Presentation night – 17th May 2013

Parrott caps fine end to season

Former World & UK Snooker Champion, John Parrott capped a fine end to the Window Outlet Cockermouth & District Snooker League 12/13 season with a superbly entertaining display in front of a packed Workington WMC crowd.

Over the last few seasons the league has seen the presentation night develop but the former BBC1 ‘Question of Sport’ captain certainly delivered the full entertainment package.

Parrott played seven compelling frames making countless 50 plus breaks as he caressed the cue ball around the table. Walking away undefeated Parrott didn‘t have it all his own way as in the first frame of the night Seaton Legion’s Allan Stephenson ran the nine time ranking event winner close to the ooh’s & aah’s of the crowd.

The 1991 World & UK Champion had the Station Road Club masses in stitches with his Q & A routine later in the evening, even keeping some of the more vociferous members of the audience at bay with his witty scouse banter.

Throughout the evening the BBC snooker and racing pundit was the consummate professional, while presenting the season’s trophies, posing for photos and signing autographs once the evening had concluded.

The night was not only about snooker though, as the evening also raised much needed funds for a charity now close to the leagues heart. The Charlie Bear Cancer Appeal featured at last season’s presentation night as a thank you from Senhouse A team player, John Reynolds to the Freemans Hospital, Newcastle who had looked after him throughout his treatment. Sadly John passed away towards the end of last year so without hesitation the league used the night to front the charity again, this time in John’s memory.

With that in mind donations began to flow and by the end of the evening £875 was raised, league Chairman Kevin Basnett quoted, “We had a minute’s applause in memory of John at the start of the evening and with the money raised throughout the night it was clear to see what a popular bloke John was”. Basnett added, “We are immensely proud to be able to use the league to raise funds for such fantastic charities. It started in 2007 and our total now stands at £6375 of which I am immensely proud to be a part of”.

Eight months in the planning for presentation evening didn’t come together however without the help of a few generous people on the night, Colin Fawcett of Station Rd Club, Graeme Pritt of the Window Outlet, Alan Cannan of JA Cannan Ltd, Luke Naylor from the Station Road B team, league treasurer Dave Chapman and league secretary Andrew Mitchelhill, who all played their part in an efficiently run event.

Finally though, the league stressed that the evening wouldn’t have been possible without the support of the leagues sponsors, Graeme Pritt of The Window Outlet, Workington (01900 873555), Alan Cannan of JA Cannan Ltd (Solid Fuel Flue Specialist – Tel: 01900 601197) and Leigh Musgrave of Leigh Musgrave Roofing (01946 833537). Basnett quoted “I’m delighted that the league continues to support worthwhile charities in such difficult financial times but I cannot thank John, Graeme, Alan & Leigh enough for the support they have offered in making this night possible”.

Playoff finals – 7/8th May 2013

Cons and Station A take playoff titles

Division 1’s Workington Cons and division 2’s Station Road A have won their respective Window Outlet Cockermouth and District Snooker League top four playoff titles with victories over John Street and Workington Golf Club.

Division 1 champions Workington Cons retained their top four title by coming back from 2-0 down against second placed John Street to preside 4-3 in a highly enthralling encounter; however in the division two final a 2-0 lead gained by Station Road A was capitalised on as they ran out 4-2 winners against Workington Golf Club.

In the division 1 final Cons’ Julian Plaza started the first frame well with a break of 23 to take a slight lead with one red left. Some excellent snookers by John Street’s Mark Tunstall halted Plaza’s progress and with some fine play Tunstall won comfortably 66-22.

Frame two between Cons’ Mike Park and John Street’s Peter O’Hagan was a dour affair with all the colours running out of commission during a series of extended safety exchanges. Nevertheless it was O’Hagan who upped his game and with a couple of smaller breaks towards the end of the frame he won easily 83-20.

Cons’ Ryan Adams made the most of his opportunities in the next as John Street captain Stephen O’Hagan failed to capitalise on his. Taking all the colours in a couple of visits it was Adams who clawed a frame back for his side in a very important 63-36 victory.

A break of 29 by Ryan Ismay gave the Cons’ player the perfect start to frame four. John Street’s Simon Frazer did have his chances but Ismay’s advantage proved to be too great and the Cons’ cueist won without difficulty 76-16.

At 2-2 John Street’s Alan McLeod potted well and took an early 27 point lead. Hanging in Cons’ Stuart Shepherd took the frame all the way to the black and with a superbly executed pot he claimed a first time match lead for his team with a 57-56 victory.

Frame six was the most one sided of the evening with John Street’s Tony Elliott taking the plaudits as a well constructed break of 34 helped him on his way to a 60-1 victory over Cons’ two time County Champion Alan Moore.

The decider saw John Street’s Tony Elliott out of the hat first where he was to face Cons’ Julian Plaza. With Elliott right back on the table after his previous frame win and Plaza sitting out since his frame one defeat the John Street player definitely held the advantage. This however proved to work out differently as Plaza potted majestically to take the title with a convincing 57-17 win.

The division 2 final saw Station RoadA’s Mark Robertson attack from the off and with some confident potting he took a 40 point lead against the Golf club’s Phil Sorfleet. Even though Sorfleet managed pot a few he could not stop Robertson powering on to 57-10 win.

A solid start for Station A ‘Iron man’ Keith Telford took him to a 31 point lead against the Golf clubs Singles Handicap champion Mark Cowen. However with just the green remaining Cowen had managed to level the scores. With confidence restored Cowen looked the likely winner but with other ideas Telford cleared the colours in two visits for a 59-41 victory.

Frame three proved to be an even affair with Station A’s John Teasdale taking on Golf club’s Andrew Wells. Going all the way down to the last two colours it was Wells who only needed one ball and with a bizarre double kiss on the pink he took the ball he required for a 53-44 win.

The Golf Club’s Mark Brasted had the difficult task of overturning Station A’s division 2 leading player Grant Porter in frame four but with the colours left he was still in it. Sharing the remaining balls up to the black the game was still undecided but with an excellent pot Brasted took the frame 61-61 to level the match score at 2-2.

In the next Station A teenager Jordan Berwick showed experience beyond his years to win a scrappy encounter against the Golf club’s Bryan Walker. Potting a great blue followed by a doubled pink sealed Walker’s fate as Berwick took the match lead again with a 40-21 victory.

The sixth frame followed a similar pattern to that of the last and with the brown remaining Station A’s Mike Walker led Golf club captain Kenny Kirkwood by 9. In potting a good brown and blue Kirkwood looked to be taking the match into a decider but in going in-off on the pink the chance was gone. Taking his opportunity without hesitation Walker doubled the pink for a 41-29 frame and title win to the delight of this team mates.

30th April 2013 – Division 1 decider (plus playoff semi's)

Cons make it three in a row.

Workington’s Cons have retained their Window Outlet Cockermouth and District Snooker division 1 title this week with a 3-3 home draw against second placed John Street Club in the last game of the season.

This season the Cons side have been a model of consistency with four of their players finishing in the top ten of the leading player averages but more importantly it now puts the Workington outfit on three title victories in a row.

Needing just a draw due to their superior wins tally a 3-1 lead took them over the line in what turned out to be a very nervy encounter. The John Street side couldn’t have started the tie any worse as Cons’ Mike Park cleared with 25 to defeat Singles handicap runner up Alan McLeod.

Frame two proved to be one of the longest affairs of the season as Cons two time county champion Alan Moore and John Street’s Mark Tunstall battled it out for nearly 80 minutes. In a safety dominated game Tunstall made the better of the chances he was presented with and in the end ran out a relatively comfortable winner.

With the match score at 1-1 the next frame was key and with John Street’s Simon Frazer leading by 31 with just 35 left on the table against Cons captain Ryan Adams an important match advantage looked to be almost certain. Nevertheless Adams never gave in and in taking the frame to the black he was still in it. Frazer obtained the first chance but with the white tight on the cushion the black wasn’t easy. Lining up the shot Frazer looked confident but as he missed the black and followed the white into the pocket a massive turnaround occurred.

The next put John Street talisman Peter O’Hagan up against Cons’ Ryan Ismay. Missing a few early chances O’Hagan gave Ismay some confidence and in making 36 from an O’Hagan leave Ismay took an important lead. O’Hagan tried hard to get back into the frame but unfortunately the damage was already done and Ismay captured the frame to secure the top division title.

The last two frames went to the John Street side courtesy of wins by Stephen O’Hagan and Tony Elliott over Julian Plaza and Stuart Shepherd. These victories took John Street’s points tally to the same as that of the champions, an achievement they can look back on with their heads high.

With no time to contemplate their league win the Cons side were to face fourth placed Station Road C in the first of division 1’s top four playoff semi-finals just two days later. A contest that saw the Cons side go 3-0 looked to be decided pretty quickly, however as Station C won the next two pressure was applied. In the last Station C captain Kevin Basnett took a 20 point lead into the colours only to see Cons’ Alan Moore gain three fortunate snookers in a row, the last which saw Basnett go in-off. That aside Moore still needed to pot the balls and in clearing the table with 25 he nicked the frame to take his side through to next week’s final with a 4-2 win.

In the other division 1 top four playoff semi-final John Street were untroubled as they defeated third placed Derwent 4-1. John Street produced a number of breaks in the 20’s demonstrating their dominance, something they hope they will be able to draw on in a week’s time to end a run of four runners up spots in the last five years.

Division 2 top four playoff semi-finals produced a little more drama with third placed Station Road A taking on second placed Maryport Social in the first of the two ties. Leading 3-0 Maryport Social had the game all but won but going into a decider a 3-3 they were feeling it. This comeback was soon forgotten about as Station A’s Mike Walker needed a snooker with pink and black left. Nevertheless a superbly executed snooker, a foul and two pots later Walker had taken his team into the final in a remarkable turnaround for the 7 a side handicap runners up.

The remaining playoff semi in division 2 pitted champions the United Club against fourth placed debutants Workington Golf Club. Another remarkable match went down to a decider and holding their nerve if was the golfers who presided 4-3 to take them into next week’s showpiece final against Station Road A.

Round 28 matches (final league fixtures..almost)  – 24th April 2013

United take Division 2 title

Workington’s United Club have taken the Window Outlet Cockermouth and District Snooker league division 2 title in the very last game of the season despite a 4-2 away defeat at the hands of Workington Golf Club.

In the leagues point a frame format the United Club required just two frames to secure the title and at 4-1 down the pressure was well and truly on. Left with expectation of his team on his shoulders Andrew Mitchelhill started the last nervously; nevertheless he steadied himself and managed to take an early 25 point lead. The Golf clubs Mark Carruthers gave Mitchelhill plenty to think about by closing the gap to just a few points but with a small break to lead by 20 going into the colours the United Club cueist was in the driving seat. Gaining his chance to close the deal he took it with open arms and with a clearance to the black Mitchelhill took the frame and title to the delight of this team mates.

The match had started well for the United Club as Clive Lister took the first against Bryan Walker but with victories for the Golf clubs Mark Brasted, Mark Cowen, Ken Kirkwood and Phil Sorfleet the pressure had been applied. An outside chance of finishing third had been the Golfers target going into the match but with Mitchelhill winning the last it was fourth they were to settle for, still an excellent achievement gaining a playoff place in their first season.

Even though the United Club had headed the table for nearly the whole of the second half of the season Maryport Social did have a chance to nick the title in the last match, but as they could only defeat Aspatria’s Sun Inn 4-2 away they had to console themselves with second place. Their comfort is promotion to division 1 but with a 7 a side plate winner’s trophy and Paul Lister heading the break aggregate table (total 313) coupled with the divisions highest break of 64 it can definitely be regarded as successful season for the Maryport outfit.

Station Road A lost the first two frames against club rivals Station Road B but with a fine comeback they ran out 4-2 winners to claim third spot. After a difficult season in division 1 last term to bounce right back would have been an incredible feat for the A team but again a with runners up spot in the 7 a side handicap KO and a divisions leading player award for Captain Grant Porter (P 25 W 21) can hardly go down as a disappointment.

Finally in division 2 Workington Legion ended an up and down season with a 4-2 home victory over wooden spooners Maryport Labour to finish in sixth. Eric McMullen made the fixtures highest break with 25 in frame five.

In division 1 the title is still undecided as one outstanding fixture which is between Workington Cons and John Street Club is still to play.

With Cons running out 4-2 away winners against relegation escapees Flimby and John Street proving victorious at 5-1 over relegated Senhouse B the two teams are now tied at the top on 112 points.

With more wins than John Street a draw will be good enough for the Cons side to retain a title they have won for the last two years.

The Cons game was very much closer than the scoreline suggests as two black ball wins for Ryan Ismay and Stuart Shepherd (30 break), that had both looked likely to go the other way, left the Cons side breathing a huge sigh of relief. Other scoring contributions came from Flimby’s Mike Walker (25 break) and Cons’ Mike Park (31 break).

John Street’s 5-1 over Senhouse B turned out to be relatively comfortable as 46 break from Peter O’Hagan had made it 4-0. A frame winning break of 27 by Senhouse B captain David Bracken stopped the rot but by claiming the last John Street ensured they were firmly in the hunt to reclaim a title they last won in 2009.

Keswick’s third placed Derwent Club faced fourth placed Station Road C in their final fixture and even though the Station C side ran out 4-2 winners the two sides’ league positions remained unchanged. Breaks came from Derwent’s Lee Crookes with 38 in the first and with Station C captain Kevin Basnett making breaks of 43 and 59 in the fourth he assured himself of the division’s highest break aggregate trophy with a total of 1080.

Lastly in division 1 7 a side handicap champions Seaton Legion ended the season on a high note as they defeated relegated Senhouse A 5-1 to finish in fifth.

Singles final & Round 27 matches – 17th April 2013

Cowen takes singles crown

Workington Golf Clubs Mark Cowen (+35 handicap) has taken the Leigh Musgrave Roofing Cockermouth and District Snooker league singles handicap title at his first attempt with a thrilling 4-3 over John Streets Alan McLeod (+25).

The obligatory tactical first frame resulted in small scoring visits but with three in-offs towards the end of the frame from McLeod it was Cowen who took it 72-53.

McLeod found his long game early in frame two and with few breaks in the teens he found himself holding a handy lead going into the colours. Yellow and green were traded but a safety mistake by Cowen allowed McLeod in to pot the balls he required for a 64-32 victory.

Frame three saw Cowen open up a 30 point lead and with the colours remaining the advantage still stood at 25. Yellow, green and brown with position on the blue looked like McLeod was going to steal the frame but as he unexpectedly missed Cowen took his chance to go into a 2-1 lead with a 54-33 win.

An early break of 29 from Cowen put the Golf club cueist 40 points up but as McLeod replied with his own contribution of 29 his confidence grew. Continuing in this vane McLeod potted majestically and took the frame with little challenge 77-55.

At 2-2 Cowen responded to McLeod’s excellent display in frame four and with some steady potting backed up with some equally steady safety play he went within one frame of the title with 59-22 win.

The sixth frame began with Cowen potting one or two nice balls but as McLeod upped his game with breaks of 24 and 43 he took the match to a very fitting decider, 77-31.

Both players were reluctant to give each other a chance in the last as safety set the tone, however it was Cowen who seemed to pick up the better of the scraps and in building a useful lead he became strong favourite. A couple of successful snookers on the brown by McLeod gave Cowen food for thought but as he was finally presented with his chance he took it with open arms for a 81-49 frame and title victory.

Thanks to Senhouse Street Club for providing an final excellent venue.

In the Window Outlet sponsored league Workington’s United Club have the destiny of the division 2 title in their own hands. A 4-2 home win against what they consider to be their bogey team, Workington Legion, now means with just one game left they require only two frames against Workington Golf club to secure the trophy. United’s Andrew Mitchelhill top scored in the match with a break of 27.

Second placed Maryport Social made sure they have a chance of nicking the division 2 title from the United Club with a 6-0 over local rivals Maryport Labour. Social Paul Lister scored the division’s top break in frame four with a superb contribution of 64. The only other recordable break came from team mate Craig Stuart in the form of a 36 break in frame one.

Workington’s Station Road A have a slim chance of finishing second (hence promotion) on the back of a 5-1 home win against Aspatria’s Sun Inn. Top break of 25 came from Station A’s Mark Robertson. A superior win ration over Maryport Social means they must better Socials result next week by two frames (against their B team) to overtake them.

Lastly in division 2 Workington Golf club slipped down into fourth with a 4-2 home defeat against Station Road B. The Golf club are assured of a top four playoff spot as they hold a twelve point leader over their victors.

In division 1 leaders Workington Cons’ postponed game against second placed John Street has now turned into a title decider (in ten days time) provided one team doesn’t win 6-0 and another loses 6-0 next week.

Station Road C’s 5-1 away win against Senhouse B assured their playoff place with captain Kevin Basnett producing the highest break of 36 on the night in his pink ball win over Senhouse A’s Michael Poole.

A 5-1 home win for Keswick’s Derwent Club over Senhouse B gives them third spot this season regardless of the result in their last fixture against Station Road C.

Finally in division 1 Flimby drew 3-3 at home against 7 a side handicap champions Seaton Legion to almost secure their division 1 survival. Legion's Mark Tatton top scored with 28.

Round 26 matches – 10th April 2013

Division 1 tightens further

The Window Outlet Cockermouth and District Snooker league top division looks to be going down to the wire as second placed John Street closed the gap by a further point to just one adrift from leaders Workington Cons with a 6-0 win over Seaton Legion.

With only two games left and Cons and John Street still to face each other the division 1 title could potentially go down to the very last frame of the season.

In the game between Workington’s John Street and Seaton Legion a series of close frame defeats didn’t do anything to easy the Legion pain with Mark Tunstall and captain Stephen O’Hagan top scoring in the match for John Street with a brace of 25 breaks.

Senhouse B’s 5-1 away defeat at the hands of current champions Workington Cons sends the fellow Workington side back down to life in division 2 to contend a title they incidentally won last season. Cons captains Ryan Adams made the only notable contribution of the match, a break 26 in his victory over fellow captain David Bracken.

A 3-3 home draw for Flimby against Station Road C lifted them out of the bottom two as Senhouse A went down 5-1 at home to Keswick’s Derwent Club 5-1.

The Flimby draw proved to be a highly entertaining encounter as a re-spotted black win for Station C captain Kevin Basnett, after his opponent Paul Vickers had made a 30 break, started the contest off nicely. Two breaks of 45, one from Flimby captain Geoff Banton and the other from team mate Mike Walker displayed Flimby’s quality, something they may rely on in the coming weeks.

With Senhouse Street A going down Derwent (top break of 30 from Derwent’s Paul Killingley) it’s now battle between them and Flimby who go down. Even though Flimby hold a one point advantage over the Workington side a superior win ratio for Senhouse A means should they finish the campaign on the same points as Flimby they would stay up via the aforementioned rule.

In division 2 a 4-2 defeat for challengers Maryport Social against Station Road A means that this now hands a massive advantage to leaders the United Club in the chase for the title.

At 2-1 down a frame winning break of 25 from Socials Paul Lister looked the likely tonic his side required to push for the win. However Station A’s Steven Cook countered with 31 to make it 3-2 and Station A captain Grant Porter dug deep to win the last for a pleasing home victory. This Station A win lifts them in second place but Social, who are now in third, still hold a game in hand.

Social result unknown to them at the time, the United Club capitalised on their challengers slip up with a 5-1 win at wooden spoon placed Maryport Labour.

Workington Golf Club’s 6-0 away win over Aspatria’s Sun Inn almost guarantees them a top four playoff place. A fantastic achievement considering this is their first ever season in the league.

Workington Legion and Station Road B’s 3-3 draw kept the two teams’ in sixth and fifth respectively. With a gap to the top four and a similar gap to the bottom two Legion and Station B are now only likely to trade positions.

Round 25 matches – 3rd April 2013

Social boost div 2 chances

Maryport Social Club gave their Window Outlet Cockermouth and District Snooker league division 2 title chase a massive boost this week with a 4-2 home win over league leaders the United Club.

The Workington outfit still sit on top by six points from Station Road A in second and a further four in front of Social. This United lead is now very precarious as Maryport Social still have two games outstanding (therefore possible twelve points to play for) and the potential to overtake them.

Wins for Socials ‘big three’ John Fleming, Paul Lister and Andrew Henderson over United’s Clive Lister, Andrew Mitchelhill and Dave Chapman respectively proved to be the key in a closely fought contest.

Workington’s Station Road A failed to capitalise on United’s loss as they went down 4-2 away to fourth placed Workington Golf Club. The golfers produced some solid snooker to cement their chance of a playoff place and non more than handicap singles finalist Mark Cowan. A break of 41 was enough to keep him on top of the break aggregate table with team mate Ken Kirkwood also making a break of 28 in the final frame of the match.

Fifth placed Station Road B improved their points tally this week with a 5-1 home win over wooden spoon placed Maryport Labour. Maryport’s Cameron Stuart saved his team blushes in the last with a victory over Shaun Moore to avoid the whitewash.

Workington Legion and Aspatria’s Sun Inn positions in sixth and seventh remain unchanged as they fought out a 3-3 draw.

In division 1 Workington’s second placed John Street club closed the gap on league leaders Workington Cons to two points with a 4-2 away win against Station Road C. Station C’s Barry Collins and John Street captain Stephen O’Hagan produced the game of the night as a 32 break from Collins was countered with winning contribution of 38 by O’Hagan. Other breaks came from Station C captain Kevin Basnett (26) and John Street’s Mark Tunstall (27).

Workington’s Senhouse Street A’s 4-2 home win over Flimby lifted them out of the bottom two for the first time this season. This pushes their opponents into the relegation places all be it by just a point but with only three matches left Flimby are in a dangerous position.

Third placed Derwent made their home advantage count as they drew with current champions and league leaders Workington Cons 3-3. Leading 2-0, aided by a frame winning break of 30 from Ryan Ismay in the first, the Cons side looked good for the victory but in winning three out of the last four the Keswick side fully deserved the draw.

Finally, a 4-2 home against bottom placed Senhouse B almost guarantees Seaton Legion will be playing division 1 snooker next season. A great achievement considered what a difficult campaign it had been for the legionnaires last term.

The Handicap Singles final between John Streets Alan McLeod and Workington Golf Clubs Mark Cowan will be held on Tuesday 16th April at Workington’s Senhouse Street Club, 730pm start.

Also, the AMCOR Cumbria County Snooker Singles final between Seaton’s Kevin Basnett and Kendal’s Andy Milliard will be held on Thursday 18th April at Workington’s United Club, 730pm start.

Doubles final & Round 24 matches – 27th March 2013

O’Hagan brothers retain title

Workington roofing firm owner Leigh Musgrave has stepped in to sponsor the Window Outlet Cockermouth and District Snooker league doubles handicap title this season at the eleventh hour with John Street brothers Peter & Stephen O’Hagan (+10 h’cap) taking trophy courtesy of a 4-1 win over Flimby’s Mike Walker and Kevin Kirkham (+18).

Retaining a trophy they also won in 2008 the John Street duo added to their trebles win just a few weeks ago with their team still in the running for the division 1 title.

In the first frame an edgy affair went to the last two balls with the O’Hagan’s 12 behind with 13 just remaining. Hanging in it was Peter O’Hagan who had the first opportunity to wrap up the frame and in wasting no time he took pink and black to win 58-57.

Frame two started well for the Flimby pairing as they went 23-0 up but a 33 break from Peter O’Hagan soon redressed the balance. This did not deter Walker and Kirkham and with some steely play they went 20 points up with just the blue remaining. The O’Hagan’s tried hard to gain the snookers they required but in the end they could not stop the Flimby pair taking the frame 64-35.

Another close frame with the scoreline at 1-1 saw Kirkham and Walker 7 in front with just the green left however Peter O’Hagan delivered when the pressure was on with a 25 clearance to win 62-35.

Two smaller breaks one by Peter then another by Stephen left the O’Hagan brothers 30 in front as the last two reds stood in frame four. Not willing to give this strong position up the John Street duo powered home this advantage for a 80-34 victory.

Chances for both parings, particularly the Flimby side, seemed to go begging surprisingly easy in frame five. Nevertheless Peter O’Hagan upped his game in superb style and with an evening’s best break of 57 he cleared the table majestically to take the title 96-36 to the delight of the United Club crowd.

Thanks to Dave Chapman and Andrew Mitchelhill for officiating and to the United Club for providing a superb venue.

In the league John Street closed the gap on division 1 leaders Workington Cons to three points as they won 6-0 at home Workington’s Senhouse A.

Breaks of 40 and 25 from John Street’s Gavin Simpson was good enough to take care of the first and with 34 and 41 from team mates Alan McLeod and Peter O’Hagan respectively in games three and five the John Street side took a 5-0 lead. Frame six was left to John Street captain Stephen O’Hagan and as he won 76-1 over Senhouse A’s Manny Stalker with a 30 break to boot the whitewash was complete.

Workington Cons used their most experienced player to full effect against fifth placed Seaton Legion as a final frame win for Cons’ Alan Moore (28 break) guided his team to a 4-2 win in a tricky away fixture.

Flimby went down 4-2 to Keswick’s Derwent Club but not without a couple of star performances. Mike Walker produce the seasons fifth highest break of 61 in his defeat of lakeside captain John Thwaites and team mate Wayne Dustin took the last with a break of 27 to nick his frame against Derwent’s Steve Hodgson.

Lastly in division 1 Station Road C improved their position in the league slightly as a 5-1 win over Senhouse B took them to within 2 points of third placed Derwent. Top breaks on the night came from Station C’s Neil Henderson (30 break) and captain Kevin Basnett (38 break).

In division 2 Workington’s United Club still look good to take the title as they defeated sixth placed Station Road B 4-2. Richard Nelson made the only notable contribution of the contest, a break of 28 in his defeat of United Club’s Mike Dawson.

Now with two games in hand courtesy of this week’s postponement against Workington Golf Club Maryport Social sit twelve points behind the United Club with Station Road A staying in second after their 5-1 home win against Workington Legion. Station A’s Jordan Berwick top scored with a break of 25 in his opening frame win against Legion’s Sandy Smith.

Maryport Labour remain rooted to the bottom of the table even though they managed a 3-3 home draw again Aspatria’s Sun Inn. The Sun Inn side sit one place above Labour in seventh.

Round 23 matches – 20th March 2013

United heat up

Workington’s United Club continued to apply the heat in the chase for Window Outlet Cockermouth and District Snooker league division 2 title this week with a 5-1 away win over Aspatria’s, Sun Inn.

Sitting in top spot their promotion charge gathers pace as each week passes but in leading the league for almost the entire second half of the season the United outfit look like they will settle for nothing less than being crowned champions.

Even though the Sun Inn have had a tough debut season they continue to fight each week with Raymond Miller typifying this reserve in the second frame of the match as he defeated United’s Mark Johnston. The table toppers’ points were delivered by captain Dave Chapman, Willie Fearon, Clive Lister and in the evening’s most convincing victory by the new division 2 leading player, Andrew Michelhill.

Workington Legion’s unbeaten run stretched to five games this week as they defeated division 2 title hopefuls Workington Golf Club, 4-2. As impressive as the golfers have looked this season they have failed to get the better of the lower placed side in four meetings. The nights most significant win came from Legion captain Mark Lavin as his win over Mark Cowan knocked the golf club cueist off the top spot in the leading player averages. Legion’s Chris Hunter made the fixtures highest break of 31 in his win over Bryan Walker.

Last placed Maryport Labour won the first frame in their home fixture against Station Road A however as Station B’s Steven Cook won the second convincingly it gave his team the necessary momentum to run off the remaining four frames for a 5-1 win.

Station Road B versus Maryport Social was postponed.

In division 1, leaders Workington Cons swept aside top four placed Station Road C with a 5-1 home win. The Cons’ biggest win over the fellow Workington side in four meetings this season looks to have come at just the right time. With second placed John Street club winning their game in hand 5-1 over Seaton Legion but only managing a 4-2 over Flimby Social this week the Cons lead was effectively stretched to 4 points.

In the match between Cons and Station Road C, Ryan Adams (26 break) and Mike Park (25 break) both recorded frame winning contributions, nevertheless it was team mate Julian Plaza who made the highest of the night with 38 only to see him lose his frame against Station C captain Kevin Basnett with a 29 break to boot.

In John Street’s two wins Peter O’Hagan starred yet again with a 52 break in each of his frame wins over Seaton Legions Mark Tatton and Flimby’s Paul Vickers. These victories not only ensure O’Hagan keeps his top spot in the leading player averages but also apply pressure to break aggregate leader Kevin Basnett.

In the battle of the bottom two sides, Workington club rivals Senhouse A and Senhouse B fought toe to toe with the A side coming out on top 4-2. This result sees the A side climb out of the bottom two places for what has been the best part of season, with Flimby Social replacing them courtesy of their defeat by John Street.

Finally in division 1 Keswick’s Derwent club moved into third place on their own again with a 5-1 home victory over 7 a side handicap champions, Seaton Legion. The lakesiders Cumbria County Singles Semi Finalist, Lee Crookes top scored on the night with a break of 60 in his defeat of Seaton’s in-form Allan Stephenson.

Round 22 matches – 13th March 2013

John Street maintain hope

John Street Club gave themselves some hope winning the Window Outlet Cockermouth and District Snooker league division 1 this week with a 6-0 win over Keswick’s Derwent Club.

Nine points adrift from leaders Workington Cons, John Street’s game in hand against Seaton Legion could be key if they are to regain a title they last won in 2009.

Breaks of 30, 31 and 34 from Alan McLeod, Peter O’Hagan and Mark Tunstall respectively marked John Streets’ authority as thumping home win left the lakesiders shell shocked.

Workington Cons carved out a 4-2 home win against Senhouse Street A to record their fourth win in as many meetings this season over the fellow Workington outfit. The fifth frame of the night proved to be best as Cons’ Stuart Shepherd made a break of 26 only to see it topped with a frame winning contribution of 38 from Senhouse’s Michael Poole.

A 3-3 home draw for Workington’s Station Road C was good enough for them to join the Derwent Club in third place with opponents Seaton Legion keeping their spot in fifth. Station C’s Karl Newton top scored on the night with a break of 27 against Legion’s Mark Tatton.

Finally in the top division last placed Senhouse B recorded their first win of the season with just six games left as they defeated Flimby Social 4-2. With just six games left their charge may be too late but it Shaun Ayre who started the Senhouse B ball rolling with Steven Jackson, Neil Bower and David Bracken making up the rest of the points.

In division 2 Workington’s United Club moved into first place on their own as they defeated Station Road A by a surprising 6-0 scoreline. As disappointing as a result it was for the Station Road side they still maintain a fourth place playoff spot.

Workington Golf Club produced their own whitewash as they triumphed 6-0 over Wooden spoon placed Maryport Labour. A superb home win for the Golfers ensured they stayed in third five points behind leaders the United Club.

A 3-3 draw for Maryport Social against Workington Legion meant they slipped into second place three points adrift. The game produced the only recordable contribution of the week as Socials Paul Lister knocked in a break of 43 to win frame three against Daniel McMullen. The Legion sit in sixth.

The weeks’ last fixture ended in another 3-3 draw this time between Station Road B and Aspatria’s, Sun Inn. Home side Station B stay in fifth, with the Sun Inn also non-moving in seventh.

Trebles final and round 21 matches – 6th March 2013

John Street defend Trebles title.

Window Cockermouth and District Snooker League division 1 side John Street Club have defended their league Trebles handicap title with a 5-2 victory over fellow Workington side Station Road A.

The top division side made up of brothers Peter and Stephen O’Hagan including Mark Tunstall made few mistakes in the competitions reduced handicap six red format to take the title for the second year running against Station Road’s division 2 trio consisting of Mark Robertson, Mike Walker and John Teasdale.

Up first John Streets Tunstall (+9 handicap) settled quickly with Station A’s Robertson (+14) looking out of sorts. In the shortened format the frame moved through to the last red swiftly. An unlucky in-off from Robertson all but sealed his fate as this left Tunstall the chance to mop up with a 22 clearance to the blue for a 35-10 win.

Frame two saw the beginning of a successful evening for Station Roads Teasdale (+18) as with some fine potting and safety play he kept John Street’s Stephen O’Hagan (+10) out. As the colours remained Teasdale lead by 20 and in wasting no time he fashioned an opening to clear yellow to pink to level the match at 1-1 with a 48-7 victory.

John Streets Peter O’Hagan (Scr) made easy work of the third with Station A’s Mike Walker (+18) powerless against division 1’s current leading players’ superb potting. Taking only a point Walker spent most of his time in his chair as O’Hagan won 51-19.

In frame four John Street’s Stephen O’Hagan (+10) made amends of his second frame defeat by maximising the effects of Station Roads Walkers’ minimal table time in the previous frame. In three scoring visits the frame was soon over with O’Hagan claiming 52-13 victory.

At 3-1 to John Street the match was starting to slip away for Station Road A. However, another excellent performance from Station A’s player of the night John Teasdale (+18) limited John Street’s Tunstall to just one red as he trounced his opponent 43-1.

In the sixth Station A’s Robertson (+14) led 19-0 and although it was reduced to 25-13 with the colours remaining John Street’s Peter O’Hagan (Scr) was up against it. With a 3-3 scoreline looking to be the likely outcome O’Hagan dug out the contribution of the night with a clearance 33 to take the frame 46-25 and an important 4-2 match lead.

Up again Station A’s Mark Robertson (+14) had no time recover from his disappointment in frame six as he faced John Street’s Stephen O’Hagan (+10). With the effects obvious O’Hagan was in no mood for charity and in preventing his opponent from potting a single ball he took the frame and the title in tremendous style with a 45-4 victory.

In the league Workington Cons extended their lead at the top of division 1 by two points to eleven with a 5-1 home win over Flimby Social. With Wayne Dustin winning the first for Flimby things looked promising. However a frame winning break of 38 from Julian Plaza in the second started a Cons charge which ended in the last with another victorious contribution of 25 this time from team mate Mike Park.

The extension of gap at the top was largely due to John Streets surprising 3-3 home draw to bottom side Senhouse B. Again another first frame win for the lower placed side, this time facilitated by a break of 25 from Matthew Mifsud, gave Senhouse B the perfect start. Team mate Steven Jackson made it 2-0 for Senhouse B but with captain Stephen O’Hagan and Tony Elliott making breaks of 39 and 32 respectively in frames three and four for John Street the score was 2-2. Even though John Streets Peter O’Hagan ensured defeat was avoided in the next Senhouse B’s Shaun Ayre took the last to leave his team the happier of the two sides.

Senhouse A and Seaton Legions’ places in the league remained unchanged as 3-3 draw kept them in fifth and seventh respectively. Top scorer on the night was Legion’s Scott Messenger with 29 even though he went down to John Hodkin.

Finally in the top division Keswick’s Derwent Club stretched their lead to three over opponents Station Road C as a 5-1 home see them still in third.

In division 2 Maryport Social’s 6-0 home win over Aspatria’s Sun Inn and last week’s outright leaders United Clubs’ 3-3 draw against Workington Golf Club means the two sides now sit tied at the top on 79 points. The Golf Club remain in fourth on 74 points.

Station Road A’s 5-1 over fellow club side Station Road B keeps them in third but now they sit just a point behind the top two. Station B stay in fifth.

In the division’s remaining fixture of the week bottom side Maryport Labour shocked last week’s giant killers Workington Legion as they held them to a 3-3 home draw. Labour remain at the bottom with the Legion in sixth.

Round 20 matches – 27th February 2013

United lead dented

Workington’s Station Road A and Maryport Social have closed the gap on league leaders the United Club to three points in the Window Outlet Cockermouth and District Snooker League division 2 this week.

As top team the United Club went down 4-2 away to fellow townies Workington Legion, Station Road A capitalised via a 4-2 win against second bottom Aspatria’s, Sun Inn. Maryport Social in third last week joined Station A in second place with a 5-1 derby win over last placed Maryport Labour.

In the match between the United Club and Workington Legion a first frame win for Sandy Smith put the legion one up but as Mike Dawson made a break of 28 in frame two for the United Club the match was level. With the next two frames shared frame five was crucial with both teams pushing for a win. A break of 25 from United’s Andrew Mitchelhill looked likely to gain that match advantage but with Workington Legion teenager Hayden Mostyn replying with a winning contribution of 33 his team moved 3-2 ahead. In the last Legion captain Mark Lavin started well and in failing to give up his lead he presided over Mark Suitor for an impressive match victory.

The Sun Inn started and finished their game well against Station Road A’s as Tommy Mattinson and Gary Miller won the first and the last, however with the damage done by Station A’s Mike Walker, John Teasdale, Keith Telford (27 break) and Steven Cook in frames two through to five the victory was guaranteed.

Maryport Social proved to be the divisions biggest winners of the week with their game being highlighted with a contribution of 32 in frame two from Social’s Craig Stuart in his victory over Maryport’s Labours Ken Wilson.

The final game in division 2 ended in a 3-3 draw between fourth and fifth placed Workington Golf Club and Station Road B. The stalemate was not without excitement as from 3-0 down the Golfers brushed aside Station B’s hopes of an easy home win with a superb comeback. Golf club’s Mark Cowan starred again as with a break of 27 in frame five he not only retained his divisional break aggregate lead but he also moved back to the top of the leading player averages.

In division 1 top team Workington Cons won the battle against second placed John Streetas a 4-2 away win extended their lead to 9 points, however the fellow Workington side do still hold a game in hand.

A break of 26 from Cons’ Julian Plaza allowed his team to draw level in frame two and with team mate Andrew Sharp ending Peter O’Hagan’s 18 week unbeaten run in frame three a 2-1 Cons lead was gained. Frame four produced the weeks best break of 62 from Cons’ Mike Park as he defeated Mark Tunstall comfortably. John Street super sub Tony Elliott took out Cons captain Ryan Adams in the next to give some hope of a draw, but as Cons former county champion Alan Moore made a break of 28 in the last to defeat John Street captain Stephen O’Hagan an important match victory was achieved.

Station Road C delivered the weeks only whitewash with a 6-0 win against relegation placed Senhouse A. The fourth placed side continue to improve as the season moves into its final phase with Steve Garroway finishing off the victory nicely with a stylish break of 30 in the last.

Keswick’s Derwent Club appear to have put their mid season blip to bed with their third victory in as many weeks. A 5-1 away win for the lakesiders keeps them in third place nevertheless opponents Senhouse B require a mammoth effort to avoid relegation as they now sit as the only team in either division without a win.

At 1-0 a frame winning contribution of 25 from Flimby’s Mike Walker allowed the sixth placed side to pull level against fifth placed Seaton Legion. This however all proved to be in vane as further victories from Allan Stephenson, Mark Tatton and Alan Cannan allowed the Legion to record a 4-2 win.

Round 19 matches – 20th February 2013

United Club stretch lead

Workington’s United Club stretched their lead at the top of division 2 in the Window Outlet Cockermouth and District Snooker this week with a 4-2 home win at the expense of bottom club Maryport Labour.

With Maryport Social going down in a shock 6-0 home defeat to Workington’s Station Road A the United Club now hold a five point lead over Station A who creep into second on the back of their excellent victory.

The United Club opened un an unassailable 4-0 lead with some steady performances from Mark Suitor, Mike Dawson, captain Dave Chapman and Andrew Mitchelhill however Maryport captain Steven Armstrong stopped the rot in frame five with a victory over Clive Lister and with Ryan Armstrong up to the job in the last he doubled Labour’s points tally with a win over Tony Hindmoor.

Even though Maryport Social were whitewashed they can probably count themselves unfortunate as a string of close frame finishes all went unrewarded. Seven a side finalist’s Station A took full advantage of this as John Teasdale, Mark Robertson, Mike Walker, Keith Telford, Steve Cook and captain Grant Porter all won to move the Workington side into one of the two promotional spots.

Workington Legion dented Station Road B’s chances of a top four playoff spot with a 5-1 away win. Legion are proving to be somewhat of a bogey side for their higher placed opponents as in three meetings between the two sides this season Station B are yet to record a victory.

Workington Golf Club versus Aspatria’s Sun Inn was postponed.

In division 1 Workington Cons made the most of John Street's postponed match against Seaton Legion to stretch their lead at the top to seven points with a 6-0 away victory over Senhouse B.

A 25 break from Cons’ Stuart Shepherd took care of the first against Senhouse B’s Shaun Ayre and with Ryan Ismay, captain Ryan Adams, Alan Moore, Julian Plaza and Andrew Sharp also proving victorious Cons took maximum points.

Workington’s Station Road C continue to improve as they defeated Flimby Social 5-1 at home. A thumping win for Paul Graham in the first frame over Flimby’s Wayne King set the victory up nicely but it was Station C captain Kevin Basnett who sealed the win in the fifth with an initial break of 38 and finished off superbly with a week’s best 74 clearance against Paul Vickers.

Finally in division 1 Keswick’s Derwent Club kept their third place in the league with a convincing 5-1 home win over Workington’s Senhouse A. The best of the match came from Derwent’s Chris D’Leny and Paul Killingley with breaks of 29 and 33 respectively.

7 A Side H’cap Final & Round 18 matches – 12th/13th February 2013

Seaton win cup.

Division 1’s Seaton Legion are the new 7 a side Window Outlet Cockermouth and District Snooker League Handicap Champions. An epic tussle against division 2’s Station Road A ended on the final ball as the legionnaires took the title 4-3.

Exciting as the final proved to be it ended in unfortunate circumstances as a wafer thin cut black to the baulk pocket was missed all together by Station Road A teenager Jordan Berwick to allow Seaton’s Alan Cannan to take the frame and the title.

Frame one started with a break of 26 from Legion’s Scott Messenger (+26 handicap) however some fine potting Station A’s Mike Walker (+35 handicap) enabled him to pull the scores level. A further break of 24 from Messenger gave the Seaton cueist an important lead and with yellow to blue to follow he took the frame, 69-36.

Station A’s Grant Porter (+28) started the better of the two players in frame two as Seaton’s Paul Smith (+35) failed to capitalise on some good chances. Smith‘s fine safety play did keep the Legion player in the game but with Porter depositing the final green and brown he won the frame, 58-28.

At 1-1 Seaton’s Allan Stephenson made all the running  and barring two unlucky in-offs while potting a couple of blacks he would held a substantial lead. Holding on Station A’s Steve Cook was still in the game with the colours left and only after Stephenson potted blue and pink did the frame become out of his reach as the legionnaire was victorious, 56-44.

Frame four proved to be a struggle for Legion’s Paul Mostyn (+27) as the handicap advantage for Station A’s Keith Telford (+43) seemed to produce many mistakes from the Seaton cueist. As the handicap lead was maintained up to the colours Telford grew in confidence and with yellow to pink deposited in three consecutive visits he took the frame 69-27 to pull the match level at 2-2.

The next frame was indeed the game of the night with Seaton’s Mark Tatton (+22) taking on Station A’s John Teasdale (+35). With a 35 point lead with just two reds left, Teasdale looked to have the frame in the bag. Making it even more difficult for the Legion player both reds had worked their way to the baulk end of the table. Undeterred by this, two great pots on the last two reds and a 16 break later Tatton was still in the frame. The yellow and green were traded but with 20 in the frame with 22 remaining Tatton needed all the balls. A good brown, followed by a great pot on the blue left Tatton in position on the pink. Even though the pink was near the corner pocket the black was 12 feet away tight on the bottom cushion. Taking the white round the angles off four cushions Tatton left the white in perfect position behind the black which he nervouslessly rolled in for a remarkable 63-61 victory.

Station Road A needed frame six if they were to stay in the match and with an early contribution of 24 Mark Robertson (+27) gave them the best possible start. Holding the handicap advantage Seaton’s Alan Evans (+41) was allowed to keep in touch and with one red left there was only nine in the frame. With the pressure increasing both players missed some easy shots but it was Robertson who held himself together the better of the two players and in picking off the balls he required he went onto win 61-39 to set up a decider.

In the final frame Station Road A’s Jordan Berwick (+35) and Seaton’s Alan Cannan both showed signs of nerves as some good opportunities went unrewarded. Berwick did manage to pot some good reds but as the colours eluded him Cannan kept in touch. Going into the last six balls Cannan potted yellow to blue in two visits to lead by three. Facing the pink Berwick put the pressure aside to deposit it to the corner to leave what looked like an obvious safety on the black. At this point maybe a little inexperience took over and in attempting to cut the black in he missed it all together to award the frame, 46-36 and inevitably the match to Seaton Legion in an unfortunate end to a great final.

In the weeks league fixtures division 1 threw up a couple of surprise results as the top two teams were both defeated at home. Leaders Workington Cons went down 4-2 to third placed Derwent and only after Mike Park and Alan Moore recorded breaks of 25 & 37 in the last two frames to recover from 4-0 down.

In the match between second placed John Street and fourth placed Station Road C another 4-2 win for the lower placed side was recorded. Highlights for the John Street side came from Peter O’Hagan with two breaks of 38 and Simon Frazer with a contribution 32 but the highest of the night (and the week) was delivered by Station Road C captain Kevin Basnett with a break of 69.

Also in division 1 Senhouse A captain George Davison made a frame winning break of 29 in the last to grab a battling 3-3 away draw against Flimby and Seaton Legion carried their cup form into their league match with Senhouse B as they presided 5-1 away.

In division 2 a 27 break from Maryport Social’s Andrew Henderson allowed his team to pull level at 2-2 in the joint top of the table clash against the United Club, however as United’s Mark Johnston won the next followed by a frame winning break of28 from team mate Clive Lister in the last, the United club established a two point lead at the top of the table.

Station Road A put aside their previous night’s disappointment to defeat Workington Golf 4-2 at home. The result sees the two teams swap places in the league as Station A now sit in third with the Golf Club now in fifth. Grant Porter top scored with 28 for Station A and Golf Club captain Kenny Kirkwood delivered their best with 25.

Finally, Maryport Labour were whitewashed for the seventh time this season as they went down 6-0 to Station Road B at home. Only a remarkable turnaround would enable them to escape the wooden spoon as they now stand 15 points adrift at the bottom of the table. Station B move into a share of third with their A team.

Round 17 matches – 7th February 2013

United open gap.

A pair of 4-2 wins for first and second placed Workington Cons and John Street Club ensured the top two spots in the Window Outlet Cockermouth and District Snooker League division 1 remained unchanged this week.

The top division leaders started their fixture against Seaton Legion in confident fashion as Ryan’s Ismay and Adams opened up a 2-0 lead for the Cons with victories over Scott Messenger and Mark Tatton. Frame three saw the most convincing performance of the week’s fixtures delivered by Cons’ Julian Plaza as breaks of 34 and 33 enabled him to defeat Legion’s Alan Cannan easily. Alan Stephenson and Paul Mostyn gave Seaton some hope of a draw as they won frames four and five but it was Cons’ leading light Alan Moore who claimed the match win with a victory over Legion captain Alan Evans in the last.

Workington’s John Street Club won the first frame in their away fixture against fellow townies Senhouse A with the aid of a 31 break from Alan McLeod but a win for Senhouse’s Tom Lawson in frame two ensured the scores were level. Untroubled, John Street moved through the gears to win the next three as Peter O’Hagan, Mark Tunstall and Captain Stephen O’Hagan ensured the victory at the expense of Senhouse A’s Manny Stalker, Michael Poole and Darren Wilkinson. Senhouse A captain George Davison did offer some consolation with a victory over Stuart Ryan in the last but his team still slip a league position into seventh.

The week’s remaining game in the first division allowed Flimby Social to climb a position into sixth even though they were on the wrong end of a 4-2 scoreline at Keswick’s Derwent Club. Derwent keep their third place in the league with Lee Crookes top scoring for the lakesiders in frame two with a break of 33. Flimby’s best came from Mike Walker with a contribution of 30 in the last to defeat Keswick’s Lee Bolton.

Station Road C versus Senhouse B was unfortunately postponed.

In division 2 Maryport Social rejoined the United club at the top of the table with an impressive 5-1 home win against Workington Golf Club. Craig Stuart, John Fleming (28 break), Paul Lister, Andrew Henderson & Paul Alford all won for Social with Golf Club captain Kenny Kirkwood averting the whitewash in the last frame of the night with a victory over Scott Lister. The Golf club stay in third.

Workington’s United Club scrapped out a 3-3 draw in their away fixture against Station Road B. In a match that went 1-1, 2-2 & eventually 3-3 both teams managed to hold their places in the table with the United Club staying in first and Station Road B hanging onto fifth.

Station Road A let slip at 2-0 lead in their away game against Workington Legion as the match ended in a 3-3 draw. Station Road A remain in line for a playoff place in fourth with Workington still in sixth.

The final fixture of the week produced a 5-1 home win for Aspatria’s Sun Inn over Maryport Labour Club. Highest break of the encounter went to Sun Inn’s Tommy Mattinson with a contribution of 25.

Round 16 matches – 30th January 2013

United open gap

Workington’s United Club opened up a two point gap at the top of Window Outlet Cockermouth and District Snooker League division 2 this week courtesy of a 5-1 home victory over Aspatria’s Sun Inn.

With two breaks of 33 United’s Andrew Mitchelhill took care of the first frame convincingly. This added to his already accumulated total 105 now puts him at the top of the division’s break aggregate table on 171. Frame two probably produced the division’s shock of the week as not having won a frame all season Matt Dance took out United’s Mike Dawson, who had incidentally only lost one frame all season. Not to be deterred, Dawson’s team mates quickly swept aside this minor setback and with wins from Clive Lister, Dave Chapman, Mark Johnston and Tony Hindmoor the United Club powered to victory. Sun Inn sit in seventh.

Maryport Social slipped into second place with a 3-3 home draw at the now fifth placed Station Road B. From 2-1 down the Maryport outfit got the better of the remaining three frames to end up the more satisfied of the two sides with Andrew Henderson delivering the best for them in frame five with a break of 30.

Workington’s Station Road A moved up one spot into fourth with a 6-0 white wash of wooden spoon placed Maryport Labour.

Finally in division 2 Workington Golf Club maintained their third position in the table with a 3-3 home draw against Workington Legion. The Golf Club’s Mark Cowan lost only his second game of the season in frame five against Legion captain Mark Lavin but still managed to maintain his top spot in the leading player stats on 86.7% (P15 W13).

In division 1 Workington Cons kept their top spot with a 3-3 draw at Station Road C. The outcome may have not altered their position in the table but at 3-0 in front they must surely have hoped for a better result. A break of 25 from Station C’s Paul Graham in frame four kick started the revival with a victorious Steve Garroway and finally Captain Kevin Basnett finishing off the job with a victory over fellow Captain Ryan Adams. John Street’s outstanding fixture against Keswick’s Derwent Club allows Cons hold a 6 point lead.

Seaton Legion still look contenders for the top 4 playoff’s with a third of the season to go as they defeated third placed Derwent Club 4-2. Legion’s Paul Mostyn opened up the match nicely with a break of 30 in the first but Derwent’s Lee Crookes managed to top that with 49 in last to give his team some consolation.

A first frame winning break of 25 from Simon Frazer, 44 in the second from Alan McLeod and 46 & 36 from Peter O’Hagan in the third enabled John Street to take a 3-0 lead against Flimby Social. Nevertheless as Flimby took two out of the next three highlighted with a winning contribution of 30 from Flimby’s Mike Walker in his victory over John Street Captain Stephen O’Hagan in the last, some solace in a 4-2 defeat was taken.

The final fixture of the week between the battle of the Senhouse teams ended in a 4-2 victory for the A side. The A team’s Tom Lawson produced the highlight of the match in the final frame of the contest as a break of 30 allowed him to defeat the B team’s Andy Aitken convincingly.

7 a side plate final and Round 15 matches – 23rd January 2013

Social land season first trophy

Division 2’s Maryport Social have become the new Window Outlet Cockermouth and District Snooker League 7 a Side Plate Handicap champions.

In the first final of the season the Maryport side came back from 3-2 down to defeat division 1’s Station Road C 4-3 in what turned out to be an enthralling encounter.

The match begun as Social’s Paul Lister (+20 handicap) took on Station Road C captain Kevin Basnett. A close fought frame never saw much separate the two players and with the pink and black remaining Basnett require both balls. Potting a relatively easy pink the Station C captain didn’t get the required position on black however a good safety shot yielded a half chance. Missing the long black Basnett’s fate was in the lap of the gods and in leaving the black over the pocket Lister duly obliged to take the frame 59-50.

In frame two Station C’s Neil Henderson (+26) was in first but a break of 22 helped Social’s Craig Stuart (+21) to gain a small advantage. At the crucial part of the frame Henderson turned on the style and with a nicely constructed break of 36 followed by a yellow to pink clearance he powered to a 82-24 victory.

Station Road C’s Steve Garroway (+20) and Maryport Social’s Colin Sealby (+43) started the next with many potted reds but as most of the colours ran safe both found it difficult to string a break together. A series of foul’s from the Social captain led to Garroway holding a slight lead with just the green left. The next four colours were shared and with an easy black remaining Sealby looked the likely winner, nevertheless an unexpected miss later Garroway was presented with a pot for the frame which he accepted greatly to win 63-57.

At 2-1 to Station C, Social’s Andrew Henderson (+24) got the better of the chances in frame four and with the colours remaining he led by 15 over Station C’s Barry Collins (+24). Both players made fouls but with Henderson potting green, brown and blue shortly followed by a foul on the pink by Collins the Social cueist took the frame 80-47.

Frame five saw Station C’s Karl Newton (+28) giving 21 points start away to Maryport’s Scott Lister (+49). Even though the Social cueist started with the handicap lead it was Newton who controlled the frame from beginning to end and with confident potting he took his team into a 3-2 lead with a 74-36 victory.

The penultimate frame started nervously for both Maryport’s Paul Alford (+47) and Station C’s Stephen Little (+23) with good chances for both players going unrewarded.  As the frame progressed Alford improved steadily and with some good reds and colours he established an important lead. Little tried hard to claw the deficit back but with some resilient play but Alford maintained lead his to win 61-21.

The decider was inevitably a cagey affair with some excellent safety play from both Station Road C’s Paul Graham (+13) and Maryport’s John Fleming (+15). A solid break of 22 from Graham put him 9 points in front but with Fleming potting the last red followed by blue, yellow and then the green he stood 4 points up. An extended safety exchange on the brown unlined the importance of the next pot with the remaining colours all available. Graham was the first to offer a slight chance as the brown didn’t reach the top cushion during a safety attempt. Taking his opportunity with thanks Fleming deposited brown, blue and pink to take the title with a 49-30 win.

In the league Workington Cons moved four points ahead in their quest to retain the division 1 title thanks to a 6-0 away victory over relegation placed Senhouse A.

With last week leaders, John Streets’ game against Keswick’s Derwent club postponed the Cons took full advantage to whitewash fellow Workington side in a game that surprisingly saw no breaks over 25 recorded.

Also in top division Flimby managed to hang onto their sixth spot with a 3-3 home draw against Senhouse B. Top break on the night came from Flimby’s Mike Walker as a contribution of 33 helped him to victory over Senhouse B captain David Petrie.

A break of 29 from Station Road C’s Craig Davies enabled him to win the first frame of his teams’ 5-1 away at Seaton Legion. An impressive victory for Station C against the 7’s TKO finalists (to be played on Tue 12th Feb vs Station Road A) quickly erased any memories from their previous nights’ final defeat to leapfrog their opponents into fourth.

In division 2 Workington’s United Club kept their place at the top of the table with a 4-2 victory at Workington’s Station Road A who stay in fifth. The United club remain on a roll but with a victory from a position of 2-0 down their result was all the more pleasing.

Maryport Social joined the United Club in first with a 5-1 win at Workington Legion. Maryport captain, Colin Sealby top scored with a break of 28 in the final frame of the night to round off a satisfying victory. The Legion sit in sixth.

Workington Golf Club recorded a 6-0 away win at wooden spoon placed Maryport Labour and now sit in third just two points behind the joint leaders. Golf club’s Mark Cowan hit the top break on the night with 25 to take him into the lead in the break aggregate table and  his victory also sees him in first place in the divisions leading player stats.

Finally Workington’s Station Road B moved up one place into fourth with a 4-2 away victory at Aspatria’s, Sun Inn. Station B’s Mike Middlehurst made a contribution of 25 to win the third frame but the second frame ended in bizarre circumstances. Aspatria’s Tommy Mattinson recorded highest break of the night as he cleared with 33 but due to a miscalculation of the scores he ended up losing by a point to Station B captain, Richard Nelson.

Round 14 matches – 16th January 2013

Cons stay top

Workington Cons kept their place at the top of Window Outlet Cockermouth and District Snooker league division 1 this week with a 4-2 away win over Flimby Social.

A break of 36 in frame one from Cons’ Ryan Ismay was enough for him to overcome the challenge of Flimby captain, Geoff Banton but with a solid performance from Paul Vickers in the second against Cons’ Ryan Barker the score was 1-1. A low scoring third game saw Cons’ Julian Plaza take the match lead as he defeated Ian Tinnion however Flimby tied the match up again as Mike Walker took out Cons’ Mike Park with ease. Frame five delivered a Cons match lead for the third time with captain Ryan Adams grinding out a win against Dave Teasdale. Looking for the win at 3-2 up Cons couldn’t have had a more experienced player to call on as Alan Moore took the table. Flimby’s Martyn Fisher  gave it his best but in failing to get out of double figures Moore coasted to a frame and match victory.

Workington’s John Street Club maintained their second place in division 1 with their own 4-2 away win over bottom placed Senhouse B. Simon Frazer’s break of 33 enabled the John Street cueist to take the first against Senhouse captain, David Petrie and Frazer’s team mate Tony Elliot doubled that advantage in the next with a victory over Shaun Ayre. David Bracken and Matthew Mifsud gave John Street food for thought in frames three and four as they defeated Alan McLeod and Mark Tunstall respectively to tie the match up at 2-2. John Street talisman Peter O’Hagan made sure of the match lead with a contribution of 40 to beat Neil Bower and despite a break of 25 from Senhouse B’s Andy Aitken in the last it was not enough for him to stop John Street captain, Stephen O’Hagan taking the match.

With the game between Keswick’s Derwent Club and Workington’s Station Road C postponed Seaton Legion’s 4-2 home win over Senhouse A allowed them to replace the Workington side in fourth place in the table. The first two frames were shared as Seaton’s Paul Mostyn and Senhouse B’s Darren Wilkinson were both victorious. Alan Ferris took the match lead in the next but again proceedings were levelled up as Legion’s Mark Tatton took frame four. A frame winning break of 39 from Legion’s Allan Stephenson in the next proved to be enough to spur team mate Alan Cannan on in the last as victory over Senhouse’s Manny Stalker allowed him to take the match.

In division 2 Maryport Social took advantage of Workington Golf Clubs’ 4-2 home defeat at the hands of league leaders the United Club to leapfrog them into second with a 5-1 away win at Aspatria’s Sun Inn.

A first frame win for Sun Inn’s Raymond Miller over division 2 leading player Paul Lister must have given the Aspatria side some hope of pulling off an important win. Nevertheless the Social side powered past any further challenge that was put in front of them and rounded off a superb win with a break of 33 from Andrew Henderson to move the Maryport side within a point of the league leaders.

Workington’s United Club shared the first four frames with their Golf Club adversaries in a match that looked likely to end in a draw, however with Mark Johnson and Andrew Mitchelhill winning the last two convincingly the United Club kept their place at the top.

Station Road A sit one place behind the Golf Club in fourth place with a 3-3 draw against Club rivals Station Road B. In another battle between two Workington sides the game ebbed and flowed in what turned out to be a deserving draw for both sides. The A team’s Jordan Berwick top scored on the night with a contribution of 25.

In the final match of division 2 Maryport Labour recorded a vital draw as they took three points from Workington Legion on the road. Workington Legion remain in sixth with Maryport Labour still propping up the table in eighth.

Round 13 matches – 9th January 2013

United pegged back

Workington Golf Club and Maryport Social closed the gap on division two leaders, the United Club, to two points in the Window Outlet Cockermouth and District Snooker league this week with a pair of 5-1 wins.

A home fixture for the golfers was capitalised on as they powered past early season leaders, Workington’s Station Road B. A victory for Station B captain, Richard Nelson, in the first must have left the lower placed side feeling confident. However as Mark Brasted, Bryan Walker, Andrew Wells and Phil Sorfleet all recorded wins the Golf Club they stood 4-1 to the good. The final frame of the evening produced the divisions most impressive victory of the week as Mark Cowen capped a fine win for golfers with breaks of 45 and 28 taking him into second place in the break aggregates and keeping him in the same spot in the divisions leading player stats.

Maryport Social on the other hand hit the ground running as they took the first four frames against fellow townies, Maryport Labour to assure their win. John Fleming, Paul Lister (who leads the breaks aggregates and the leading player averages), Scott Lister and Andrew Henderson all produced the goods for the Social outfit to take them to their unassailable position. Labour captain, Stephen Armstrong did manage to stop the rot in frame five but with Social captain, Colin Sealby claiming the last the victory was galvanised.

Division 2 leaders the United Club brought Workington Legion down from their 6-0 win over Station Road B last week with a 4-2 home victory. Moving into a 3-0 lead the United club were guaranteed to be in at least a share of the league’s top spot but with Eric McMullen taking the next he gave the Legion side some hope. Andrew Mitchelhill made sure of the match win with a superb break of 48 to take frame five which not only proved to be the highest of the week but of the season so far. Legion captain, Mark Lavin did inject some respectability into the score line with an impressive win in the last to keep his team in sixth place.

In division 2’s final fixture Station Road A moved above club rivals Station Road B into fourth place with a 4-2 home victory over Aspatria’s Sun Inn, who incidentally remain in seventh.

In the first division Workington Cons swapped places with John Street Club at the top of the table as they defeated their town rivals 4-2. A decisive home win for the Cons side started in confident fashion as they took the opening three frames highlighted with a break of 26 from Cons’ Ryan Ismay in frame two. The next two were shared to move Cons’ into a 4-1 lead and despite a break of 32 from Cons’ Mike Park in the last Peter O’Hagan nicked the frame for what could be a very important point.

Keswick’s Derwent Club still sit in third place courtesy of a 5-1 home win over Workington’s last placed Senhouse B. Taking the first five frames, supported with a highest break of 27 from Paul Killingley in the second, a white wash looked on the cards for the lakesiders. Nevertheless it was Senhouse’s Andy Aitken who averted his teams’ blushes with a victory over Mark Forsyth in the last.

Senhouse A produced their first win since the beginning of December as they defeated fourth placed Station Road C 4-2. A solid home victory for the Senhouse side was ensured as Alan Ferris, Geoff Anderson, Manny Stalker and Michael Poole all won but it was Station C captain, Kevin Basnett who stopped the charge with a bang as with breaks of 40 and 27 he prevailed 88-1. With still a point to play for team mate Neil Henderson took no prisoners in last as he defeated Senhouse A captain, George Davison, convincingly to put some respectability into the scoreline.

Lastly in division 1 Flimby recorded their first win since the end of October with a 4-2 home victory over Seaton Legion. Another 4-0 lead ensured Flimby of the victory but it was Mark Tatton and Alan Cannan who won the last two and keep the Legion one place ahead of Flimby side in the table.

Round 12 matches – 2nd January 2013

John Street go top

Workington’s John Street Club became sole division 1 leaders at the top of the Window Outlet Cockermouth and District Snooker league after a 5-1 home win against Seaton Legion this week.

A win from Simon Frazer in the first coupled with a break of 27 from team mate Alan McLeod in the second ensured John Street took the first two frames. Mark Tunstall made it three for the Workington Outfit however Allan Stephenson stopped the rot for the legionairres in frame four with a win over Stuart Ryan to reduce the deficit. Peter O’Hagan continued his great form as he powered past Seaton’s Alan Evans in the next with breaks of 63 & 31 to make it 4-1. The last saw Legion’s Mark Tatton make a break of 29 but with John Street captain, Stephen O’Hagan replying with a contribution of 25 he capped a fine table topping victory.

Workington Cons slipped into second by just the odd point on the back of a 4-2 home win over relegation placed Senhouse B. A black ball win for Cons’ Ryan Ismay in frame one was cancelled out with superb performance from David Petrie in the second to make it 1-1. Senhouse’s David Bracken equalled his team mates performance in the third with a victory over Julian Plaza to take the lead. At this point in the match something seemed to click in the Cons side as what could have been viewed as a precarious position was quickly dismissed as Stuart Shepherd, Ryan Adams and Alan Moore all won in an impressive turnaround.

Also in division 1 fourth placed Station Road C, starring down the barrel of defeat at 3-0 down to sixth placed Flimby, made a remarkable comeback to draw 3-3. Paul Vickers, Mike Walker and Ian Tinnion produced the wins to take Flimby to the edge of victory. Nevertheless it was Neil Henderson, Karl Newton and captain Kevin Basnett (28 & 35 breaks) who refused to give in and complete the draw.

Finally in the top division Keswick’s Derwent Club maintained third place with a solid 4-2 away victory over Senhouse A.

In division 2 a 6-0 home victory for Workington’s United Club took them to the top of the table. 31 break for Dawson in the first.

Round 11 matches – 17th December 2012

Station Road B stay top

Workington’s Station Road B kept their place at the top of the Window Outlet Cockermouth & District Snooker League division 2 with a 5-1 home win against Maryport Labour.

Victories for Gary Mattinson, Richard Nelson (Capt.), Mike Middlehurst, Paul Hoad and Luke Naylor took the score to 5-0 for Station Road B, however Maryport Labour Captain Steven Armstrong managed to avert the white wash with win in last against Barry Graham.

The United Club held on to their tie for second courtesy of a 3-3 away draw with fifth placed Maryport Social. The scoreline nevertheless hides the story of an amazing comeback started by a player that is fast becoming the Workington outfit’s talisman in United captain, Dave Chapman. At 3-0 down a 31 break from Chapman looked good to take the frame but in digging deep Socials John Fleming took the game all the way to the final pink. An unfortunate miss left Chapman in and with coolness personified he took the final two balls to take the frame. Inspired by this Mike Dawson made it 3-2 with a win against Maryport’s Colin Sealby and to complete the comeback yet another black ball victory was required but it was Andrew Mitchelhill who defeated Scott Lister for the shock turnaround.

Workington Legion and Aspatria’s Sun Inn’s positions in division 2 remain unchanged in sixth and seventh respectively as they drew 3-3. A home fixture for the Legion side saw them 2-0 down but in winning the next three to lead 3-2 they were pushing for a win. Aspatria’s Gary Miller halted the charge nevertheless to tie up the match with a victory over Legion’s Chris Hunter.

Finally in division 2 Station Road A kept their place tied for second alongside the United Club with a 3-3 away draw against Workington Golf Club who incidentally remain in fourth.

In division 1 Workington Cons pulled off the most shocking result of the week as they defeated Keswick’s Derwent Club 6-0. A home win for the Workington side probably would have been classed a good victory but to whitewash the league leaders, give their current form, has certainly made a difference to the table. Cons now stand five points above the lakesiders who sit in third. The highest contribution of the night went to Cons’ Alan Moore as with a break of 25 he defeated Derwent’s Paul Killingley in the last.

John Street gave up their share of the top spot and now sit in second with a 5-1 away victory over Station Road C. A confident away victory for the John Street side was underlined in the third frame as Simon Frazer presided over Station Road C Captain Kevin Basnett with a 28 break to boot.

Seaton Legion moved above Station Road C into fourth place with a 6-0 home win against bottom side Senhouse B. A close first frame win that saw Seaton’s Scott Mesenger beat Matthew Mifsud set the tone for the night as the legionnaires powered to their first whitewash of the season.

Flimby against Senhouse A was unfortunately postponed.

Round 10 matches – 12th December 2012

Three become two

Last weeks three way tie at the top of the Window Outlet Cockermouth and District Snooker league division 1 was reduced to two as Keswick’s Derwent club and Workington’s John Street Club’s 5-1 wins could not be matched by current champions Workington Cons.

Even though the Cons side slip into third spot it is by the slenderest of margins as a 4-2 away win over Seaton Legion leaves them just a point behind. An intriguing match saw the first two frames shared with Mike Park winning for the Cons and Allan Stephenson levelling for Seaton. Frame three put the title holders in front again with a victory from Ryan Barker and as Cons captain Ryan Adams made a frame winning break of 27 in the next they moved 3-1 ahead. Cons stalwart Julian Plaza produced his highest break of the season so far in frame four with a superbly constructed contribution of 50 to take it to 4-1. The last however produced the shock of the night and indeed the week as Seaton’s Alan Cannan grafted hard to defeat Cons’ 2010 County champion, with room to spare, and inject some respectability into the score at 4-2.

Keswick’s Derwent Club stretched their unbeaten run to eight games with a 5-1 away victory over Flimby Social. The lakeside outfit are putting further evidence together for their title claim as week passes. Flimby however are moving towards other end of the table as just one point out of their last two games puts them in one of the two relegation places, tied in seventh.

Workington’s John Street Club’s 5-1 home win against fellow townies Senhouse A proved to be as good for the league leaders as bad as it was for the relegation placed side. At 2-0 to the John Street side a 32 break from Simon Frazer looked to make it 3-0, nevertheless Senhouse’s Alan Ferris had other plans and with a black ball win he pulled it back to 2-1. Frame four was chalked off as John Street powerhouse, Peter O’Hagan produced breaks of 28 and 26 to defeat battling Senhouse A captain George Davison. In the next another close affair fell to John Street's Stephen Buchanan with captain Stephen O’Hagan rounding up the proceedings in the last with a comprehensive victory over Senhouse A’s Tom Lawson.

Finally in division 1, Station Road C maintained their top four playoff spot with a 4-2 away win against bottom placed Senhouse B. In a game that surprisingly saw no recordable contributions Station C moved 2-0 up with wins from Paul Graham and Kevin Basnett only to see them pegged back as Senhouse B’s Mike Mifsud and David Bracken. Station Road C super sub Stephen Little won an important fifth frame with team mate Steve Garroway finishing off the job in the last.

In the second tier the top two teams clashed with Station Road B holding onto their one point lead with a 3-3 draw against fellow Workingtonians, the United Club. A makeable black in the first went begging for the United Club’s Tony Hindmoor to let Station Road B captain, Richard Nelson in for the win. Mike Middlehurst won the next for Station Road B to go 2-0 but with Mike Dawson in confident mood he took the third to pull one back. Paul Hoad made it 3-1 to Station Road B to leave the table topping side in control but with United’s Mark Suitor and captain Dave Chapman winning the last two an honourable draw was achieved.

Workington Golf Club continue to impress as they defeated the current 7 a side handicap KO champions Maryport Social 4-2. A 27 break by Socials Paul Lister looked to be enough for frame one but with Mark Cowan untroubled by his opponents potting prowess he took the game. Victories in the next three frames for Mark Brastead, Phil Sorfleet and Kenny Kirkwood saw the golf club side take an unassailable 4-0 lead. Damage limitation now being the main focus for the Maryport outfit worked in their favour as Andrew Henderson and captain Colin Sealby took the last two.

Station Road A took advantage of Maryport Social’s defeat to join them in third spot with a 4-2 home win over Workington Legion. A frame winning break of 30 from Station A captain Grant Porter in the first and a victory for team mate Mike Walker in the second proved to be the key to their victory. Workington Legion remain in sixth.

The final match of division 2 saw Maryport Labour record their first win of the season with a 4-2 home victory over Aspatria’s Sun Inn. A confidence boosting result for the Maryport team still sees them with a fight on their hands as they sit at the foot of the table with the Sun Inn side just one place above.

Round 9 matches – 5th December 2012

Station Road A join race for the top

Workington’s Station Road A tightened up the title race Window Outlet Cockermouth and District Snooker league division 2 this week with a 6-0 thrashing of Maryport Labour.

Even though the victorious Station Road outfit sit in fourth place their away win sees just three points separating the top five teams. Even at this early stage in the season Maryport Labour have tough battle if they have any aspirations of making a top 4 playoff spot. The contest was highlighted with a break of 27 in the first from Station Road A's Mike Walker in his defeat of Paul Nixon. This spring board proved to be the inspiration needed for what ultimately ended a one sided contest.

Also in division two Station Road Club’s B team maintained their top spot with a 4-2 home win against Maryport Social. With the score at 1-1 and a break of 27 from Andrew Henderson to the good Maryport Social looked to be seizing an important away advantage. Nevertheless Paul Hoad stood fast and in nullifying the contribution to win on the colours this proved to be the fillip his team needed to take a table topping victory.

The United Club travelled from Workington to Aspatria’s Sun Inn and even though they were pushed hard a 4-2 win kept them in second spot. From 2-1 down the United Club upped their game, first with a win from Mark Suitor, quickly followed by comprehensive victory from Andrew Mitchelhill and finally rounded off with a gritty colours clearance from captain, Dave Chapman.

Workington Legion upset the form book to preside over Workington Golf club, 4-2 but a split in the table keep them in sixth. A good win for the legion outfit displayed their battling qualities to the max with Chris Hunter, Sandy Smith, Hayden Mostyn & Mark Lavin taking the points for the lower placed side.

In division 1 a 6-0 win for Workington’s John Street Club over Flimby Social allowed them to move to the top of the table in what is now a three way tie with Workington Cons and Keswick’s Derwent Club. At 2-0, John Street’s Simon Frazer soon made it 3-0 with a frame winning contribution of 39 and with a fine pot on the black from team mate Steve Buchanan (25 break) the score moved to 4-0. A brilliant 71 break from Workington Cons’ Ryan Adams in frame five helped his team claim a 4-2 home win over fourth placed Station Road C. Other contributions included a 27 break for Station C's Paul Graham, albeit in a defeat by Ryan Ismay and 32 break for Cons' two time County Champion Alan Moore.

The Derwent Club sustained their excellent form with a 5-1 home win over Seaton Legion to keep their place at the top. Derwent’s increasingly consistent performances proved they are ready to face any challenge put before them. An easy win for Paul Killingley in the first followed by an equally commanding victory for Vince Peet (27 break) in the second put the lakesiders 2-0 up. Seaton's Alan Evans halted the charge in frame three with a win over Keswick captain John Thwaites but the onslaught was soon resumed as Andrew Austin, Mark Forsyth (30 break) and Lee Bolton took the last three frames for an impressive match win.

Finally in division 1, derby battle between Workington’s two Senhouse teams ended in the A side opening up a two point gap over the now bottom placed B side with a 4-2 win. Geoff Anderson used all his experience to pip B team star player Shaun Ayre in the first with Alan Ferris adding to the score in the second with a victory over Andy Aitken. Frame three looked to be the turning point as a break of 27 from the A team's Michael Poole was turned over by a determined Neil Bower. This however proved to have the opposite effect as the A team's Tom Lawson and Darren Wilkinson soon made it 4-1. Some respectability was injected in the scoreline nevertheless as the B team's David Bracken pinched the last against A team captain George Davison.

Round 8 matches – 28th November 2012

Also in the second tier Maryport Social maintained their fine run of form as a 4-2 home win against Workington Legion win kept them without a loss since they were defeated by their opponents in the first game of the season. The first two frames were shared as Phil Sorfleet won for the Golf Club and Tony Hindmoor won for the United Club. Composure was resumed in the next as Mike Dawson proved that he still holds a formidable game to score over one hundred points, with a 32 break to boot, in beating the Golf Club’s Andrew Wells. Clive Lister produced the evenings most one sided frame as in restricting Gary Robinson to just seven points he took the match score to 3-0. Even though a number of good opportunities passed United’s Andrew Mitchelhill by he still did enough to overcome Legion’s Lee McTiffin without difficulty. A close fourth frame was decided by the inclusion of a break of 28 from three time former County Champion Mike Dawson, as he presided over Legion captain Mark Lavin. At 5-0 to the United Club a whitewash was on the cards, however Legion’s Eric McMullen showed tremendous fight and in taking the last five colours he nicked the frame to leave Tony Hindmoor the only United casualty.

Maryport Social maintained their third place in division 2 with a 5-1 win against bottom of the table Maryport Labour. The derby encounter saw Labour’s Keith Anderson take the first frame but with a break of 26 proving enough for Socials Paul Lister to take the second it gave his team the confidence they needed to power to a commanding away win.

Second placed Station Road B were held to a 3-3 draw against division 2 surprise package Workington Golf Club. In a match that ebbed and flowed a last frame win for Station B’s Graeme Renney ensured that they remain as the only side in either division still unbeaten.

Workington’s Station Road A kept their fourth place in the table with a 5-1 away victory against Aspatria’s Sun Inn. A black ball win for Station A captain Grant Porter gave his team a welcome first frame boost and with his team going from strength to strength only Aspatria’s Gary Miller could offer any resistance as he took the fourth frame against Mark Robertson.

In division 1 Keswick’s Derwent Club continued with their finest start to the season for many a year with a 4-2 away win against Workington’s Senhouse B. With the first two frames shared the encounter looked to be heading for a close finish but in winning three of the next four Keswick now head the table in joint first place.

Derwent’s partners at the top of the division, Workington’s John Street Club were held at home 3-3 by current champions Workington Cons. The Cons team still sit ominously placed in third just a point behind the top two. Highlight of the match went to John Street’s Mark Tunstall as with a week’s highest break of 50 in frame four he effortlessly disposed of Cons’ Julian Plaza.

A 4-2 home victory for fifth placed Seaton Legion against fourth place Flimby Social proved that last week’s win against John Street was no fluke. Their second win in as many weeks against higher placed opposition could see them as a difficult team to break down at home. Flimby captain Geoff Banton was the only player to produce a recordable contribution as a break of 29 allowed him to take the third frame against Seaton’s Paul Smith.

Lastly in division 1, Station Road C finally got off to winning ways with a 4-2 home victory over Senhouse A. At 2-2 the game was finely balanced but with Station C captain making breaks of 27 & 29 to win frame five and team mate Steve Garroway equally impressively in closing out his game in the last the Station Road C team took the spoils.

Round 5 matches – 31st October 2012

Seaton shock leaders

Seaton Legion produced the shock of the round in the Window Outlet Cockermouth and District Snooker league this week with a 4-2 home win against division 1 league leaders John Street Club.

Scott Messenger started the ball rolling for the legionnaires as he defeated John Street captain Stephen O’Hagan in the first, however as O’Hagan’s team mate Tony Elliott made a break of 28 in the second a 1-1 scoreline looked on the cards. Digging deep Seaton’s Paul Mostyn obviously had other ideas and a 67-50 victory took his team to 2-0. Workington’s Peter O’Hagan won the match’s most convincing frame in the next and with breaks of 31, 31 & 35 against legions Paul Smith he pulled one back. Stephen Buchanan tied it up for John Street at 2-2 with a fairly comfortable win over Mark Tatton but with Seaton’s two Alan’s, Cannan and Evans winning the last two frames against Alan McLeod and Mark Tunstall a fantastic win was complete.

An equally surprising win also came for Flimby Social Club as they defeated Workington’s Station Road C, 4-2 away.  Victories for Martyn Fisher and Kevin Kirkham took care of the first two frames for Flimby but Station Road C captain, Kevin Basnett pulled one back in emphatic style. Making the season’s highest break of 95 wasn’t enough as in missing the next red Flimby’s Mike Walker handed Basnett another chance and with a clearance of 42 he created a league record by winning 137-0. The Station Road confidence was short lived as Flimby’s Dave Teasdale and Paul Vickers won the next two for a 4-1 Flimby lead. In the last Flimby captain, Geoff Banton pushed Steve Garroway hard but with a superb break of 27 from the Station Road C cueist he induced respectability into the scoreline at 2-4.

Derwent new boy Lee Crookes managed a frame winning break of 29 in frame two in his teams 4-2 home victory over Senhouse A. The lakesiders now sit in joint second place with Workington Cons on 18 pts.

Second placed Workington Cons defeated Senhouse B 4-2 away in the final fixture in division 1. At 2-2 the match looked to go either way but with wins for Mike Park and two time County Champion Alan Moore, Cons powered their way to victory.

In division 2 Maryport Social took a 2-0 lead aided by a frame winning break of 28 from Paul Lister. However with Mike Walker and Mark Robertson winning the next two for Station Road A the match was tied at 2-2. A gritty win for Social Andrew Henderson in frame five looked to be the turning point but with Station Road A captain, Grant Porter showing his class in the last parity was reached at 3-3.

With Workington Golf Club vs Sun Inn and Station Road B vs Workington Legion postponed the final match in division 2 this week saw Workington’s United Club take the lead at the top of the table with a 4-2 home win against Maryport Labour. A confident win for the United Club outfit was only blemished with a victory for Maryport captain Stephen Armstrong over United’s Mark Johnson.

Round 4 matches – 24th October 2012

Leaders look strong

Workington’s Station Road B extended their division 2 lead to four points in the Window Outlet Cockermouth and District Snooker league this week with a 5-1 away victory against Maryport Labour.

With the first two frames were shared a closer contest looked on the cards, however as Station B’s Barry Graham presided on the black against Keith Anderson in the next his team grew in confidence as each of the remaining frames were won.

Workington Legion moved into joint second place with a 4-2 away win against Aspatria’s Sun Inn. A 2-1 advantage for the Legionnaires quickly turned into an unassailable 4-1 lead with wins for Sandy Smith and Chris Hunter. Some consolation was offered for the Sun Inn side in the last as Steven Miller won on the black against young Legion prospect Hayden Mostyn.

Also in the second tier Workington’s United Club managed to maintain their place in the table alongside now alongside Workington Legion with a 3-3 draw at home to Maryport Social. A relatively easy missed black by Social captain Colin Sealby handed the first frame to Mark Johnson and with United Club team mate Mike Dawson clearing the last four colours in the second in was soon 2-0. Nevertheless, Maryport came back with a vengeance and with three convincing frame wins for Andrew Henderson, Paul Alford and Paul Lister they moved 3-2 in front. A fairly tight final frame went back and forth but was in the end decided via a nerveless brown to black clearance from United’s Andrew Mitchelhill.

Finally in division 2 Workington Golf Club again proved they have not entered the league for just the ride as they defeated former division 1 side Station Road A 4-2 away. The most significant performance of the match and indeed of the division came in frame five as a break of 30 from Golf Club’s Mark Cowan not only top scored but currently sits as the leading break so far this season in the second tier.

In division 1 Flimby Social erased the memories of their 6-0 defeat to Keswick’s Derwent Club in their last league fixture with a 5-1 home win against Workington’s Senhouse Street A. Top scorers on the night were Flimby’s Mike Walker and captain Geoff Banton as they both added breaks of 25 to their aggregate totals in impressive frame wins.

The Derwent Club added to Workington Cons’ TKO misery from last week to turn over the current champions 4-2. An impressive away win for the lakesiders takes them into joint second place alongside their opponents. The only notable contribution of the evening came in frame six as Alan Moore produced a contribution of 28 to defeat Derwent’s Mark Forsyth.

Workington’s John Street club kept their spot at the top of the table but not without a struggle as they had to come back from 3-0 to draw 3-3 against a strong Station Road C side. The fourth frame between former county finalists in John Street’s Peter O’Hagan and Station Road C’s Kevin Basnett proved to be the frame of the season so far. A break of 25 from O’Hagan was followed with breaks of 24 and 30 from Basnett but in missing a long red the Station C captain had played his last shot as O’Hagan cleared with 49 to take the frame. John Street’s Stephen Buchanan recorded the only other notable contribution of the encounter as he made a break of 25 to defeat Station C’s Neil Henderson in the last.

In the final game of the week Senhouse B and Seaton Legion shared the spoils at 3-3 in a result that helped neither team as they both sit at the foot of the table in joint eighth place.

7-a-side handicap round 1 matches - 17th October 2012

Former Champions shocked

The Window Outlet Cockermouth and District Snooker league the 7-a-side handicap team KO cup got underway this week with Workington Golf Club producing the victory of the round as they defeated 2011 KO champions Workington Cons 4-1.

Using their handicap advantage to full effect the division 2 newcomers certainly shocked the current division 1 champions with nobody being more elated than Golf Club captain, Kenny Kirkwood.

In an equally impressive victory the team from the Sun Inn, Aspatria also flew the flag for the new boys as they defeated current TKO handicap champions Maryport Social, 4-2 away. At 2-2, aided by a frame winning break of 25 from John Fleming, the Maryport side must have fancied their chances, however Aspatria’s Steven Miller and Matt Dance had other ideas and won the last two frames to take them into the quarter finals.

The comeback of the week went to division 1’s John Street Club. The 2002, 2007 & 2008 champions trailed 3-0 against Workington’s United Club but undeterred the John street side clawed their way back slowly and in a late finish they eventually prevailed 4-3.

Workington’s Senhouse B took the final two frames of their first round encounter against fellow townies Station Road C to move into the next round with a 4-2 home win. Top scorer on the night (and of the round) was Station C’s Kevin Basnett with a break of 64 in his frame win over Simon Burns.

Beaten finalists in the last two seasons, Station Road A, breezed through to the last 8 with a 4-0 away win against Maryport Labour. Station Road A captain Grant Porter being the only player to be challenged as he required the last two balls to defeat fellow captain, Labour’s Stephen Armstrong.

Division 1’s Senhouse A moved into the last eight with a 4-2 victory over 2011 TKO plate runners up Workington Legion 4-2.

Finally, Flimby Social Club dragged themselves back from a 3-2 deficit to eventually win 4-3 in an enthralling encounter against Station Road B.

Round 3 – October 10th 2012

Derwent on fire

Keswick’s Derwent Club were on fire in the Window Outlet Cockermouth & District Snooker league this week as they recorded division 1’s first 6-0 win of the season against a despondent Flimby Social side. After losing their first two games of the season Derwent definitely weren’t going into the fixture with the greatest of confidence but with wins from Chris D’Leny, Vince Peet, Mark Forsyth, John Thwaites (Capt.), Carl Arthur & Andrew Austin they redressed the balance.

With league leaders John Street not in action this week (match postponed against Senhouse A) defending champions Workington Conservative club moved to the top of the division with a 5-1 home win against Seaton Legion. A high quality performance from the Cons side saw them in top form as, Ryan Ismay (27), Julian Plaza (40), Ryan Adams (36), Mike Park (32) & Alan Moore all delivered frame winning breaks.

Finally in the top division Workington’s Station Road C and Senhouse B battled out a 3-3 draw. A black ball win for both Senhouse’s Simon Burns and Station Road’s Paul Graham took care of frame three five respectively but it was frames three and six that produced the best snooker. In the third Station Road’s Kevin Basnett made the highest break of the evening (and the week) with a frame winning contribution of 59 but it in the last a 28 break from team mate Steve Garroway looked likely to take the match for the Station Road side. However, a quick fire break of 42 from Senhouse’s Shaun Ayre turned things around to tie up the proceedings.

In division 2 the two top teams met in week three with Workington’s Station Road B and the United Club facing each other. Both teams looked strong in their first two fixtures but with Station Road B fielding a slightly weakened side the United Club held the pre match advantage.  This psychological edge diminished quickly as Station Road B moved in an unassailable 4-0 lead. Nevertheless the United Club showed their fighting spirit with wins in the final two frames to pull the score back to 4-2.

Workington Legion look a different side to that of last term this season with yet another positive result, this time a 3-3 draw with 2011/12 division 1 side Station Road A. At 3-1 down the Legion looked down and out but with victories from Eric McMullen and Chris Hunter in the last two an impressive comeback was complete.

Maryport Social Paul Lister, John Fleming, Paul Alford, Andrew Henderson & Colin Sealby got their team off to winning ways this season with a 5-1 victory against Workington Golf Club.

In the last fixture of the second tier league newcomers The Sun Inn, Aspatria got their first win of the season on the board as they emphatically defeated Maryport Labour Club, 5-1.

Round 2 - 3rd October 2012

Station Road B show fight

Window Outlet Cockermouth and District division 2 side, Station Road B carved out a 3-3 draw with last season’s 7 a side TKO champions, Maryport Social Club this week but only after coming back from 3-0 down.

With a 6-0 win over league newcomers the Sun Inn, Aspatria in week 1, Workington’s Station Road B now sit at the top of the table. Leading 3-0 Maryport Social must have fancied their chances of kicking on for a home win, however after Station Road B captain Richard Nelson prevailed on the colours in frame four he gave his team some hope. A black ball win for Gary Mattinson in the fifth took it to 3-2 and with another colours win in the last for Nicky Dixon over Maryport captain Colin Sealby the fight back was complete.

Joining them at the top is the United Club who followed last weeks 4-2 win over Maryport Social with a 5-1 win against the Sun Inn. A frame winning break of 28 from United Club’s Andrew Mitchelhill allowed his team to take 4-0 lead and even though Aspatria’s Steven Miller stopped the rot with a win over Tony Hindmoor, Clive Lister finished the job for the United Club with a 27 break to defeat Chris Scott.

Other games in division 2 saw Station Road A get off to winning ways with a 5-1 victory over Maryport Labour Club. Breaks of 28 and 27 from Station Road A’s Grant Porter and Mark Robertson respectively underlined their dominance in a convincing display.

The final fixture of the division saw league debutants Workington Golf Club take a 1-0, 2-1 and 3-2 lead in their game against Workington Legion but it was captain Mark Lavin who finally pegged them back with a win in the battle of the captains as he prevailed over Kenny Kirkwood to tie the match at 3-3.

In division 1 John Street’s 5-1 over Flimby sees them as the only side in the division with two wins out of two. A game that surprisingly saw no contributions over 25 moved to 4-0 very quickly with little resistance from the Flimby outfit. However John Street’s week 1 break topping Peter O’Hagan saw a very different end to his frame this week as a fortunate black win over Flimby Captain Geoff Banton took it to 5-0. With a whitewash on the cards Flimby’s Wayne Dustin was in no mood to give up and with extreme determination he put some respectability into the match score with a victory over John Street Captain, Stephen O’Hagan in the last.

After a difficult campaign last term, Seaton Legion started as they hopefully mean to go on with a 4-2 home win over Keswick’s, Derwent Club.  Wins for Seaton’s Scott Messenger, Paul Mostyn, Allan Stephenson and Mark Tatton sealed the deal for the Legionnaires with Vince Peet and Chris D’Leny offering some resistance for the lakesiders.

Senhouse Street derby match between the A and B teams ended with last season’s division 2 league runners up putting one over on last season’s division 2 champions in emphatic style as the A team won 5-1. The only notable contribution of the contest came in frame six from B team’s David Bracken in the form of a 25 break, albeit in a defeat by George Taylor.

In the last match in division 1 this week Station Road C and current Champions W’ton Cons produced a 3-3 stalemate. In a contest that ebbed and flowed Station Road C’s Paul Graham made the only break of note as in frame four he produced a contribution of 28 in his victory over Cons’ Ryan Ismay.

Round 1 - 26th September 2012

Defending Champions Start with a win

The 2012/13 season in The Window Outlet Cockermouth & District Snooker League started this week with Workington Cons getting off to a positive start with a 4-2 home win over promoted Senhouse Street A.

A victory for the current Division 1 champions was the perfect begining to a new campaign but they didn’t have it all their own way. Victories for Senhouse A’s Geoff Anderson and Michael Poole in two out of the first three frames had the Cons side on the back foot but with a break of 25 from Cons’ captain Ryan Adams, in a victorious fourth frame, the momentum swung in their favour. 2011 County Champion Alan Moore made it 3-2 in a hard fought frame against Alan Ferris and with Mike Park rounding up the proceedings with a convincing win over Senhouse A Captain George Davison in the last, a satisfying Cons win was completed.

Last season’s Division 1 playoff runners up John Street Club made the tricky trip to Keswick to take on the Derwent Club and came away with a superb 4-2 win. A high quality contest was definitely underlined with a clearance of 79 from John Street’s Peter O’Hagan on the back of a 28 break from Carl Arthur.  This certainly sets a good total for the highest break of the division in just his first game of the season. Other notables came from John Street’s Alan McLeod (29), Stephen O’Hagan (29, albeit in a defeat by Paul Killingley) and Derwent’s Vince Peet (27).

Also in Division 1 Flimby Social put behind them the loss of a couple of key players to sweep aside last season’s Division 2 champions, Senhouse Street B, 5-1. The catalyst for this fine home win definitely came from Flimby’s Dave Teasdale as he defeated last season’s all conquering Shaun Ayre in frame two. A break of 25 from Flimby’s Mike Walker took care of frame three and even though captain, Geoff Banton could not find enough to beat Senhouse B’s Andy Aitken in the fifth, Kevin Kirkham finished it off in the last with his own break of 25.

Seaton Legion versus Station Road C was postponed.

In Division two Workington Legion shocked last season’s 7 a side TKO champions Maryport Social with a 4-2 home win. An early 2-1 lead for the Workington side soon turned to 3-1 as league debutant Haydon Mostyn produced a frame winning 26 break to defeat the experienced Pete Donachy. A further victory for Legion Captain Mark Lavin made it 4-1 but Social Captain Colin Sealby did offer some consolation as he presided over Eric McMullen.

Gaining confidence as the campaign unfolded last season’s third placed United Club brought some of that forward as they defeated relegated Station Road A 4-2. An excellent away win started well with United captain Dave Chapman winning on the pink against Mike Walker. However an in-off on the final pink put paid to Clive Lister’s chances in frame two against Grant Porter and with league rookie, John Teasdale winning on the black against United’s Ian Graham, Station Road A led 2-1. The tide turned in frame four as United’s Tony Hindmoor potted brown, blue and pink to win from behind and with team mate Andrew Mitchelhill winning convincingly in frame five the score was now 3-2 to the United Club. Even though Station Road A ‘Iron Man’ Keith Telford gave it his usual 110% against Mark Suitor in the last he could find no answers as the United Club player sealed the match victory comfortably.

In the final game in Division 2 Maryport Labour hosted league newcomers Workington Golf Club. Showing no nerves, the Golf Club side rose to the challenge in recording a very impressive 5-1 win.

Sun Inn versus Station Road B was postponed.
