryport the lead and as teammate Andrew Henderson added a 22 break in the last to take care of Rhys Dean the match win was complete.

Division 2’s Derwent Club put last week’s whitewash against Workington Golf Club to one side as they defeated division 1’s Station Road 4-2. The Keswick side ground out their victory with some fine tactical play but it was Station Road’s Tom Thompson and Mark Robertson who produced the two most notable performances of the evening in recording breaks of 31 & 25 respectively in the ties most convincing wins.

Workington’s United Club also flew the division 2 flag in fine style as they held division 1’s Flimby Social to a 3-3 draw. Making the most of their home advantage the United Club took an early 2-1 lead but with a frame winning break of 31 from Flimby’s Mike Walker the teams were tied at 2-2. Sal Cakmak soon put Flimby 3-2 ahead but it was United’s Andrew Mitchelhill with a contribution of 24 who nicked the draw in a finely balanced fixture.

John Street B begun their season (no game last week) with a 5-1 away victory against Maryport Labour. In a match that surprisingly saw no recordable contributions it was Labours Dean Petre who produced his team’s best performance as in obtaining the snooker he required on the colours and eventually dispatching them all to win he thwarted a luckless Stuart Ryan.

Senhouse Street Club and Seaton Legion both had free weeks.

Champions start with a charge

The 2014/15 Window Outlet Cockermouth & District Snooker League season kicked off this week with a very different look. Continuing in its existing two tier format but with all teams facing each other current division 1 champions John Street had an interesting fixture as they saw themselves on the road up against last season’s division 2 second bottom side Maryport Labour.

With nothing to gain and everything to lose the John Street outfit were in no way shaken by this. Picking up where they left off last season and with victories for Tony Elliot, Simon Frazer, Alan McLeod, Peter O’Hagan, Shaun Ayre and Stephen O’Hagan the John Street made the perfect start to the new campaign by powering to 6-0 away victory.

In the game between division 1’s Seaton Legion and relegated Workington side the United Club a position of deadlock at 2-2 was broken as Legions Karl Newton defeated Andrew Mitchelhill followed by a last frame win for team mate Alan Cannan to see Seaton take a 4-2 win.

Surprise division 1 top 4 outfit Flimby Social were held to a very credible 3-3 draw by division 2’s Workington Legion proving that the lower divisional sides are enjoying a crack at the big boys already.

Second tier champions Workington Golf Club ran out comfortable 6-0 winners against Keswick’s division 2 new boys the Derwent Club. Breaks of 27 & 36 by the Golf Clubs County Champion, Rob Sim were the highlight with the only other notable contribution coming from team mate Mark Brasted in the form of a 29 break in his victory over Derwent’s Carl Arthur.

Frame winning breaks of 20 & 23 by Aspatria’s Raymond Miller got his side off to a fine start but with some resolute play Workington’s Senhouse Street Club fought back to eke out a 3-3 draw in the only all division 2 clash.

Finally, Maryport Social were quick to forget last season relegation woes as they disposed of their higher divisional opponents in Workington’s Station Road Club, 4-2.

Workington Cons and John Street B both had free weeks.
