Presentation night – 6th June 2014

Davis puts on fantastic show

Six time World Snooker Champion, Steve Davis provided the finishing touches to a fine Window Outlet Cockermouth & District Snooker League 13/14 season with a superbly entertaining display in front of a packed Workington Golf Club crowd.

Over the last few seasons the league has seen the presentation night develop but the ITV ‘I’m a Celebrity...” star certainly delivered some supreme entertainment.

Davis played seven absorbing frames making countless 50 plus breaks as he caressed the cue ball around the table. Walking away undefeated Davis rolled back the years and showed why he was the best player on the planet during the 80’s in making a superb break of 117 against Station Road A’s Mike Walker.

The winner of eighty-one professional snooker titles had the Golf Club masses in stitches as he regaled many humorous tales during his trick shot routine later in the evening.

Throughout the evening the BBC snooker pundit was the consummate professional, while presenting the season’s trophies, posing for photos and signing autographs once the evening had concluded.

The night was not only about snooker though, as the evening also raised much needed funds for two important charities. The first, Hugs for Noah first featured as The Window Outlet performed work for the Wall family as part of a BBC ‘DIY SOS’ project. This vital work has provided help for 2 year old Noah Wall who was born with spina bifida and hydrocephalus and remains a charity close to league sponsors, Graeme and Ann-Marie Pritts’ heart.

The successful raffle for the Steve Davis signed pool table that appeared at Mr & Mrs Pritts’ show room that afternoon with young Noah produced a figure of £250 pounds which was then doubled to £500 by Mr Pritt for the Hugs for Noah charity.

Another raffle also took place where a further £500 was raised for the second charity featured on the night, The Alzheimer’s Society, to the delight of league treasurer David Chapman who is organising a number of events for this fantastic cause throughout the remainder of the year.

League Chairman and MC for the evening Kevin Basnett quoted, “Steve Davis is a true snooker legend and everyone had a thoroughly enjoyable evening”. Basnett added, “However it feels hugely rewarding to be able to use the league to raise money for such fantastic charities. Fund raising activities started in 2007 and our total now stands at £7375 of which the league is immensely proud of”.

Eight months in the planning of the presentation evening didn’t come together however without the help of some important people namely, Ken Kirkwood & Mark Carruthers of Workington Golf Club, league treasurer Dave Chapman and league secretary Andrew Mitchelhill, who all played their part in an efficiently run event.

Finally though, the league stressed that the evening wouldn’t have been possible without the support of the leagues sponsors, Graeme Pritt of The Window Outlet, Workington (01900 873555), Alan Cannan of JA Cannan Ltd (Solid Fuel Flue Specialist – Tel: 01900 601197) and Leigh Musgrave of Leigh Musgrave Roofing (01946 833537). Basnett quoted “I’m delighted that the league continues to move forward while maintaining its support worthwhile charities but I cannot thank Steve, Graeme, Ann Marie, Alan & Leigh enough for the support they have offered in making this night possible”.

Division 1 Top 4 playoff – 21st May 2014

John Street cap a fine season

Workington’s John Street capped a fine end to a their season in The Window Outlet Cockermouth and District Snooker league with 4-2 division 1 playoff win over last year’s champions Workington Cons.

In a campaign that has included a league title, victories in the Singles, Doubles, Trebles and 7-a-side plate competitions the ‘juggernaut’ as they have come to be known this season proved to have a little too much strength in depth on the night for Cons’ to spoil their end of season party.

In frame one John Street’s Tony Elliott was put under some early pressure as Cons’ Ryan Barker settled nicely. A few shot later nevertheless and Elliott was back in front. Going into the colours a crucial mistake by Barker let Elliott in and in potting the balls he required to leave the Cons cueist requiring snookers he eventually won 67-34.

In the second frame a small lead Cons’ Ryan Ismay was soon cancelled out as John Street captain Stephen O’Hagan made a break of 25. The game stayed close and with the last four colours remaining it was anybodies frame. A fine pot on the brown by Ismay followed by the blue leaving perfect position on the pink and with the black hanging over the corner pocket it looked like the end for O’Hagan. However to the amazement of all in attendance Ismay missed and just a few shots later it was the John Street captain who took the game 58-46.

John Street’s Mark Tunstall raced away from Cons’ Richard McCarthy in the next with a break of 22 right from the off. Responding with 20 McCarthy was soon into his stride. Tunstall squandered a couple of decent chances which allowed McCarthy to build on his confidence and potting just about everything he faced there on he recorded 69-44 victory.

At 2-1 to John Street Alan McLeod took on Cons’ former county champion Alan Moore. Missing nothing Moore built a 40 point lead but in refusing to lie down McLeod battled his way back into the frame. Even though McLeod had given himself a chance the initial lead proved to be a bridge too far and Moore closed out the frame, 66-38.

Frame five saw the turn of John Street’s Peter O’Hagan and Cons’ Julian Plaza. Starting confidently O’Hagan put together a series of small breaks to apply considerable pressure. Trying his hardest Plaza attempted to pull this lead back but as his game seemed to desert him O’Hagan powered to a convincing 57-14 win.

The final frame of the match began with John Street’s Shaun Ayre taking a small lead thanks to a couple of breaks in the teens. Cons’ Mike Park kept himself in the game with some dogged play but as Ayre broke free once again, thanks to a contribution of 27, he proved too difficult to contain and the singles champion took the frame and the title with 63-39 victory.

Division 2 Top 4 playoff – 13th May 2014

Station A turn over league Champions

Workington’s Station Road A produced one of their best performances of the season to take The Window Outlet Cockermouth and District Snooker league Division 2 top four playoff title with a superb 4-3 win over league champions Workington Golf Club.

In frame one the divisions top player this season, Mark Cowen was strong favourite to take the Golf Club into an early lead  but with John Teasdale making a late crucial break of 16 to leave Cowen needing snookers it was the Station A cueist who took a 70-19 victory.

The second frame brought the Golf Club’s current County Champion, Rob Sim, to the table however he didn’t have it all his own way. Chipping away it was Station A’s Mike Walker who gave Sim plenty to think about but as the golfer managed to fashion a 20 point lead going into the colours the frame destiny was inevitable and he ran out a 66-21 winner.

Jordan Berwick built a 20 point advantage early in frame three as he kept the Golf Clubs Phil Sorfleet at arms length. Even though Sorfleet tried hard to pull this lead back in the end this proved fruitless as the young Station A player moved easily to 57-19 frame win.

At 2-1 up Station A’s Tom Thompson started well and for a time looked to be taking his team into a ever increasing lead but with the Golf Clubs Bryan Walker pretty much potting every ball he took on he levelled the match with a 59-24 victory.

Frame five began with a break of 16 from the Golf Club’s Ian Fulton and with continued fine play he maintained a healthy lead throughout. Station A’s Mark Robertson did have a couple of half chances towards the end of the frame but in keeping this points gap in tact it was the Golfer who won comfortably, 68-26.

The Golf Club now 3-2 in front looked good for the title with Mark Brasted asserting himself as he faced Station A ‘Iron Man’ Keith Telford. Nevertheless a telling snooker with just a few reds left yielded enough points for Telford to squeeze his nose in front. This seemed to be the boost that the Station A player required and with some fine potting on the colours he took his team to a decider with a 65-47 triumph.

The final frame started cautiously with the Golf Club’s Bryan Walker and Station A’s John Teasdale back at the table. First to break the deadlock was Teasdale and with a well constructed break of 20 he took an important lead. Struggling to recapture the form he displayed earlier in the match Walker missed a couple of key opportunities and in mopping up the leftovers Teasdale powered to a win 57-16 to take back a title his team won last year.

Round 28 matches (Final week) – 30th March 2014

John Street and Golf Club are champions

The Window Outlet Cockermouth and District Snooker league fixtures were completed this week with John Street and Workington Golf Club claiming the division 1 & 2 titles.

Even though John Street had put themselves in an unassailable title claiming position a couple of weeks ago a final fixture against close rivals Workington Cons proved to be as competitive as ever with the champions running out 4-2 winners.

A break of 38 in the first was enough for John Street captain Stephen O’Hagan to take the frame against Richard McCarthy but with Cons’ Ryan Ismay winning the next against Singles champion Shaun Ayre the score was 1-1.

Frames three and four were shared as John Street’s Alan McLeod defeated two time County champion Alan Moore and Cons’ Julian Plaza prevailed over Mark Tunstall.

A 47 break by Peter O’Hagan in his win over Ryan Barker allowed John Street to go 3-2 up and team mate Gavin Simpson sealed the victory for John Street as he defeated Mike Park to take a title they last won in 2009.

It wasn’t all doom and gloom for Cons though as the two points they won was enough for them to nick second place and ensure they received a home draw in next week’s semi-final playoffs against third placed Station Road C (no fixture).

Also in division 1 Flimby Social secured the 4th place playoff berth after a magnificent turn around in their season culminated in a see-saw 3-3 draw at home to Maryport Social, a result which saw their opponents relegated from the top division. Highlight of the night was a cool 29 break from Andrew Henderson in the final frame to defeat the in-form Sal Cakmak.

Seaton Legion managed a 3-3 draw with the United Club and even though they finished the season on the same points as their opponents they stay up by virtue of a greater number of wins. Seaton’s Alan Cannan proved to the hero as in the last he defeated Ian Whineray in what proved to be the frame that ensured their survival.

Division 2 run away champions Workington Golf Club ended their season on a high with a 6-0 trouncing of Senhouse Street Club. A winning 26 break in the second frame by the Golf Club’s recently crowned County Champion Rob Sim saw him take the division’s aggregate break prize to go along with his highest break achievement from just a few weeks ago. These weren’t the only successes for the golfers as a victory from Mark Cowen allowed him to take the division’s leading player honour.

Workington’s Station Road A needed just a point against club rivals and third placed Station Road B to secure their promotion to the top tier. A thumping win for the A team’s Tom Thompson against Karl Newton assured this and as a hotly contested second frame also went to the A team with Mike Walker (32 break) defeating Neil Wilkinson (27 break) they powered to a convincing 6-0 match victory to finish second in the table.

In the final fixture of the week Workington Legion drew 3-3 with Maryport Labour with the highest contribution of the night going to legionnaire Chris Hunter with 25. Legion finish the season in fifth with Maryport Labour in sixth.

Week 27 matches – April 23rd 2014

 Station B shock Champions

Workington’s Station Road B produced their performance of the season in the Window Outlet Cockermouth and District Snooker League this week with a superb 4-2 victory over Workington Golf Club.

Even though the previously undefeated Golfers were confirmed a division 2 champions last week a home draw with their strongest side on show was still a massive task for third placed Station B.

Multiple county champion Rob Sim probably looked certain for the first against Station B captain Luke Naylor but with fantastic execution it was Naylor who prevailed.

A 39 break by Richard Nelson was enough for Station B to take the next as well but with Mark Brasted winning frame three the golfers were back in it.

Phil Sorfleet tied the match up with a win over Station B’s Karl Newton but as Neil Wilkinson defeated the golf clubs division two number one ranked Mark Cowen, Station B were on the cusp of a famous win.

In the last the golfers were probably expected to draw proceeding up, however Leigh Musgrave had other ideas and with a fantastic break of 28 he delivered the match win with a victory over the golf clubs Ian Fulton.

Also in division 2 Station Road A maintained their second place in the league with a 5-1 victory over Aspatria’s wooden spoon placed Sun Inn.

The final fixture in the second tier ended in a 3-3 draw between Senhouse Street Club and Workington Legion to confirm Senhouse’s fourth (playoff) place and Legion’s fifth with just one week remaining.

In division 1 third placed Workington Cons improved their chance of taking second place with a 5-1 away win against Maryport Social. This result sees the Social side sink to the bottom of the table. Highest break of the match came from Cons’ Richard McCarthy with a contribution of 37.

Station Road C’s chance of taking second place is now in real jeopardy as they went down 4-2 at home to the United Club. Station C captain Kevin Basnett confirmed himself as the divisions leading player with a win over United Club’s Mark Suitor and with breaks of 39 and 36 he also put himself in an unassailable position for the aggregate break prize. Even thought the United Club are in sixth they still have a slim chance of finishing in the top four playoffs  as they face Seaton Legion next week.

Flimby Social pushed themselves into fourth position with a 4-2 home win home over Seaton Legion who now after being best placed for the playoffs for nearly the whole of the season now sit in fifth. Flimby’s Wayne Dustin top scored on the night with a contribution 27.

Singles final & Week 26 matches – April 16th 2014

Shaun produces singles shock

John Street’s Shaun Ayre (Handicap +15) by probably producing shock of the whole competition, albeit in the final, has taken the Leigh Musgrave Roofing sponsored Window Outlet Cockermouth and District Snooker league Handicap singles title with a 4-2 win over six time winner Kevin Basnett (Handicap Scr).

Even more impressive the pre season venue allocation had resulted in the final being held at Basnett’s home venue, Station Road Club, but with an excellent display of potting and safety Ayre delivered a season’s best performance to re-claim a title he won in 1992.

In frame one both players looked to be in good form but with Ayre potting just about every ball he went for he ran out a comfortable 83-45 winner.

Frame two saw an early break of 19 by Ayre and added to his 15 points start it gave him a healthy lead. Nevertheless Basnett clawed his way back and with the colours remaining there was just enough points on the table for the Station Road player to win. A great yellow to blue left an easy shot on the pink for Basnett but in leaving it with the rest it was difficult to get close to the black. Consequently a long black was missed but the resultant leave was a tough shot for Ayre with the rest. Putting the nerves aside the John Street cueist stroked the black in for a 64-56 victory and a 2-0 lead.

The next was a crucial frame for Basnett to win but with Ayre in early again, this time with 32, Basnett’s job was even harder. Attempting to pull the deficit back Basnett reached a break of 14 but in going in-off Ayre capitalised and ran out an easy winner at, 86-45.

Frame four was the point of no return for Basnett at 3-0 down but in first with a break of 56 proved to be enough to take the game as Ayre finally conceded 79-39 with the colours left on the table.

The next frame saw both players make a couple of smaller contributions but as Ayre maintained his handicap advantage Basnett needed the final three balls take the frame. With a long blue presenting itself to Ayre one good pot would have been enough to take the match, still as it went awry it left Basnett with a slim chance. Cutting in a very thin blue developing the pink off the cushion and then potting it to take the white of three cushions to leave the white perfectly on the black was probably three of the best shots in the match as Basnett made it 2-3 with a 69-65 win.

The sixth frame couldn’t have started any better for Ayre as three small breaks interspersed with some equally fine safety enabled the John Street player to establish a 50 point lead. Unnerved by this Basnett stepped in and coolly constructed a break of 40 but in achieving a ‘kick’ on the last black he potted, the desired position on the next red was sacrificed. However in ‘welding’ the white to the top cushion with resultant safety the advantage was with the Station Road cueist. Ayre continued with his attacking approach and in potting probably the best ball of the match he made enough points to leave himself 16 up with the colours remaining. After a couple of safety shots each Basnett left a long yellow but again wasting no time Ayre potted it followed by green and brown and eventually blue for a 70-40 frame match and championship win.

In the league division one champions elect, John Street, were held to a 3-3 against Maryport Social. Social move up to fifth.

Station Road C travelled to Flimby and with a weakened side they managed an important 4-2 win, one that may prove important if they are to stay in second place. Flimby remain in sixth but with a game in hand they still have a chance of finishing in the top four.

Workington Cons kept third with a 5-1 home win against a Seaton Legion side who are hanging onto what is now the last top four playoff place available. Highest break of the match came from Cons’ Ryan Ismay with 26.

In the second tier Workington Golf Club won 5-1 at Aspatria’s Sun Inn to confirm them as champions with two fixtures left.

Senhouse Street Club recorded a 5-1 away win against Maryport Labour to guarantee their place in the top four playoffs with Labour almost certain to stay in sixth.

Finally Workington Legion and Station Road B thrashed out a 3-3 draw to keep their respective positions in the table at fifth and third. Station Road B’s Richard Nelson produced the highest contribution of the match with 36.

Week 25 matches – April 9th 2014

Sim makes magical ton

Workington Golf Club’s Rob Sim stole the headlines in the Window Outlet Cockermouth and District Snooker League this week with a fantastic 110 break in his teams’ 5-1 home victory over Station Road A.

A record for division 2 was recorded in the second frame of the match as Station A’s Mike Walker was powerless against Sim’s brilliance.

In division 1 John Street Club now need just one frame out of their remaining two fixtures to take the title after defeating Seaton Legion 6-0 this week.

In a remarkable run against the Seaton side this season the John Street outfit completed an aggregate 23-1 scoreline in their four matches faced but even more surprisingly the Legion side still have a chance of making the top four playoffs.

A home fixture for the Seaton side gave them an advantage but with Tony Elliott easing past Alan Evans in the first and Alan McLeod making a break of 39 against Allan Stephenson in the next the match score quickly moved to 2-0.

John Street’s Mark Tunstall removed Paul Smith without difficulty in frame three and even though Mark Tatton made a contribution of 29 in the next John Street’s Peter O’Hagan made it 4-0.

In frame five John Street’s Handicap singles finalist, Shaun Ayre beat Paul Mostyn in one of the evenings closest frame, however it was Captain Stephen O’Hagan who completed the whitewash as he defeated Seaton’s Alan Cannan with room to spare.

Station Road C had a week of mixed fortunes as a 4-2 win against current champions Workington Cons was quickly forgotten seen as they went down 4-2 to Maryport Social just a day later.

Station C’s Cons victory produced some significant moments as a 52 break by Richard McCarthy looked to yield considerably more but for a missed black from the spot. Also in the match Station C’s Paul Graham knocked in a nicely constructed break of 40 in a frame which he limited Ryan Barker to just 9 points.

Back in division 2, the Golf clubs win now sees them 10 points ahead of their opponents at the top with a game in hand. Other highlights in the match came in the shape of a 36 break from Station A’s Tom Thompson even though he went down to Phil Sorfleet.

Third placed Station Road B made some ground on their club rivals (Station A) as they defeated Maryport Labour 4-2 and with a game in hand they have a real chance of overtaking them.

Finally in division 2 Workington Legion ran out 6-0 winners over the Sun Inn leaving the Legion side in fifth with the Aspatria outfit still in last place.

Week 24 matches – April 2nd 2014

Station A stay focussed

Window Outlet Cockermouth and District Snooker League’s Station Road A may face a stiff challenge to overturn Workington Golf Club at the top of division 2 but with a 5-1 home win against Workington Legion they are showing no signs of giving up.

With the golfers facing no fixture this week Workington’s Station A players made the perfect start as Jordan Berwick and captain Grant Porter made it 2-0 with their wins against Hayden Mostyn and Andrew McMullen. The next frame delivered a rankings surprise as Legions Chris Hunter defeated Mike Walker, however as Keith ‘Iron Man’ Telford won the next against Legions Sandy Smith Station A led 3-1. Delivering the match win Station A’s Tom Thompson beat Daniel McMullen and with Mark Robertson proving victorious in the last over Legion’s Mark Lavin a fine win was capped. Legion stay in fifth.

Third placed Station Road B were held to a 3-3 away draw against fourth placed Senhouse Street. A first frame winning break of 28 by Senhouse’s David Bracken set his team up nicely and as they were to retain the match lead at 3-2 captain George Davidson’s previous weeks’ form looked to stand them in good stead for a win. Nevertheless, Station A’s Leigh Musgrave had over ideas and with a victory on the colours he nicked a draw for his team.

The last fixture in division 2 this week saw the bottom two teams take each other on with last placed Sun Inn defeating Maryport’s Labour Club 5-1. A fantastic away win for the Aspatria side unfortunately doesn’t change the two team’s places in the table as they still sit sixth and seventh.

In division 1 Station Road C beat the league leaders for the second time this season but could only dent their lead as a 4-2 sees the John Street side still 15 points ahead at the top of the table. Wins for Craig Davies, Steve Garroway, Neil Henderson and Paul Graham put the Station C side 4-0 up. A 27 break right from the off not only enabled John Street’s Peter O’Hagan to defeat Kevin Basnett and pull one back for his team but also ensured he replaced the Station C cueist at the top of the leading player averages. The last frame proved to be a scrappy affair but it was Mark Tunstall who pulled another one back for the champions elect as he defeated Stuart Ryan.

Third placed Workington Cons also ran out 4-2 winners against fellow Workingtonians the United Club. A solid home victory for the Cons was highlighted with a 28 break from Ryan Ismay in his win over Mike Dawson. The United Club stay in a share of fifth with Flimby who had a fixture free week.

The final game of the week turned out to be a massive boost for Seaton Legions top four hopes as they defeated bottom side Maryport Social 5-1. However an inspiring home victory didn’t start well as Alan Stephenson was beaten by Social’s Paul Lister. A win for Scott Messenger in the next got Seaton off the mark and in taking the remaining four frames the Legionnaires now look hot favourites to take what is realistically the only playoff spot still up for grabs.

The Leigh Musgrave Roofing sponsored Singles Handicap also saw the semi finals take place this week with Station C’s Kevin Basnett and John Street’s Shaun Ayre both reaching the final.

Basnett travelled to John Street in the first semi and with a top break of 68 he defeated Peter O’Hagan 3-1. In the other semi Ayre’s 3-0 home win suggested an easy victory but the frames were a lot closer than the scoreline delivered as he knocked out Station B’s Richard Nelson.

Doubles final & week 23 matches – March 25th/26th 2014

 O’Hagan brothers make it three.

John Street brothers Peter and Stephen O’Hagan (+7 handicap) have retained the Leigh Musgrave Roofing sponsored Window Outlet Cockermouth and District Snooker League Doubles handicap for an impressive third year running.

The Workington siblings have proved to be the competitions most formidable partnership over recent years, however it was no easy ride as a 4-3 win over Station Road C’s Kevin Basnett and Barry Collins (+12 handicap) tested all aspects of their ability.

In the first a cagey start by both pairings was broken with a break of 33 by Stephen O’Hagan which in the end proved to be enough as the John Street brothers won a low scoring frame, 52-14.

Frame two saw the O’Hagan’s lead right through to the colours and with just the green remaining they led by 23. A difficult long pot faced Basnett but with extreme accuracy the Station Road player slotted it in and cleared the remaining balls for a 61-59 win.

At 1-1, Peter O’Hagan was in first with 24 but with a slice of bad luck he ended up touching a red which brought the break to a close. Chipping away at the lead Basnett & Collins pegged the John Street pair back and even though they managed to level the scores with just the last five colours left it was the O’Hagan’s who went a frame ahead again with a 65-41 victory.

Frame four saw Basnett make an early contribution of 22 and even though both teams had numerous chances it was the Station Road duo who won the frame easily, 68-18.

Again another early break by Basnett, this time 24, seemed to apply sufficient pressure and with some excellent safety from Collins it was another convincing frame win, 73-23 to take the Station Road pair 3-2 up.

In the penultimate frame Basnett and Collins scraped together a small lead but with Peter O’Hagan pulling it back both teams needed blue and pink with just the last three balls remaining. Facing a long blue Stephen O’Hagan looked like he had every chance of potting it but with the pink near the top cushion position appeared difficult. Nevertheless with probably the shot of the match Stephen powered the blue home, gained perfect position on the pink and duly obliged to set up a final frame decider with a 52-42 victory.

The last frame was inevitably edgy with both sides missing chances but as Basnett potted a tricky final green the game looked all but over. However by finishing straighter than he wished a power shot on the brown to gain position on the blue went awry and in leaving it on it was Peter O’Hagan who coolly mopped up the remaining balls for a 64-47 frame, match & title win.

In the league, division 1 bottom side Flimby produced one of the shocks of the season so far as they defeated second placed Workington Cons, 4-2.

Flimby made the best possible start to the match as Nigel Carruthers won courtesy of a re-spotted black over Cons’ Ryan Ismay. The second resulted in an equally impressive win as Flimby’s Mike Walker beat the vastly experienced Julian Plaza to make it 2-0. A Richard McCarthy 27 break enabled the current champions to pull one back as he defeated Flimby’s Wayne Dustin but it was team mate, Paul Vickers who made it 3-1 with a victory over Cons’ Stuart Shepherd.  Keeping them in the match by the narrowest of margins two time County singles champion, Alan Moore needed the last ball to squeeze out Flimby captain Geoff Banton but it was Sal Cakmak , with a break of 30 who won the match for Flimby as he defeated Ryan Barker in the last.

League leaders John Street put last week’s draw against Flimby well and truly behind them with a trio of27 breaks from, Stephen O’Hagan, Peter O’Hagan and Shaun Ayre to defeat fellow Workingtonians the United Club, 5-1. Ian Whineray was the United Club’s sole victor to win a point that enables them to take a share of fourth.

Maryport Social versus Station Road C was postponed.

In division 2, Workington Golf Club’s lead at the top was trimmed by a point as their 4-2 win at Workington Legion was bettered by a 5-1 victory at Maryport Labour for second placed Station Road A.

In the Golf Club’s victory a 27 break by Phil Sorfleet wasn’t enough for him to win his game against Andrew McMullen and even though Sandy Smith also won for the Legion, victories for Bryan Walker, Kenny Kirkwood, Robert Sim & Mark Cowen sees the golfers now eleven points clear.

Station Road A’s points came from  Grant Porter, Mike Walker, Mark Robertson, Keith Telford, Jordan Berwick with Maryport Labour’s sole win coming in the last from Cameron Stuart.

Week 22 matches – March 19th 2014

 Sim delivers trump card

Workington Golf Club were already looking good to claim the Window Outlet Cockermouth and District Snooker league division 2 and with a crushing 6-0 victory over Maryport Labour their promotion to the top division is almost guaranteed.

A Phil Sorfleet win over Labour captain Steven Armstrong got the ball rolling but with a divisions highest break of the season of 74, Robert Sim quickly made it to 2-0 to the golfers. A contribution of 27 in the next helped the golf clubs Mark Brasted limit Cameron Stuart to just two points and with Mark Cowen also winning easily it was soon 4-0. Ian Fulton did a similar job on Maryport’s Ryan Armstrong in the fifth and even though Dean Petre fought hard in the last it was golf club captain Kenny Kirkwood who delivered the whitewash.

Workington sides Senhouse and Station Road A battled out a draw in a match that went 1-1, 2-2 and eventually 3-3 to maintain their fourth and second places in the table. Senhouse’s George Davison won the vital final frame as he defeated Grant Porter in the battle of the captains.

The final fixture in division 2 this week saw Station Road B keep their second spot with a 4-2 over last placed Sun Inn. Karl Newton, Richard Nelson, Leigh Musgrave & Neil Wilkinson all won for Station A with Gary Miller and Joe Dunn proving victorious for the Aspatria side.

In the top division leaders John Street were held to a 3-3 draw against Flimby Social. With three defeats against the John Street side this season the Social outfit definitely left the happier of the two sides given the fact they were away from home. A Nigel Carruthers win in the first for Flimby was soon cancelled out as a 30 break by Tony Elliott in frame two allowed him to defeat Flimby captain Geoff Banton. Flimby’s Mike Walker took the third and even though team mate Paul Vickers made a contribution of 27 in the next it wasn’t enough as John Street’s Peter O’Hagan bettered this with a break of 33 to level proceedings up at 2-2. Stephen O’Hagan made it 3-2 with a victory over Flimby’s Martyn Fisher but it was Sal Cakmak who produced one of the performances of the evening as he defeated John Street’s Alan McLeod to deliver a satisfying draw.

Due to Seaton Legion versus Station Road C being postponed the only other fixture in division 1 resulted in an important 4-2 away win for Workington’s United Club over Maryport Social. This allowed the two teams to swap fifth and sixth places but with the bottom end of the table so tight a good run for either one of them could easily still result in a top four playoff finish. Highlight of the match came in frame two in the shape of a 25 break from United veteran Mike Dawson in his win over Craig Stuart.

Week 21 matches – March 12th 2014

John Street Juggernaut Rolls on

Workington’s John Street Club are looking more like division 1 champions as each week passes in the Window Outlet Cockermouth and District Snooker League and this week they made no exceptions with two crushing 5-1 wins against their closest rivals.

In the first of their two fixtures this week the John Street side powered to a home victory over second placed (& current champions) Workington Cons with a frame winning break of 31 from Richard McCarthy proving to be the only resistance the Cons outfit could offer. Other contributions came from John Street captain Stephen O’Hagan with 28 and even though Cons’ Mike Park made a break of 28 against Mark Tunstall the John Street player certainly ‘filled his boots’ as Park’s resultant leaves allowed him to nick the frame.

John Street’s re-arranged home fixture against third placed Station Road C just a day later ended in the same result with Paul Graham being the only Station C victor in a win over Alan McLeod. Breaks came from Tony Elliott, 26 in his win over Station C captain Kevin Basnett, and 25 and 39 from John Street’s Peter O’Hagan in his crushing victory over Barry Collins allowed the John Street ‘Juggernaut’ to roll on.

Seaton Legion strengthened their claim for a top four playoff spot with a 4-2 away win against Workington’s United Club who slipped a place into sixth.

Finally in the top flight, last week’s bottom side Maryport Social avenged their two previous defeats against opponents Flimby Social to send them to the bottom of the table with a 4-2 home win.

In the second tier, leaders Workington Golf Club eased to a 5-1 away win against second placed and fellow Workingtonians, Senhouse Street Club. Highest breaks of the match came from golfers, Bryan Walker (32) and Mark Brasted (33) but it was Senhouse captain George Davison who saved the whitewash in the last with a win over Ian Fulton.

Second placed Station Road A preserved their position in the table with a 3-3 draw against club rivals Station Road B, who stay in third. Highlight of the match came from the B teams Richard Nelson as a frame winning contribution of 39 not only kept him in with a chance of taking the break aggregates but also upholds his push for the division’s leading player trophy.

Lastly, Workington Legion defeated Maryport Labour 5-1 away leaving the two teams remaining in fifth and sixth respectively.

Trebles final & Week 20 matches – March 4th 2014

John Street retain Trebles title

John Street trio Peter O’Hagan, Stephen O’Hagan and Mark Tunstall have retained the Window Outlet Cockermouth and District Snooker League Trebles handicap title.

In a final that was closer than the score suggested last year’s champions defeated fellow club mates Tony Elliott, Alan McLeod and Shaun Ayre 5-1.

The six red format is usually one to produce a few nervy moments but with first frame between Stephen O’Hagan (+7 handicap) and Tony Elliott (+6 handicap) resulting in an easy win for O’Hagan the holders were off to the best possible start.

Frame two saw Mark Tunstall (+8 handicap) defeat Alan McLeod (+11 handicap) but as Shaun Ayre (+8 handicap) managed to take out Peter O’Hagan (Scr handicap) the champions lead was reduced to 2-1.

The fourth frame saw Ayre back at the table, nevertheless it was Tunstall who extended the champions lead to 3-1.

Stephen O’Hagan held his nerve to win the fifth frame on the black against Alan McLeod and take the champions within one frame of retaining their title.

In what proved to be the final frame of the match Tony Elliott looked likely to reduce the score and give his side a slim chance of taking the cup but with a superb brown to black clearance it was Peter O’Hagan who claimed the spoils for the second time in as many years.

In the league, division 2 leaders Workington Golf Club unveiled a late season signing in the form of Whitehaven’s Robert Sim. Adding a frame winning divisional highest break of 46 in his second frame victory over Mike Middlehurst the multiple County Champion helped his new side to a 4-2 win over third placed Station Road B.

Station Road A powered their way to a 5-1 away victory over Aspatria’s Sun Inn and even though they shaved a point off the Golf Club’s lead they still sit some seven points behind in second place. Sun Inn remain wooden placed.

The final fixture in division 2 this week saw Workington Legion get the better of higher placed Senhouse Street Club for the first time this season with a 4-2 home win. Senhouse stay firmly in fourth with Legion in fifth.

In the top division, with leaders John Street out of action this week, second placed Workington Cons ensured they kept in touch with a 5-1 home win over bottom side Maryport Social. Highlight for Cons was a Ryan Ismay 25 break with Socials best moment coming in their only frame win as Paul Lister produced a contribution of 28.

Station Road C’s away clash with the United Club yielded a 4-2 win but at 3-0 up the third placed side probably went home feeling what could have been. United stay in fifth.

Finally, Seaton Legion and Flimby produced a stalemate at 3-3 and remain in fourth and sixth respectively but with only four points between places four to seven the playoffs continue to be the target for all teams in division 1.

Week 19 matches – 27th February 2014

Cons move into second

Workington Cons were the only team to make a move in Window Outlet Cockermouth and District Snooker League division 1 this week as they shifted back in second on the back of a 4-2 away win against Seaton Legion.

At 2-2 and highlighted with a frame winning break of 32 by Seaton’s Paul Mostyn against Cons’ Richard McCarthy the Legionnaires managed to hold their own against the current league champions. Nevertheless with victories from the experienced Julian Plaza and Alan Moore the Cons side pulled away to a satisfying match win. Seaton stay in fourth

League leaders John Street were held to a surprising 3-3 home draw against relegation placed Maryport Social. At 1-1 John Street’s Alan McLeod made a frame winning contribution 34 to take his team 2-1 up but it was Socials John Fleming who countered with a break of 25 to level the match at 2-2. Peter O’Hagan then produced a convincing victory over the very capable Paul Lister to take John Street 3-2 up but it was Lister’s team mate Andrew Henderson who tied the match with a victory over John Street captain, Stephen O’Hagan to record his fifth league win on the spin.

Finally in division 1, Station Road C were also given a tough test as they recovered from 2-0 and 3-2 down to draw 3-3 at home against bottom side Flimby Social. Station C captain, Kevin Basnett was left with the unenviable task of fighting for the draw but with a fine break of 42 he defeated Nigel Carruthers with room to spare. Station C slip a place into third.

In division 2, top side Workington Golf Club lost the first frame in their home tie against Aspatria’s Sun Inn but recovered superbly as breaks of 29 & 31 from Phil Sorfleet and Ian Fulton respectively allowed them to power to a 5-1 victory.

Fourth placed Senhouse Street also lose the first frame, this time against Maryport Labour, but again an equally impressive comeback was also delivered as they powered to a 5-1 home win with breaks of 28 & 31 from Tom Lawson and Michael Poole.

With second placed Station Road A out of action this week division 2’s final fixture saw club rivals Station Road B move along side them on 62 points each with a 3-3 home draw against Workington Legion. Comfortable as it may seem the draw was far from that as Station A victories from both Graeme Renney and captain Luke Naylor were required in the final two frames to equal their opponents. Legion stay in fifth.

In the competitions the Leigh Musgrave Roofing sponsored singles handicap has now reached the Semi-final stage with the draw as follows: Peter O’Hagan (Scr) v Kevin Basnett (Scr) & Shaun Ayre (+15) v Richard Nelson (+18).

In the Doubles Handicap (also sponsored by the Leigh Musgrave Roofing) the final now awaits with: Kevin Basnett/Barry Collins (+12) taking on title holders Peter O’Hagan/Stephen O’Hagan (+7).

The Trebles handicap sees two teams from John Street Club meet in the final with current champions Peter O’Hagan/Stephen O’Hagan/Mark Tunstall vs Alan McLeod/Tony Elliott/Shaun Ayre .

7-a-side final – February 11th 2014

Cons take 7s cup

Division 1’s Workington Cons are the Window Outlet Cockermouth and District Snooker League 7-a- side TKO handicap champions. Reclaiming a title they last won in 2011 the Cons side delivered a 4-2 win against a battling Maryport Social team.

In the first frame Socials Paul Alford (+46 handicap) made a steady start as he extended his handicap lead with some fine potting against Ryan Barker (+33 handicap). Not to be deterred Barker stuck steadfastly to the task and with some equally superb potting of his own he took the last red and all the colours in two visits to win, 46-29.

In frame two Cons’ Mike Park (+5) failed to make the most of his early opportunities but with his opponent, Colin Sealby (+38) following in the same pattern the game remained in the balance. Chipping away at the handicap start Park pulled the deficit back and even though a safety exchange was required on the final black it was the Cons cueist who despatched it coolly to prove victorious, 67-65.

Cons’ Ryan Ismay (+15) made short work of his handicap deficit in frame three as Scott Lister (+46) could only watch as Ismay delivered a break of 35. Looking confident Ismay took his ‘foot of the gas’ and let the Maryport player back in the frame but with a couple of decent pots on the colours the Cons’ youngster needed just the pink. A slim chance was offered to Lister but with no hesitation it was Ismay who mopped up the leftovers to take his team 3-0 up with a 73-57 win.

In frame four Social Andrew Henderson (+19) was left with the task of stopping the rot, however in facing Cons’ Julian Plaza (+13) he had no easy task. An excellent opening pot by Henderson yielded a break of 43 and even though a resilient Plaza tried hard he could not avoid the inevitable as he went down 63-14.

Frame five swung one way and other from start to finish as Social’s Craig Stuart (+23) took on Cons’ Richard McCarthy (+15). The Cons’ cueist looked in control a couple of times throughout the game but with Stuart refusing to lie down the frame was still anybodies as the colours remained.  A couple of pots were traded but with Stuart standing firm under pressure he despatched the brown, blue and pink to continue the Social comeback, 59-50.

With the Cons side being pegged back from 3-0 to 3-2 the match took on a whole new perspective especially as the lowest handicapped player from each team faced each other, Socials Paul Lister (+15) and Cons’ Alan Moore (+2). A tactical start was inevitable with neither player giving anything away but as the last red remained Lister led by five. Knocking in the last red followed by a pink, then yellow and green left Lister a thin shot on the brown. Attempting the cut Lister missed the ball altogether and as Moore followed up with the brown and blue the advantage was back with the Cons cueist. A small safety exchange ensued on the pink but a decisive snooker by Moore left Lister in trouble. A bold attempt at an escape by Lister went astray and even though Moore deliberated over the subsequent leave the Cons player eventually potted it to win the frame and take the cup, 60-52.

Week 18 – February 20th 2014

Golfers move back to the top

Division 2’s Workington Golf Club made a massive statement of intent in the Window Outlet Cockermouth and District Snooker League this week as they defeated last week’s leaders Station Road A, 5-1 to move to the top.

A superb away win began with Golfers Bryan Walker and Mark Carruthers opening up a 2-0 lead with victories over Mike Walker and Ryan Mandale. Nevertheless it was Station A captain Grant Porter who took the next to knock Phil Sorfleet off the top division 2s leading player stats. Putting that quickly behind them Ian Fulton soon restored the Golf Club two frame lead with a win over Keith Telford and with current singles handicap champion Mark Cowen taking the next with a 25 break the Golfers led 4-1. In the last Station A’s Tom Thompson took Golf Club captain, Kenny Kirkwood close but with a cool finish it proved to be of no avail as the Golfers rose to the top of the table yet again.

Also in division 2, Station Road B kept in touch with the top two as they defeated Maryport Labour 5-1 on the road. A solid performance by the Station B outfit was only blighted by a defeat for Karl Newton as he was taken out by Labour captain Steven Armstrong.

Finally in division 2, Workington Legion saw off a battling Sun Inn side, 4-2 as the team from Aspartia could not make the most of their home advantage. Eric McMullen, Mark Lavin, Andrew McMullen and Chris Hunter all won for the Legion with the two Ben’s starring for Sun Inn as messrs Irving and Scott both won on the black in their victories over Sandy Smith and Daniel McMullen. Legion remain fifth with Sun Inn still wooden spoon placed.

In the top division leaders Workington’s John Street Club powered even further ahead as they demolished Seaton Legion 6-0 for the second time in as many weeks. Tony Elliott, Shaun Ayre, Mark Tunstall & Alan McLeod took the first four but it O’Hagan brothers, Peter and Stephen who produced the best as breaks of 39 and 27 allowed them to complete the whitewash. Seaton stay in fourth.

Travelling Station Road C showed their mettle as they defeated Workington Cons 4-2 to join their opponents in second place. Two breaks of 25, one by Barry Collins and the other by Kevin Basnett plus a win for Neil Henderson allowed the Station C side to take a 3-0 lead. However a Julian Plaza contribution of 27 saw him take the next. A Stuart Ryan win in the fifth secured the match win for Station C with Cons’ Alan Moore easing the pain in the last with a victory over Steve Garroway.

Division 1 fixtures were concluded with Flimby Social and the United Club completing their match locked at 3-3. In a game that ebbed and flowed a key win on the black for Flimby captain Geoff Banton over Mark Suitor and a crushing victory for Mike Walker (that included a break of 26) proved to be the highlights of the match. United are now joint fourth and Flimby remain at the foot of the table.

Week 17 – February 13th 2014

Cons escape defeat

With Window Outlet Cockermouth and District Snooker League division 1 fixture between leaders John Street and second placed Station Road postponed this week it gave third placed Workington Cons the opportunity to shake things up at the top as they faced the United Club.

Teetering on the edge of the relegation places in fifth, Workington’s United Club looked to have a tough task ahead of them but with Mike Dawson making a frame winning break of 25 in the first to take out Cons’ Ryan Ismay a perfect start was achieved. Frame two produced an equally welcome victory for the United Club as Clive Lister defeated Richard McCarthy and with Mark Suitor beating Cons’ Mike Park in the next a surprising 3-0 United lead was delivered. Not to be deterred by this the current division 1 holders showed the sort of fight that champions often display to win the remaining three frames for a 3-3 draw courtesy of victories by Stuart Shepherd, Alan Moore & Julian Plaza. The Cons leapfrog Station C into second, United Club stay in fifth.

The remaining game in the top division saw relegation placed Maryport Social put a dent in Seaton Legions top four hopes with a 4-2 home win. At 2-2 the tie looked finely poised, nevertheless Social pulled away with a victory from Andrew Henderson to lead 3-2 and John Fleming finished the job with a win in the last for a much needed match victory.

In division 2 Station Road A took full advantage of Workington Golf Clubs’ free week and moved to the top of the table on the back of a superb 5-1 win at Workington Legion. A close first frame win for Station A’s Ryan Mandale set the ball rolling and with further victories for team mates Mark Robertson, Mike Walker & Keith Telford they moved into a 4-0 lead. Legion star Mark Lavin stopped the rot in the next with an excellent win over Grant Porter but it was Station A’s Tom Thompson who complimented the match victory with another colours win over Eric McMullen. Highest break of the match went to Andrew McMullen with 27 despite his loss to Keith Telford. The legion remain in fifth.

Third and fourth placed Station Road B and Senhouse Street Club failed to make a dent on either teams’ league position as this week’s contest between the two teams ended in a stalemate at 3-3. Leading 3-1 Station B had visions of a handy win however with Barry Haigh inflicting a first defeat of the season on Station B’s Leigh Musgrave and Michael Poole defeating captain Luke Naylor, Senhouse went home the happier of the two sides.

Finally, Aspatria’s Sun Inn drew 3-3 with Maryport Labour in a game that never saw more than one frame between the two teams. Sun Inn remains bottom with Labour sitting just one place above in seventh.

Week 16 – February 6th 2014

Division 2 top sides stay firm

Division 2 league positions remained unchanged this week in Window Outlet Cockermouth and District Snooker League with leading sides all coming out on top convincingly in their respective fixtures.

Leaders Workington Golf Club made light work of their home game against Workington Legion as a 5-1 win maintained their four point lead. Bryan Walker, Mark Cowen, Mark Brasted, Phil Sorfleet and captain Kenny Kirkwood took the golfers to 5-0 but it was Legions Eric McMullen who nicked the last to avoid the whitewash. The Legion stay in fifth.

Second placed Station Road A matched the Golf Club result with their own 5-1 home win against Maryport Labour. Mark Robertson, Mike Walker, Keith “Iron Man” Telford, Tom Thompson & Grant Porter all won for Station A with Carl Armstrong putting up the only resistance for Maryport who remain in sixth.

Senhouse Street widened the gap between themselves and Workington Legion to fourteen points with a 6-0 home victory over wooden spoon placed Sun Inn from Aspatria.

In division 1 leaders John Street started the week in superb fashion with a 6-0 away win in their re-arranged pre-xmas fixture against Seaton Legion. Pulling no punches the John Street side won every frame convincingly and for the first time this season have put some distance between themselves and their challengers. However, with a 3-3 draw against sixth placed United Club just a day later they came back down to earth with a bump.  The United Club put up a fine display and had it not been for a couple close frame defeats they could have quite easily won the match. Performance of the evening went down to United Club’s Tony Hindmoor as he defeated one third of the new County Trebles winning side, Peter O’Hagan.

Workington Cons closed the gap on second placed Station Road C with thumping 5-1 win against Flimby Social. Highest break of the contest went down to Mike Park (28) in his win over Nigel Carruthers.

Finally in division 1, Maryport Social produced a fantastic fight back from 3-0 down to draw 3-3 with Station Road C. A league leading best break of 62 from Station C captain Kevin Basnett helped his team to the aforementioned commanding position but with contributions of 25 and 37 Socials Paul Lister demonstrated his sides fighting spirit with aplomb.

Week 15 – January 29th 2014

John Street go top

The lead at the top of the Window Outlet Cockermouth and District Snooker League division 1 changed for the third time in as many weeks with Workington’s John Street Club now sitting at the top courtesy of a 5-1 win at Flimby.

Even though the John Street side won convincingly the match will be remembered for the most shocking result of the season so far as Flimby substitute Dave Farrell beat two time County Singles finalist, Peter O’Hagan. Highest breaks of the contest came from John Street’s Tony Elliott (53) and captain Stephen O’Hagan (29). Flimby stay in fifth place.

With Workington Cons having a free week Workington’s Station Road C moved into second with a 4-2 victory at Seaton Legion. Even though Station C won they went home feeling what could have been after winning four fairly convincing frames and losing two on the black. Seaton remain in fourth.

The United Club kept their one point lead over bottom side Maryport Social, with a 3-3 draw between the two sides seeing their league positions unchanged. From 2-0 up the United Club side fancied the win but at 2-2 it was anyone’s game. Going in front again on the back of a Mark Suitor win the United Club again visualised the victory but it was Socials Andrew Henderson who had other ideas as he defeated Andrew Mitchelhill in the last.

In division 2 Workington Golf Club’s position at the top remained unchallenged as they won 4-2 against Maryport Labour. Even though the Labour side sit second from bottom in sixth place they belied this lowly position as wins for captain Steven Armstrong and Carl Armstrong must now surely give them confidence going into next week’s fixture against second placed Station Road A.

Station Road A ignored the greater experience of Senhouse Street Club to squeeze out a 4-2 win which keeps the difference between them and the golfers to four points.

Finally in the league Station Road B stay third with a 5-1 win over bottom side Sun Inn of Aspatria. Performance of the evening went to Station B’s Leigh Musgrave as with two breaks of 25 he now not only tops the break aggregate table but he also sits at the apex of the leading player stats.

In the competitions the Leigh Musgrave Roofing sponsored singles handicap has now reached the Quarter-final stage with the draw as follows: Peter O’Hagan (Scr) v Neil Henderson (+30), Mike Walker (+30) v Shaun Ayre (+15), Mark Cowen (+30) v Kevin Basnett (Scr) & Richard Nelson (+18) v Paul Smith (+40).

In the Doubles Handicap (also sponsored by the Leigh Musgrave Roofing) the Semi-finals now await with: Dave Farrell/Dave Teasdale (+40) v Kevin Basnett/Barry Collins (+12) & Mike Walker/John Teasdale (+30) v Peter O’Hagan/Stephen O’Hagan (+7) facing each other.

With all four Quarter-finals being won as the result of a decider the Trebles handicap also sits at the last four stage with Karl Newton/Mike Middlehurst/Richard Nelson v Peter O’Hagan/Stephen O’Hagan/Mark Tunstall & Martyn Fisher/Wayne Dustin/Dave Farrell v Alan McLeod/Tony Elliott/Shaun Ayre being drawn against each other.

Finally in the competitions 2012 7-a-side handicap champions, Maryport Social maintained their hopes of repeating that feat with a 4-1 Semi-final victory over Flimby Social. In the other Semi 2011 champions Workington Cons needed a 4-3 deciding frame win over three time runners up Station Road A to reach the Final that will take place on Tue Feb 11th at Flimby Social (730pm start).

Week 14 – January 22nd 2014

Golfers avoid scare.

Division 2 leaders Workington Golf Club took the last frames to avoid their first defeat in the Window Outlet Cockermouth and District Snooker League this week as playoff placed Senhouse Street gave them a real scare.

Manny Stalker and Matthew Mifsud put the first two points on the board for Senhouse Street side but with Bryan Walker and Phil Sorfleet answering quickly back the golfers pulled it back to 2-2. Senhouse’s Tom Lawson recorded a victory over last season’s singles handicap champion, Mark Cowen to put his team 3-2 up but it was the Golf Club’s Ian Fulton who saved his team’s blushes with one sided triumph over Senhouse captain George Davison for a 3-3 draw. Senhouse stay in fourth.

Station Road A narrowed the gap between themselves and the Golf Club with a 4-2 derby victory over Station Road B. The highest break of the match came from Station B’s Richard Nelson as his contribution of 39 helped him to a victory over A team captain Grant Porter. Station Road B remain in third spot.

Lastly in division 2 Workington Legion and Maryport Labour shared the spoils as a 3-3 draw kept the two sides in sixth and seventh respectively.

As last week’s division 1 leaders, Station Road C had a free week Workington Cons moved to the head of the table even though they went down 4-2 at home to the now second placed John Street Club. In a series of close frame finishes the John Street side moved 4-1 ahead; however it was two time county champion, Alan Moore who made the score respectable with a break of 35 to defeat John Street captain, Stephen O’Hagan in the last.

Seaton Legion put some strength into their fourth place in the table with a 5-1 home win over Workington’s United Club, who slip a place in the table to seventh.  Highest breaks of the match came from Seaton’s Paul Mostyn (26) and Alan Cannan (32), even though he went down to the United Club’s only victor, Andrew Mitchelhill.

Finally in the top division, Flimby produced their second win of the season, 4-2 at home to local rivals Maryport Social. At 4-0 up the whitewash was definitely on but with Social’s Paul Lister and Andrew Henderson taking the last two, propriety was achieved.

Week 13 – January 15th 2014

Station C still on top.

Division 1 leaders Station Road C kept the pressure on in the Window Outlet Cockermouth and District Snooker League this week with a 5-1 home win against the United Club.

In the all Workington clash the top side made the perfect start as wins for Neil Henderson, Stuart Ryan and Barry Collins, courtesy of a fortuitous re-spotted black, put them 3-0 ahead.

United Club’s Andrew Mitchelhill stopped the rot in the next, aided by a contribution of 27, to record a victory over the previous in-form Paul Graham.

In the fifth frame Station C captain Kevin Basnett started with a break of 48 and never looked back as he defeated Dave Chapman with ease.

In the final frame Steve Garroway maintained his top five spot in the player rankings with a convincing win over United’s Tony Hindmoor to cap a fine match win. The United club keep their fifth spot.

Also in division 1 Maryport Social put up a brave fight against current champions Workington Cons but in the end went down 4-2.

A break of 33 from Cons’ Ryan Ismay proved to be the highest of the first four frames as the two teams were locked at 2-2. A narrow win for Julian Plaza over Paul Lister took the Cons side in front at 3-2 but it was an Alan Moore break of 38 that finished the job as he defeated Socials Andrew Henderson with room to spare. Social remain at the foot of the table.

A weeks best break of 55 went down to Flimby’s Paul Vickers as he helped his side battle to a 3-3 draw with Seaton Legion, having being 2-0 up and 3-2 down. Flimby stay in sixth with Seaton in fourth.

Finally, outstanding division 1 fixture between John Street and Workington Cons was also played this week with a very competitive 3-3 draw being the end result. John Street are third with Cons sitting in second spot.

In division 2 Workington Golf Club put last week’s surprising draw behind them as breaks of 32 & 39 by Bryan Walker and Mark Cowen respectively enabled the Golfers to help themselves to a 4-2 win over Station Road B and remain at the top.

Station Road A managed to claw a point back on the leaders thanks to a 5-1 home win over Aspatria’s Sun Inn.

Senhouse Street versus Workington Legion was unfortunately postponed.

Week 12 – January 8th 2014

Sun Inn shine

The Window Outlet Cockermouth and District Snooker League got back to business after the Xmas break this week with Aspatria’s Sun Inn producing one of the shocks of the season so far as they held the previously unstoppable league leaders Workington Golf Club to a 3-3 draw.

The Sun Inn shone in the division 2 clash between the leagues bottom and top teams with Aspatria’s Mel Scott taking the first frame against Mark Caruthers. Even though the Golf Club’s Mark Brasted made a break of 25 in the second it was Tommy Mattinson who took the frame and a 2-0 lead for his team.

With a 29 break in the third from Aspatria’s Raymond Miller he dented Mark Cowen’s 100% win record to take his side into an even more impressive 3-0 scoreline.

At this point in the match the Golfer’s were definitely under pressure but in recovering to 3-3 with victories from Phil Sorfleet, Ian Fulton and Bryan Walker the league leaders delivered a comeback as equally remarkable as their opponents initial charge.

On the road, Station Road B took a 2-0 lead and eventually went on to win 4-2 against Workington Legion to stay one place above their opponents in fourth.

Senhouse Street concluded the week’s division 2 fixtures with their own profitable road trip as they defeated Maryport Labour 4-2. Senhouse remain in third with Workington Legion in fifth.

In division 1, leaders Station Road C turned round a 2-1 deficit against Flimby into a 4-2 win with the aid of a 38 break from captain Kevin Basnett. Flimby now sit in seventh.

A frame winning break of 28 from Alan Moore gave his side the necessary confidence to push on towards a home victory against Seaton Legion, who could only offer Mark Tatton as resistance in a 5-1 defeat. Cons stay in third with Seaton in fifth.

Finally, John Street’s 5-1 win at Maryport Social, in a fixture that surprisingly saw no recordable contributions,  still leaves them ominously placed in second with two matches in hand. Socials defeat sees them now on their own at the foot of the table.

Week 11 – December 18th 2013

O’Hagan in top form

The Window Outlet Cockermouth and District Snooker League produced another eventful week with John Street’s Peter O’Hagan being involved in the two most notable happenings.   With the Leigh Musgrave Roofing sponsored Singles handicap KO second round ties being played during the month of December O’Hagan stepped in to record one of the competitions highest breaks ever made as a contribution of 115 helped him in his 3-0 win over Station Road A’s John Teasdale.

Back on the league front O’Hagan was also on the end of another historic moment as his team’s division 1 fixture against Seaton Legion was probably the first to be stopped by ‘bad light’ as a power cut at Seaton prevented the contest being completed.

Other games in the top tier saw an excellent away win for third placed Workington Cons as they defeated leaders Station Road C, 4-2 away from home. Cons’ high scorers were Ryan Ismay (27 break), Richard McCarthy (41 break) & Mike Park (27 break), however Station C’s Paul Graham produced the most convincing win of the evening as he defeated Alan Moore without letting the Cons’ cueist into double figures.

The only other match in division 1 ended in a 4-2 home win for Workington’s United club against a Flimby side who will be looking for a better post Xmas. Andrew Mitchelhill, Mike Dawson, Dave Chapman & Clive Lister all won for the United Club with Wayne Dustin and Geoff Banton doing the business for Flimby.

In division 2 Workington Golf Club joined their opponents, Station Road A at the top of the table with an impressive 5-1 home win to sit as the only team in either division with a 100% record. Even though the season is just a third of the way in the golfers are looking increasingly difficult to stop in just their second season in the league. The only recordable contribution came from the Golf Club’s Phil Sorfleet with a break of 29.

Station Road B remain a threat to the teams above them as with a 5-1 home win over Maryport Labour coupled with games in hand sees them sitting nicely in fourth place ready to pounce.

Workington Legion against Aspatria's Sun Inn was postponed.

Finally, the first semi final of the 7 a side handicap TKO took place this week with the United Club coming back from the dead at 3-1 down to record a 4-3 victory over Workington Legion and now await the winners of the John Street/Senhouse tie in the final.

Week 10 – December 11th 2013

Legion upset the form book

Workington Legion upset the division 2 form book in the Window Outlet Cockermouth and District Snooker League this week as they defeated league leaders Station Road A, 4-2 away from home.

What made the result even more surprising was from 2-0 down the fifth placed side, with only one previous win to their names so far this season, turned the match around in superlative fashion to record their campaign’s most impressive result so far.

Station A reliables, captain Grant Porter and Mike Walker made short work of the first two frames but with Legion’s Chris Hunter starting the revival followed by Andrew McMullen, Sandy Smith and Mark Lavin victories the impressive match win was complete.

Also in the second tier Station Road B made massive strides in their assault for the title with their own away win, this one 5-1 against fellow townies Senhouse Street.

Finally in division 2, battle of the bottom two sides ended in a 5-1 home win for higher placed Maryport Labour as they defeated Aspatria’s Sun Inn 5-1.

In division 1 the top two teams, Station Road C and John Street, ended their fixture in what seemed to be an inevitable 3-3 draw, albeit Station C 2-0 up and 3-2 down at one stage. The highest contributions  in the match came from John Street’s Shaun Ayre (27 break) and Peter O’Hagan (25 break) as he defeated division 1 league average leader and Station C captain, Kevin Basnett.

Division 1 defending champions, Workington Cons edged towards their rivals as a 5-1 home win over Workington’s United Club closed the third placed gap leaving them nicely placed. High breaks came from two time county champion Alan Moore (38) and Mike Park (33) in their impressive Cons frame wins.

Lastly, Seaton Legion put a gap between themselves and the other aspiring playoff sides with a 5-1 home win over Maryport Social. Seaton’s Paul Mostyn started the ball rolling with a contribution of 36 and not until the final frame was any Social resistance offered as Andrew Henderson nicked a point for the sixth placed side in composed fashion.

Week 9 – December 4th 2013

Station C stay top

Division 1 leaders Station Road C maintained their slim lead in the Window Outlet Cockermouth and District Snooker league top tier this week with a 5-1 home victory over Maryport Social.

Wins for Station C’s Barry Collins and Craig Davies took care of the first two frames but Social’s John Fleming took the third to pull the score back to 2-1. Frame four finished in a winning flourish for Station C’s Paul Graham and as Station C captain Kevin Basnett started with what proved to be decisive break of 36 in the next he disposed of Paul Lister to make it 4-1. The last began with Maryport’s Colin Sealby missing little nevertheless with Station C’s Steve Garroway taking the last four colours in pieces he nicked the frame for a satisfying win.

John Street stayed in second place with their own 5-1 win albeit away to a battling United Club side. Victories for Peter O’Hagan, Alan McLeod & Mark Tunstall made it 3-0 but with Clive Lister defeating Stephen O’Hagan in the next the United club pulled one back. Shaun Ayre resumed normal service in the next to make it 4-1 and with team mate Tony Elliott producing a frame winning break of 30 in the last a comfortable victory was recorded.

In the game between Flimby Social and Workington Cons a silky frame winning contribution of 31 by Flimby captain Geoff Banton put his side in a good position at 2-2. However, as Cons’ Julian Plaza nicked the next on the black and Alan Moore took the six frame with a break of 28, Cons took the match, 4-2. Cons stay third with Flimby still at the foot in seventh.

In division 2, leaders Station Road A swept aside Maryport Labour 5-1 in superlative style with Labour captain, Stephen Armstrong being the only player to offer any resistance. Away from home the Workington outfit looked comfortable and with a third of the season now gone the Station A youngsters seem to be here for the duration.

Second placed Workington Golf Club may have moved back a point with a 4-2 away win over Workington Legion but with a game in hand and just two points behind Station A they are ominously placed. Highlight of the match came from Workington Golf Club’s Phil Sorfleet with a break of 27.

Finally, Aspatria’s Sun Inn started superbly with a break of 25 from Gary Miller to lead 1-0 but from there on in it went downhill as in losing all the remaining frames a 5-1 defeat at the hands of Workington’s Senhouse Street was recorded. The Sun Inn remain bottom with Senhouse in third.

Week 8 – November 27th 2013

Golfers look impressive

Window Outlet Cockermouth and District Snooker league division 2 side, Workington Golf club, made massive strides in their assault for the top spot this week with a 6-0 whitewash of winless Maryport Labour club.

Taking full advantage of their home fixture the golf club started in superb fashion as in restricting the first three Maryport players to a cumulative total of just 20 points they took a 3-0 lead thanks to breaks of 40 and 41 from Mark Cowen and Mark Brasted respectively. Offering up some resistance the Maryport side began to show some signs of getting into the match but in the end their efforts proved powerless as Phil Sorfleet, Ian Fulton & Kenny Kirkwood finished off the job in authoritative fashion to trail leaders Station Road A by just a point with a game in hand.

Also in the second tier home team Senhouse Street Club held youngsters, Station Road A to a 3-3 draw in the battle of the fellow Workington teams.

Leading 3-1 the leaders must have fancied finishing off the job but with the very experienced Tom Lawson and captain George Davison taking the last two for the Senhouse side a pleasing draw was obtained to keep them in third spot.

Station Road B versus Aspatria’s Sun Inn was postponed.

In the top division joint leaders John Street club slipped a place into second in the point per frame format courtesy of a home 4-2 win against Flimby.

With a game in hand over leaders Station Road C, Workington’s John Street are by no means in a position to worry but with the two teams facing each other in a couple of weeks time it should make for an interesting fixture.

Station Road C’s sole leadership ascent went down to 5-1 home win against fourth placed Seaton Legion.

At 1-1 close game looked likely given that Seaton had defeated Station C in the first game of the season, however after victories by Paul Graham, Stuart Ryan, Kevin Basnett (56 break) and Steve Garroway a comfortable match win was achieved.

Finally, Maryport Social and United Club’s joint fifth position in the table remained unchanged as the two teams battled out a 3-3 draw.

A break of 29 by John Fleming helped the Social side pull the score back to 1-1 and with another contribution, this time 29 by Paul Lister, the Maryport side tied the match again at 2-2. Frame five saw the United Club go in front for a third time with a win by Dave Chapman but it was yet another Social break that gained the draw as Andrew Henderson made 36 to take the last.

Week 7 – November 20th 2013

United look impressive

With the three top three sides out of action it was a battle of the mid table teams in division 1 of the Window Outlet Cockermouth & District Snooker League this week.

A free week for table toppers Station Road C and a postponement for John Street versus Workington Cons meant that fourth placed Seaton Legion had a chance to close the gap.

Facing a United Club side that were six points lower down in the table, the Seaton outfit must have fancied their chances however, with a superb 4-2 home win it was the United Club who improved their league status in an impressive performance.

A first frame win for Legions Paul Mostyn followed by a victory for United’s Clive Lister, that included a break of 27, enabled the two teams to share the opening frames.

Seaton Scott Messenger and United’s Mike Dawson took care of the next two with convincing victories to resume parity.

At this point in the match it a draw probably looked on the cards but with a surprising win for Tony Hindmoor over Seaton’s Mark Tatton and a black ball victory for Dave Chapman over Alan Cannan in the last a satisfying match victory was delivered.

The only other game in division 1 ended in a first league win of the season for Flimby Social as 4-2 home victory over Maryport Social proved that confidence is everything following on from their cup win in the previous week.

In division 2 Station Road A increased their lead at the top of the table with a 4-2 derby win over  Station Road B.

Victories for John Teasdale, Mike Walker and Mark Robertson helped the A side take a 3-0 lead but as Leigh Musgrave and Neil Wilkinson took the next two a nervy last frame was in prospect.

Nevertheless in reducing his opponent to just 11 points it was the A teams’ Captain Grant Porter who completed the job with a commanding win over Luke Naylor.

Also in the second tier Senhouse Street failed to make the most of their home advantage as they went down 4-2 to Workington Golf Club.

With the first four frames going to the travelling golfers an unassailable lead was gained but with a frame winning break of 25 from Michael Poole in the next and victory for team captain George Davison in the last Senhouse put some credibility in the scoreline.

Finally, Maryport Labour recorded their first positive result of the season as they drew 3-3 against a travelling Workington Legion. Credit had to go to the Maryport side as in trailing 3-1 another defeat looked likely nevertheless wins for Carl Armstrong and Shaun Moore enabled them to go home delighted.

November 13th 2013 – 7 a side TKO

Holders crash out

The Window Outlet Cockermouth and District Snooker League round 2 of the 7 a side handicap team knock out took place this week with current holders Seaton Legion crashing out to Workington Cons 4-1.

Breaks of 54 and 31 from Mike Park and Richard McCarthy helped Cons take a sizable match lead and even though Seaton’s lone frame win proved to be a small consolation it was the 2011 champions who marched on through to the semi-finals in an impressive home victory.

Station Road A probably pulled off the most impressive result of the round as they defeated Workington Golf Club 4-0, albeit away from home.

With the league form of both sides considered a close game would have probably been the most favoured result; however as a Station A whitewash was recorded they maintained their tag of cup specialists having reached the final in the last three years.

Flimby Social Club gave their season a huge boost as they defeated a solid Station B outfit 4-2, albeit from 1-0 down thanks to a break of 30 from Station B’s Richard Nelson, away from home.

A tricky start to their league campaign hadn’t left Flimby with a massive amount of confidence going into the cup but with acommanding away win it must surly give them greater conviction going into next weeks league fixture against Maryport Social.

The last of the rounds quarter-final wins went to Maryport Social as they recorded the weeks closest victory, 4-3 against Station Road C.

A good home win for Social keeps their hopes alive of repeating their 2011 cup triumph with the draw now eagerly awaited by the four remaining teams.

Week 6 – November 6th 2013

Station A go top

This week in the Window Outlet Cockermouth and District Snooker League Workington’s Station Road A took sole leadership of division 2 with a 6-0 away win over Aspatria’s Sun Inn.

At the half way point and after three relatively close frames the Station A outfit had managed to carve out 3-0 lead thanks to victories by captain Grant Porter, Mike Walker & John Teasdale.

This position of strength seemed to give Station A’s remaining players even more confidence and with altogether more convincing wins Keith Telford, Ryan Mandale & Jordan Berwick completed the whitewash for the new table toppers.

Also in division 2 Workington Legion and fellow townies Senhouse Street Club fought out a 3-3 draw in a highly competitive contest.

With the first four frames shared a close one always looked on the cards and even though Senhouse’s Michael Poole took the match lead the draw proved inevitable as Legion’s Mark Lavin won convincingly with a 26 break to boot.

In the top division Station Road C took advantage of leaders John Street’s free week to join them at the top with a 4-2 away win at the United Club.

A break of 32 from Station C captain Kevin Basnett helped gain a 3-0 match lead but with a frame winning contribution of 38 from veteran Mike Dawson followed by a victory from team mate and captain Andrew Mitchelhill the United Club must have fancied the draw. As the last frame developed Station C’s Neil Henderson had other ideas and with a break of 28 he sealed the win with some room to spare.

Current division 1 champions Workington Cons kept in touch with top two Station C and John Street with a 4-2 home win at the expense of Maryport Social.

Leading 2-1 Cons’ Mike Park soon made it 3-1 with a break of 29 but with Maryport captain Colin Sealby beating Richard McCarthy in the next the Social side were still in it. Nevertheless Cons’ Alan Moore used all his experience in the final frame to take the match victory with a win over Andrew Henderson.

Finally in division 1 Seaton Legion turned a 2-1 deficit into a pleasing 4-2 home win over Flimby as Mark Tatton and Alan’s, Cannan and Evans took the last three frames to keep them in fourth place in the league.

Week 5 – October 30st 2013

John Street held

Division 1 league leaders John Street were held to a surprise 3-3 home draw in the Window Outlet Cockermouth and District Snooker League this week.

Throwing the form book out of the window Maryport Social ensured there was never more than one frame in the match and in starting with a win from captain Colin Sealby which included a break 33 the social side were off and running.

Frame two went John Street’s way as with an evening’s best of 54 Tony Elliott defeated Maryport’s Craig Stuart to level the score.

As the third frame transpired it was Social’s Paul Lister who took the bull by the horns and with a break of 45 he was victorious over Shaun Ayre.

John Street’s Alan McLeod tied up the proceedings in frame four with a win over Scott Lister but as Peter O’Hagan delivered a break of 47 in the next to defeat  John Fleming, John Street moved 3-2 ahead.

In the last John Street captain Stephen O’Hagan pushed hard to deliver the win but with Andrew Henderson making a break of 25 the draw was secured in a very satisfying Maryport Social performance.

Second placed Station Road C were also tested this week as they were constrained to a 3-3 away draw against winless Flimby Social.

Leading 2-0, helped by a break of 29 from Paul Vickers, Flimby took an important match lead, however as Station C captain Kevin Basnett and team mate Paul Graham made breaks of 26 and 29 respectively the score was soon 2-2.

Frame five went Flimby’s way with a win for Martyn Fisher nevertheless it was Station C’s Steve Garroway who tied the match up with a victory over David Teasdale.

In a trio of top tier draws it was Seaton Legion who completed the set with a 3-3 against visitors Workington Cons. A match that swung back and forth ended with Seaton captain Alan Evans gaining the important last point with a win over Cons’ Mike Park.

In division 2 Workington Golf Club maintained their unbeaten start of the season with a 6-0 white wash over Aspatria’s Sun Inn.

Workington’s Senhouse Street Club were equally impressive as they defeated Maryport Labour 5-1 at home to prolong their own fine start to the season.

Finally Station Road B defeated fellow townies Workington Legion 4-2 at home to keep in touch with their rivals at the top of the table. Highest break of the match came from Legion’s Eric McMullen (27).

Week 4 – October 23rd 2013

First defeat for Station A

This week in division 2 of the Window Outlet Cockermouth and District Snooker League Workington Golf Club inflicted a first defeat of the season on Station Road A with a superb 4-2 away win.

Going 3-0 up courtesy of wins from Kenny Kirkwood, Mark Cowen and Phil Sorfleet the Golf club put themselves in a very powerful position. However as fellow Workington side, Station A came back with victories from Mike Walker and Ryan Mandale an interesting final frame was set up. Looking strong Station A’s Steven Cook put up a brave fight but with extreme resilience it was the Golf clubs Mark Carruthers who hung on to take the frame on the colours for a very satisfying match victory.

Also in division 2 Station Road B produced a clean sweep as Richard Nelson, Mike Middlehurst, Karl Newton, Neil Wilkinson, Graeme Renney & Barry Graham all won in a 6-0 away victory over Maryport Labour.

Aspatria’s Sun Inn versus Workington Legion was postponed.

In division 1 leaders John Street stretched their league lead with a 5-1 home win over Seaton Legion. Seemingly powerless against the might of the former champions Seaton could only manage to dent the score with a fifth frame victory for Mark Tatton over John Street’s Shaun Ayre.

A tough start to the season had Flimby Social on the back foot in week four but with a home tie against an under strength United Club side facing them surely fortunes were about to change. This hope proved to be short lived as with wins from Willie Fearon, Tony Hindmoor, Ian Graham, Clive Lister & Andrew Mitchelhill Workington’s United Club moved into a 5-0 lead. Undeterred by the match score Flimby’s Dave Teasdale saved his team’s blushes in the last with a victory over Brian Kendall for what ended up a 5-1 defeat.

Finally in division 1 at 2-0 up Station Road C could have been forgiven for starting to think about a surprising away victory over current division 1 champions Workington Cons, nevertheless as Cons pulled it back to 2-2 thoughts were reversed. A break of 45 from Cons’ Alan Moore took care of frame five but it was Station C captain Kevin Basnett who delivered the 3-3 draw with a victory over Cons’ Andrew Sharp.

The next league meeting will be on Monday 4th November in Maryport Labour Club, 730pm. Could all captains please sent a representative.

October 26th 2013 – TKO round 1

Defending champs win through

Seven a side team KO defending champions Seaton Legion survived a first round final frame decider as they defeated Workington’s United Club, 4-3 in the Window Outlet Cockermouth and District Snooker League this week.

Kicking off this season’s TKO Allan Stephenson made the ideal start for Seaton as he defeated United captain Dave Chapman on the black. The excitement continued in the second as another black ball win, this time for United’s Ian Whineray, tied up the score as the expense of Legion captain Alan Evans.

Frame three turned out to be a scrappy affair however it was not without drama as yet another black ball was required to decide the game with United’s Tony Hindmoor falling over the line against Seaton’s Paul Mostyn.

At 2-1 to the United Club the match produced one of the evenings more convincing frames as Legion’s Scott Messenger took out Mark Suitor with some room to spare.

Mark Tatton made a commanding start to the next with a break of 30 as he took a near 60 point lead against United veteran, Mike Dawson. Not to be deterred Dawson dug deep and even though he was eventually defeated it took until the brown before Tatton took his team into a 3-2 lead.

In frame six United ‘s Andrew Mitchelhill clawed back the handicap deficit back quickly only for Legion’s Paul Smith to come right back to and re-establish his advantage. Un-nerved by this comeback Mitchelhill powered on and in comfortable style he took the tie into a decider.

As final frames go nerves usually play a part but not this time as Seaton’s Alan Cannan took on United’s Clive Lister. Showing no mercy it was Cannan who potted virtually every ball he went for to take the defending champions into the quarter-finals with ease.

Division 2’s Workington Golf Club made the most of their handicap start against multiple TKO winners John Street Club with a 4-2 home victory over the division 1 opponents. A break of 32 from John Street’s Neil Armstrong took care of the first but it was the Golf clubs Brian Walker, Mark Carruthers and Ian Fulton who pushed their team into a 3-1 lead. Tony Elliott managed to pull one back for John Street but it was current handicap singles champion, Mark Cowen who put the Golf club through with a victory over Gavin Simpson.

2011 winners and current division 1 champions Workington Cons scraped through in a deciding frame shoot out against division 2’s Workington Legion, 4-3 albeit away from home.

Runners up in the last three years, Workington’s Station Road A went through into the QF’s with a 4-2 home win in the battle of the division 2 sides.

Station Road B took on fellow division 2 side Maryport Labour and after losing the first frame on the black they powered home to victory 4-2.

Flimby Social and Maryport Social both received byes into the QF’s.

Station Road C were awarded a walkover against Aspatria’s Sun Inn.

Week 3 – October 9th 2013

Station Road C way forward

This week in the Window Outlet Cockermouth and District Snooker League division 1 side Station Road C continued to look forward as they turned around a 2-0 deficit into a 4-2 home win against a strong John Street side.

Even at this initial stage the top division is more than likely to go down to the wire but with an early psychological advantage gained for the Station C side this could make clashes between the two Workington outfits even more interesting.

A 28 break from John Street’s Simon Frazer in the first put paid to Craig Davies and as team mate Tony Elliott delivered the goods in the next against Station C’s Stephen Little a 2-0 John Street lead was gained.

At this point Station C needed a game changer and it was Barry Collins who was faced with the challenge as he took on John Street’s Alan McLeod.

A tactical encounter between the two talented cueists ensued, however it was the brilliance of Collins that eventually shone through as the Station C enigma took the frame.

Frame four was equally impressive for the Station C side as Paul Graham took out multiple league singles, doubles and trebles champion Peter O’Hagan with room to spare.

At 2-2 the game was in the balance but with Station C’s county champion Kevin Basnett and team mate Steve Garroway beating Shaun Ayre and Stephen O’Hagan convincingly a rapid 4-2 win was achieved.

Also in division 1 champions Workington Cons made light work of their away fixture against promoted United Club as they defeated them 5-1 away.

A 5-0 lead for the Cons outfit may have looked liked a path to a whitewash but United captain Andrew Mitchelhill had other ideas. An early lead for Mitchelhill boded well but as Cons’ Richard McCarthy came back the frame went to the black. A rash shot from McCarthy left a tricky long black for Mitchelhill but as he stroked it in calmly the whitewash was averted.

Finally in division 1 Maryport Social v Seaton Legion was postponed.

In division 2 pacesetters Station Road A added to their confident start with a 5-1 away win over fellow townies Workington Legion. Station A captain Grant Porter top scored on the night (and indeed the week in either division) with a break of 32.

Workington’s Senhouse Street turned a 2-0 arrears into a 4-2 away victory against Station Road B to keep in touch at the top of the table. Senhouse’s Manny Stalker and Michael Poole made the highest contributions of the match with breaks of 25 and 28 respectively.

In the final fixture of the week, Aspatria’s Sun Inn lost the first frame in their home tie against Maryport Social only to flip it round into a 4-2 win and set their league campaign rolling.

Week 2 – October 2nd 2013

Station Road A impress

Division 2 side Station Road A added to their first week win with an impressive 6-0 home victory over Maryport Labour in the Window Outlet Cockermouth and District Snooker League this week.

The young Workington outfit have looked determined right from the off this season and with the experience gained from last term they surely must be regarded as title contenders. A 2-0 lead was quickly turned into 3-0 as John Teasdale defeated Maryport captain Stephen Armstrong comfortably with a 27 break to boot. Three soon became four with a narrow win for Station A ‘Iron Man’ Keith Telford and with Jordan Berwick and Mark Robertson finishing off the deal the whitewash was complete.

Workington’s Senhouse Street Club had an equally successful week as they defeated Aspatria’s Sun Inn, 6-0 at home. As comprehensive as the scoreline suggests the Aspatria side could probably count themselves as unfortunate. Barring an easy victory for Senhouse Street’s David Bracken in the first the remaining five frames were all decided on the last few colours with the Sun Inn losing every one of them.

Finally in division 2 Workington Golf Club made a winning start to their challenge for the title with a 5-1 home victory over Workington Legion.

Station Road B had no fixture this week.

In division 1 Workington’s John Street Club are setting the early pace by adding to last week’s 5-1 victory over Flimby with a 6-0 win over promoted fellow townies the United Club. In a game that surprisingly saw no recordable contributions (breaks over 25) the first frame could probably be looked upon as a significant moment in the match. In a frame that ebbed and flowed it took the final ball to decide its fate at United Club captain Dave Chapman faced Simon Frazer. A failed attempt on the black by Chapman left it all but safe as Frazer doubled the frame winning ball the length of the table in what ended up being the kick start to a commanding match win.

With a bye last week champions Workington Cons started their 2013/14 campaign with a 4-2 home win over Flimby Social. The top break of the match, and indeed the week came in frame two as Cons’ Mike Park’s contribution of 51 took his side into a 2-1 lead, however with Flimby’s Nigel Carruthers squaring it up it was game on. Flimby’s Paul Vickers looked to have half a chance against Andrew Sharp in the next but as the Cons cueist took the match lead it gave his team mate Alan Moore the necessary confidence to capitalise in the last as he defeated Martyn Fisher.

The final game of the week ended with Station Road C putting behind them a first week loss against Seaton Legion with a 5-1 home win over Maryport Social. Top breaks came from Station C’s Steve Garroway (28) and captain Kevin Basnett (41) in their fifth and sixth frame wins.

Seaton Legion were in receipt of a free week.

Week 1 – September 25th 2013

Seaton start impressively

The Window Outlet Cockermouth and District Snooker League season 2013/14 kicked off this week with last season’s 7 a side team KO champions, Seaton Legion producing the most impressive result of the top division’s fixtures in defeating Station Road C 4-2.

An early 2-1 lead for Station Road C looked good for the Workington side but with victories for Seaton’s Allan Stephenson, Alan Evans (Capt.) and Alan Cannan a superb turnaround was complete.

In division 1’s second fixture last season’s league runners up John Street quickly put a first frame loss behind them to overcome Flimby Social with considerable ease, 5-1 away. An imposing first week victory for the 2009 champions came with frame winning breaks of 28, 32 & 49 from Peter O’Hagan, Alan McLeod and captain Stephen O’Hagan respectively. Flimby’s top break of 31 came from Wayne Dustin’s in his initial frame win.

The clash between the top division’s two promoted teams, division 2 Champions, The United Club and travelling side Maryport Social ended in a surprising 4-2 win for last season’s runners up. A close first frame that resulted in a black ball win for Social’s Craig Stuart proved to be a significant moment as the remaining games were taken fairly convincingly even though no recordable contributions were made.

Champions Workington Cons had a free week due to division 1 being made up of seven teams this season.

In division 2 Station Road A made the perfect start by defeating relegated Senhouse Street, 4-2 at home. From a guaranteed winning position of 4-0 to the young Station Road sides confidence must have been high but as experienced David Bracken and Tom Lawson took the last two the Senhouse outfit went home feeling upbeat.

The final game of the week ended in a 5-1 away triumph for Workington’s Station Road B over Aspatria’s Sun Inn.

Maryport Labour versus Workington Golf Club was postponed and Workington Legion had a free week.

The next monthly meeting will be held on Tuesday 8th October in Seaton Legion at 730pm. A hard copy of this season’s league fixtures plus all competition draws will be issued. Could all teams please send a representative.
