Week 19 matches – March 2nd 2016
Station B look invincible
Window Outlet Cockermouth and District Snooker League division 1 leaders, Station Road B, produced their seventeenth win in eighteen games this week as they defeated division 2’s Sun Inn 4-2.
Making the trip from Workington to Aspatria the Station Road side produced a gritty performance to show yet another facet of their ability to win no matter what the circumstances. Always a tricky trip, the defending top tier champions started well with a frame winning break of 30 from Alan McLeod but in leading 4-1 it was the Sun Inns’ Andrew Scott who stood firmly to halt the Station B charge with an excellent contribution of 36. Sun Inn are still fifth in division 2.
Workington Golf Club maintained their second place in division 1 with a 5-1 home win against Keswick’s Derwent Club. Even though the Golf Club shaved a point of Station B’s league lead they still sit 17 points behind. Top breaks in the match came from the Golf Club’s Bryan Walker with 27 and Mark Brasted with 43. The Derwent Club are third in division 2.
Division 1’s fifth placed Vets Club improvement over the last few weeks continued as they defeated fellow townies Workington Legion 5-1. A confident home win was highlighted with breaks of 27 and 35 from Vets cueists Paul Graham and captain Kevin Basnett respectively. The Legion still sit in division 2’s bottom place.
An Andrew Mitchelhill frame winning break of 28 against two time county champion Alan Moore was definitely a feature in the United Club versus Workington Cons fixture but it could not help division 1 side improve their position in the table as they were defeated 4-2. Workington’s United Club remain bottom of division one with Cons four places above them in third.
Station Road A whitewashed fellow division 2 side, Senhouse Street Club 6-0 but with no recordable contributions (over 20) from either team the match was a lot closer than the scoreline suggests. This however was not something that the Station A side were bothered about as the six points accumulated allowed them to join season long leaders Flimby Social (no game this week) at the top of the division 2 table. Senhouse hang on to their playoff place in fourth.
Finally, Maryport Social scraped a 4-2 home win over Seaton Legion with a black win for Andrew Henderson against Seaton captain, Alan Cannan in the last frame of the match. Social and the Legion are both unmoved in division 1 - fourth and sixth place respectively.
Week 18 matches – February 24th 2016
Vickers in scintillating form
Flimby Socials Paul Vickers was in scintillating form in the Window Outlet Cockermouth and District Snooker League this week as a division 2 season’s best break of 75 not only enabled him to beat five time county champion Rob Sim but it also helped his team fight out a 3-3 home draw with division 1 second placed Workington Golf Club.
The Flimby cueists’ fourth frame contribution brought the match to life as the remaining two frames also saw recordable breaks with team mates Kevin Kirkham making 21 (even though he was defeated by Phil Sorfleet) and Mike Walker 24. Flimby still top division 2.
Station Road A’s Tom Thompson and Barry Collins made breaks of 23 and 29 respectively in the first two frames of their home match with Workington Legion and in scraping through the next two it enabled the division 2 outfit to eventually win 6-0. Workington’s Station Road A remain second with the Legion still in the wooden spoon spot.
Division 1 leaders, Station Road A’s 5-1 scoreline reads like a convincing away win but for a couple of close frames going their way the match could have had a very different outcome. Opponents, Seaton Legion fought valiantly but with just a point from the fixture it sees them drop down to a division 1 sixth place. Top breaks in the match came from Station A’s Tony Elliott with 38 and Seaton’s Allan Stephenson with 25 – even though he was defeated by Peter O’Hagan.
Division 2’s Senhouse Street Club came from 3-1 down to draw 3-3 with division 1’s Maryport Social with a Manny Stalker break of 21 kick starting the revival. Any result against opponents from a higher division is always a good one especially as Social have put in some strong performances all season. Senhouse and Social both hang on to their top four playoff places in their respective divisions.
Workington’s Vets Club moved up one place in to fifth in division 1 as they drew 3-3 with fellow townies, the United Club. The evenly matched fixture never saw more than one frame separate the two sides however the result could not lift the United Club off the bottom of the division 1 table.
Finally, Keswick’s Derwent Club and Aspatria’s Sun Inn also produced a result that ended in a 3-3 draw with the two teams holding their division 2 positions in third and fifth respectively.
Week 17 matches – February 17th 2016
United win the TKO
Workington’s United Club are the new Window Outlet Cockermouth and District Snooker League 7 a side TKO handicap champions.
A win for the division 1 side gives them their first cup victory in their relatively short spell in the league but in defeating Station Road A 4-2 they handed out yet another final defeat to the division 2 side – their fourth in six years.
David Chapman (+26 handicap) got the ball rolling for the United Club as a good long brown followed by a crucial fluke on the blue enabled him to pot the pink in his 60-51 victory over Station A’s Tom Thompson (+30).
Frame two saw Station B’s Barry Collins (+25) level the match score as an early break of 36 gave United’s Mark Suitor too much to do with the Station B cueist recording a 77-26 victory.
In frame three United’s Richard Nelson (+19) cancelled out his handicap deficit in quick fashion against Steve Jackson (+35) but in moving 40 in front with just the colours remaining the Station A player could find no answers with Nelson winning 62-22.
A couple of early in-offs from United’s Willie Fearon (+35) set the tone in frame four as Mark Robertson (+26) capitalised to gain an important lead. A good yellow, green and brown gave Fearon a chance but in potting the blue Robertson took the frame for a 74-47 win and a 2-2 scoreline.
Frame five saw Paul Johnston (+42) produce his performance of the season against Station A’s Mike Walker (+28) as some fine potting enabled him to win 77-39.
At 3-2 to the United Club Andrew Mitchelhill (+15) had the task of taking on Station B ‘Iron Man’ Keith Telford (+37). A nip and tuck start was broken with Mitchelhill break of 23 to give the United captain a psychological advantage. Going from strength to strength Mitchelhill pushed home his advantage to close out the cup win with a 80-34 victory to the delight of his team mates.
In the league Workington’s Station Road B produced their third whitewash in four weeks to move into a 15 point lead in the top division as they defeated division 2’s Senhouse Street Club 6-0. Top breaks in the match came from Station B’s Tony Elliott and Alan McLeod with 25 and 26 respectively. Senhouse Street stay fourth in division 2.
Division 1 third placed Workington Golf Club closed the gap to one point on second placed opponents Workington Cons with a 4-2 home win. In a match that surprisingly saw no recordable contributions the Golfers are still in a good position given the fact that they hold a game in hand over their closest rivals.
Maryport Social maintained their division 1 fourth place with a 5-1 home victory over division 2 bottom team, Workington Legion. The only break of the match came in the last frame with 35 from Socials Andrew Henderson in his victory over Daniel McMullen.
Flimby’s Kevin Kirkham stretched his massive lead in the division 2 break aggregate and leading player averages with two contributions of 28 to win the first frame in his teams’ 3-3 away draw against Aspatria’s Sun Inn. The only other breaks of the contest both came in frame four as a Ben Scott contribution of 24 was cancelled out with a frame winning break of 22 from Flimby’s Shane Evitts. Flimby now have an 11 point lead in division 2 with the Sun Inn four places below in fifth.
A break of 25 from Seaton’s Allan Stephenson was the only contribution of note in his teams’ 3-3 draw with Keswick’s Derwent Club. Seaton stay fifth in division 1 with Derwent also unmoved in a division 2 third spot.
Finally, Workington’s Vets Club and fellow townies Station Road A could not be separated in a 3-3 draw that sees both teams unmoved in their respective divisions – Vets sixth in division 1 and Station A second in division 2.
Week 16 matches – February 10th 2016
Workington Cons go second
Workington Cons moved into second place in the Window Outlet Cockermouth and District Snooker league division one this week on the back of a 6-0 home victory against Aspatria’s Sun Inn.
As last weeks division 1 second placed team, Workington Golf, did not have a game the Cons Club really took advantage gaining maximum points as Stuart Shepherd and Alan Moore top scored with 33 & 38. The Sun Inn stay fifth in division 2.
Division 1 league leaders, Station Road B, didn’t reach the same level as in previous weeks performances however they still managed to win 4-2 over wooden spoon placed Workington Legion. Wins for Tony Elliott, Mark Tunstall, Shaun Ayre and division 1 leading player Peter O’Hagan put paid to an upset in a match that surprisingly saw not recordable break aggregate contributions.
Workington’s Vets Club produced their best performance of the season so far to defeat Maryport Social 5-1. A home victory could be a good omen for the Vets side as not only did it lift them off the bottom of the division 1 table it could prove to be a vital fillip in the run in as 7 out of their last 9 games are at home. Vets captain, Kevin Basnett added to his breaks aggregate lead with a contribution of 59 (clearance) and team mate Steve Garroway made the only other break of the match with 34. Vets are sixth in division 1 with Social still two places above in fourth.
Flimby Social had their division 2 lead cut to 9 points as they went down 4-2 at home to division 1’s Seaton Legion. Division 2 leading light Kevin Kirkham, had a first frame winning break of 21 cancelled out in frame two as Mike Dawson levelled the score for Seaton with a contribution of 25 to defeat Flimby’s Wayne Dustin. As Seaton won two out of the next three frames Flimby only had the draw left to play for. Captain Geoff Banton however was never allowed out of first gear as Seaton’s Paul Smith produced his performance of the season to take the victory for the Legion outfit. Seaton stay fifth in division 1.
Station Road A produced only their second win of the season with a 5-1 home victory over Workington’s United Club but with nine draws already to their name it was enough to lift them up to second in division 2. Any victory against opponents from a higher division is a good one however Station B excelled which was typified in frame winning performances from Barry Collins (42 break) and Mark Robertson (20 break). The United Club drop to the bottom (7th) of division 1.
Finally, Workington’s Senhouse Street Club produced a frustrating 4-2 home win against Keswick’s Derwent Club. Leading 4-0 and looking good for a convincing victory the Senhouse sides’ hopes were dashed as 4-1 was turned into 4-2 with a snooker escape that yielded a frame winning pot for Keswick’s Tom Mattinson over Senhouse captain, George Davison.
Week 15 matches – February 3rd 2016
Station B Excel
Station Road B produced one of their best performances of the season in The Window Outlet Cockermouth and District Snooker League this week to defeat the Vets Club 6-0.
In winning all six frames the Station A side produced a plethora of breaks as fellow division 1 side, the Vets Club, could find no answers to stop the top division league leaders taking a massive 10 point lead.
The match may have had a very different feel had Paul Graham converted a 48 point advantage in the first frame that also included a break of 34. Nevertheless it was Station B cueist, Tony Elliott who came roaring back with his own recordable contribution of 25 to pip Graham at the post. With the first frame on the board that gave the Station B players the cue to move in overdrive and with Alan McLeod (38), Peter O’Hagan (30 & 38) & Stephen O’Hagan (25) all making excellent breaks the score was soon 5-0. Last up Vets Captain, Kevin Basnett may have had ideas on offering some consolation but in meeting Shaun Ayre his efforts proved powerless as the Station B cueists potted just about every ball he went for to complete the whitewash. The Vets Club sink to the bottom of the division 1 table again as a result.
Seaton Legion delivered the second half of a remarkable league double over Workington’s Cons Club as the villagers recorded a 4-2 home win. A break of 25 by Cons Mike Park wasn’t enough take the first as Paul Mostyn answered with 29 to take the frame. A contribution of 44 by Richard McCarthy was enough to level the scores but with Seaton’s Allan Stephenson, Mark Tatton and Karl Newton taking the next three the match victory was assured. Cons’ Alan Moore did limit the damage in the last with a win over Alan Cannan but the loss moves Cons down to a division 1 third spot. Seaton Legion move up one place, also in division 1, to sixth.
Given the way a couple of the frames went division 2 leaders, Flimby Social, walked away feeling they had nicked a draw against fellow second tier opponents, Senhouse Street 3-3. Top Senhouse breaks came from David Bracken (20, even though he was defeated by Kevin Kirkham) and Alan Ferris (21) with Flimby’s only recordable contribution coming from Michael Walker (36).
Workington Golf Club now sit in a lone division 1 second spot courtesy of a 5-1 away win against fellow Workington side, the United Club. The Golf Club’s Rob Sim was in superb form as with breaks of 64 and 25 he powered to a first frame win over Paul Johnston 111-3. The only United win came from Clive Lister as he turned Ian Fulton over with ease. The United Club stay fifth in division 1.
Maryport Social remained unmoved in fourth in division 1 on the back of hard fought 3-3 draw against division 2’s Station Road A. Breaks 25 by Socials Ryan Ismay and 22 by Station A’s Mike Walker moved the match along to a 3-1 Station A advantage but it was Paul Lister and Andrew Henderson who saved Socials blushes with two nail biting victories. Station A are still third in division 2.
Finally, Keswick’s Derwent Club defeated fellow division 2 opponents, Workington Legion 4-2. A home win for the lakesiders sees them moved into a lone second place with the Legion still rooted to the bottom of the league.
Week 14 matches – January 27th 2016
Top three dominate
Window Outlet Cockermouth and District Snooker League division 1 top three sides were all in imperious form this week as each one of them delivered a 6-0 whitewash.
Leaders Station Road B produced their whitewash against division 2 and club rivals Station Road A with Tony Elliott and Peter O’Hagan top scoring for Station A with breaks of 32 and 33. Station Road A drop down to third in division 2.
Second placed Workington Cons produced a blitz of breaks in the first three frames of their 6-0 home victory against division 2’s Senhouse Street Club as Richard McCarthy (28 & 25), Mike Park (25) and Alan Moore (31) all delivered convincing performances. Senhouse Street stay fifth in division 2.
Home side Workington Golf Club were the last of the top three sides to win to nil as they defeated Aspatria’s Sun Inn. Recordable break aggregate contributions all came from Golf Club players as Phil Sorfleet (28), Mark Brasted (27) and Bryan Walker (30) added to their totals. The Sun Inn stay fourth in division 2.
Workington’s Vets Club moved off the bottom of division 1 with a 4-2 home win over Keswick’s Derwent Club. Vets captain, Kevin Basnett was the star of the show with contributions of 41 & 38 in the second frame of the match and team mate Steve Garroway finished the fixture of nicely with his own break of 27. Vets are now sixth in division 1 with Derwent up to second in division 2.
Flimby Social extended their division 2 lead to a massive 12 points with a 5-1 away victory at Workington Legion. Flimby’s Shane Evitts made a frame winning break of 22 to help his side to a 5-0 lead but it was Legion’s Chris Hunter who avoided the whitewash in the last frame of the night with a 20 break to boot. Workington Legion remain at the foot of division 2.
Finally, last year’s two promoted teams, Maryport Social and Workington’s United Club, scrapped out a 3-3 draw with the United Club probably being marginally happier given Maryport had the home fixture. The only contribution of the match came from United captain Andrew Mitchelhill with a break of 33 as he limited fellow captain, Colin Sealby to just 3 points. Social and United Club stay in a division 1 fourth and fifth spot respectively.
Week 13 matches – January 20th 2016
Station B move further ahead
Station Road B stretched their division 1 lead further in the Window Outlet Cockermouth and District Snooker League this week with a 5-1 win over fellow top tier opponents, Maryport Social.
The first frame saw a break of 30 by Social’s Ryan Ismay wiped out by Stephen O’Hagan as the Station B captain took a 1-0 match lead. Tony Elliott and Mark Tunstall quickly won the next two but it was Maryport’s Paul Lister who dragged one back to reduce the scoreline to 3-1. In the next a contribution of 49 by Peter O’Hagan enabled Station B to move further ahead and it was team mate Shaun Ayre who nicked the last for a satisfying match victory. Maryport remain fourth in division 1.
Division 2 leaders, Flimby Social lost their first home game of the season to division 1 bottom side, Vets Club but with second placed Station Road A only managing a 3-3 draw (against Keswick’s Derwent Club) Flimby’s lead was cut by just a solitary point. Kevin Basnett made the highest break for the Vets club with 32 and Kevin Kirkham and Paul Vickers delivered Flimby’s best with 26 and 24 respectively. In the Derwent Club versus Station Road A fixture, Station A’s Tom Thompson (30) and Mike Walker (30 & 24) produced their team’s best however Derwent captain, Mark Forsyth also got on the break aggregate score sheet with his own contribution of 22. Derwent stay in a division 2 fourth spot.
Workington Cons moved into a share for second place in division 1 with a 4-2 away win over division 2’s Workington Legion. In a game that surprisingly saw no recordable break aggregate contributions, Leigh McTiffin and Mark Ritson were the only players to spoil the Cons party as they defeated Mike Park and Stuart Shepherd. Legion are still bottom of division 2.
Breaks of 29 by Rob Sim and 25 by Mark Brasted did Workington Golf Club no harm as they battled out a 3-3 away draw against division 1 equals, Seaton Legion. The Golfers are now tied with Cons in second place with Seaton in sixth.
Finally, a 4-0 lead in the United Club’s away fixture against the Sun Inn sealed the Aspatria side’s fate as the Workington outfit went on to win 5-1. The United Club keep a division 1 fifth place and the Sun Inn move into a division 2 fourth spot courtesy of Senhouse Street’s free week.
Week 12 matches – January 13th 2016
Station B show mental strength
Division 1 leaders Station Road B showed their mental strength yet again in the Window Outlet Cockermouth and District Snooker league this week as they recovered from 2-1 to defeat fellow Workington side, The United Club 4-2.
A break of 31 in the first wasn’t enough for Simon Frazer as he was defeated by United’s Clive Lister but with Station B’s Mark Tunstall making a contribution of 26 in the next it proved enough to take the score to 1-1. A 28 break by United’s Andrew Mitchelhill made it 2-1 however as Tony Elliott and Peter O’Hagan took the next two Station B moved 3-2 ahead. A Dave Chapman break of 35 in the last looked certain to be enough to for the United Club to take the draw, nevertheless Shaun Ayre clawed his way back and with a superb black ball win he claimed the team victory. The United Club are unmoved in a division 1 sixth spot.
Workington Golf Club moved into a lone second place in division 1 with a 6-0 home victory over division 2’s Senhouse Street Club. Breaks from Phil Sorfleet (40), Rob Sim (29) and Mark Brasted (28) enabled the golfers to move into a rapid 3-0 lead. A more tactical second part of the match could not stop the golf club from taking the whitewash as Bryan Walker, Ian Fulton and Mark Cowen finished the job. Manny Stalker recorded the only Senhouse break with 22. Senhouse still sit in division 2 fourth place.
Division 1’s Workington Cons may have dropped down to third in the table but with a 5-1 victory over fellow townies the Vets Club they are still nicely placed with nearly half the season gone. Cons’ Richard McCarthy (26), Alan Moore (27) and Julian Plaza (25) were the fixture’s only break makers as the match victory pushed the Vets to the bottom of the division 1 table.
Still topping the division 2 table Flimby Social were given a jolt as they were pegged back from 3-1 to 3-3 by a very resilient Station Road A side. Breaks of 39 by Kevin Kirkham (even though he was defeated by Tom Thompson) and 22 by Paul Vickers gave Flimby the confidence to move ahead but it was Station Road’s John Teasdale and Barry Collins who recovered the situation with two fine victories.
A lone break of 28 by Aspatria’s Andrew Scott was not enough for his Sun Inn team to hold Seaton Legion back as the villagers claimed an excellent 4-2 away win. Seaton Legion moved up two places to fifth in division 1 and Sun Inn joined Senhouse in a division 2 fourth spot.
Derwent’s Mick Brown made an excellent break of 32 in his frame against Paul Lister but that and pretty much any other of his teams efforts were not enough to see team stop the charge of Maryport Social as the seaside town took the victory 5-1. This home win sees the Maryport outfit cement their division 1 fourth spot with Keswick’s Derwent Club still in a division two third place.
In the first of the 7 a side KO Semi-Finals Station Road A made full use of their handicap advantage to defeat Workington Cons 4-1. A superb 25 clearance by Barry Collins in the first and a Mike Walker black ball win in the second set the Station Road A side up for the victory as they bid to become champions in a competition which has seen them lose 3 Finals and one Semi-Final in the last five years.
Week 11 matches – January 6th 2016
League Leaders Snatch Victory
Back after the Xmas break division 1 leaders, Station Road B snatched the last two frames to see out a 4-2 win over division 2’s Derwent Club in the Window Outlet Cockermouth and District Snooker League this week.
An away fixture for the top tier leaders still saw them as strong favourites for a convincing win going into the match against but a frame winning contribution of 23 by Andrew Sharp gave Derwent the perfect start. Frame two produced a match highest break of 40 by Station B’s Tony Elliott as he levelled the score. With the next two frames shared it was Shaun Ayre who took an important 3-2 for Station B with a victory over Tom Mattinson. In the final frame Station B talisman, Peter O’Hagan held off the challenge of Keswick veteran, Joe Bell with a break of 29 to seal the match win. Derwent stay second in division 2.
Another division 1 side, this time second placed Workington Cons found themselves in an even trickier position against lower divisional opponents as they required all three of the remaining frames to pull off a victory against Station Road A, 4-2. The Cons’ best performances came from Richard McCarthy (54 break) and Alan Moore (25 break) with Station A’s Mike Walker delivering his sides’ best with 22 in his win over Mike Park. Station A are unmoved in a division 2 third spot.
The leagues two Social sides, division 2’s Flimby and division 1’s Maryport fought out a 3-3 draw to leave their respective league position unchanged – Flimby top of division 2 and Maryport fourth in division 1. Star performance came from Flimby’s Kevin Kirkham as his outstanding first half of the season continued, this time with breaks 25 and 43 in his destruction of Craig Stuart in the very first frame of the match.
Workington Golf Club kept things very tight at the top end of division 1 as a 4-2 away win against division 2’s Workington Legion ensured they stayed in third but on the same points as second placed Workington Cons. Top breaks both came from Golf Club players as Rob Sim (48) and Phil Sorfleet (28) added to their aggregate totals with convincing wins. Workington Legion still prop up division 2.
All division 2 fixture between Workington’s Senhouse Street Club and Aspatria’s Sun Inn ended in a 3-3 draw but not before the Senhouse side clawed back from 3-1 down. Sun Inn’s Ben Irving was the fixtures leading light as he produced the only recordable contribution of the match with 26. Senhouse are in fourth with Sun Inn in fifth.
Finally, Workington’s United Club recovered from 2-1 down to defeat fellow division 1 opponents, Seaton Legion 4-2. In the only match with no breaks to trouble the scorers this week the United Club moved up one place to fifth however Seaton still remain at the foot of the table in seventh.
Week 10 matches – December 23rd 2015
Socials form continues
Maryport Social continued in their recent run of form in the Window Outlet Cockermouth and District Snooker League with a 3-3 draw against multiple former top tier champions Workington Cons.
A 30 break for Socials Ryan Ismay took care of the first frame and with a break of 30 from team mate Craig Stuart in the second 2-0 looked on the cards. Nevertheless Cons’ Ryan Barker had other ideas and with a clearance of 34 the Cons cueist made it 1-1. The remainder of the match didn’t quite live up to its earlier drama with father/son duo Paul and Scott Lister taking the points for Social and Cons Stuart Shepherd and Julian Plaza ensuring the match stayed tied. Cons stay second in division 1 with Social also unmoved in a division 1 fourth spot.
Division 1 third placed team, Workington Golf Club were also unmoved in the table even though they defeated Workington’s Vets Club 4-2. Phil Sorfleet and Mark Cowen made the top breaks for the Golfers with 32 and 27 but it was Vets captain, Kevin Basnett who made the highest of the match and indeed the week with a 50 clearance. Vets stay fifth in division 1.
Division 1’s Seaton Legion beat division 2’s Senhouse Street with ease, 5-1 with only Raymond Miller offering any resistance. Allan Stephenson top scored on the night with 29 in his win over Senhouse’s David Bracken. Legion stay sixth in division 1 with Senhouse fourth in division 2.
Top tier league leaders Station Road A were made to work for their victory against 2nd divisions’ Flimby Social. A 4-2 away win could have had a very different look had the Workington side not won all of the first four frames on the last few balls. Top breaks came from Flimby’s Paul Vickers with 24 (even though he was defeated by Peter O’Hagan) and 25 from Station B’s Alan McLeod. Flimby still lead division 2.
Aspatria’s Sun Inn recorded their first win of the season in some style as defeated Workington Legion 5-1 at home. The victory lifts them off the bottom of division 2 for the first time this season replacing their opponents in fifth. Aspatria’s Ben Scott starred again for his side with a match best break of 24.
Finally, Workington’s United Club travelled to Keswick’s Derwent Club and came away with a satisfying 4-2 win however this still wasn’t enough to lift them off the bottom of the division 1 table. Derwent stay third in division 2.
Week 9 matches – December 16th 2015
Station B defeat closest challengers
Station Road B delivered a cracking 4-2 away win in the Window Outlet Cockermouth and District Snooker league’s premier fixture this week.
Facing second placed Workington Cons the division 1 league leaders closed the match out from 2-2 with wins from Alan McLeod (31 break) and Tony Elliott (35 break). The only recordable contribution from the Cons side came from former County Champion Alan Moore with 35 in his fourth frame win over Mark Tunstall.
Division 2 leaders Flimby Social produced yet another plethora of breaks this time in a 5-1 home win over Keswick’s Derwent Club. Kevin Kirkham added to his already impressive break aggregate total with 25 & 21, Shane Evitts delivered 28 but it was Flimby captain Geoff Banton who made the highest with 32 as all three won with ease. Derwent remain third in division 2.
Workington Golf Club bounced back from last week’s defeat to trounce Station Road A 5-1 away to keep them in touch with the top two division 1 teams. Highest break of the contest came from the Golf Club’s Rob Sim with 45. Station A’s John Teasdale did manage to challenge the break aggregate scorers with 23 however he still went down to Ian Fulton on the final ball of their frame. Station Road A are still second in division 2.
Division 1’s Seaton Legion produced the round’s only whitewash as they thumped division 2’s Workington Legion 6-0. Any away victory is a good one but in taking all the points on offer the Seaton outfit moved themselves off the bottom of the table into sixth. Workington Legion are fifth in division 2.
Vets’ captain Kevin Basnett was the only player to record a break (34) in his teams’ fixture against Aspatria’s Sun Inn however it did give his side the confidence to push on to a 5-1 home win. Vets stay fifth in division 1 and the Sun Inn still prop up division 2.
Finally, Workington’s United Club produced their third win of the season with a 4-2 home victory over fellow townies Senhouse Street Club. United captain Andrew Mitchelhill was the only player to produce a recordable contribution with 30 in his win over Senhouse captain George Davison. United are still at the bottom of division 1 with Senhouse fourth in division 2.
Week 8 matches – December 9th 2015
Social shock golfers
Maryport Social Club shocked Workington Golf Club in the Cockermouth and District Snooker League this week with a 5-1 home win to leapfrog them into third in the division 1 table.
Victories for Ryan Ismay, Craig Stuart, John Fleming, Scott Lister and Paul Lister helped the promoted side to their fourth win of the campaign as the Social side continued in their excellent start to the season.
Flimby Social moved back to the top of division 2 on the back of a 5-1 home win over division 1’s United Club. A feast of breaks helped the Flimby side gain their fifth win of the season with Paul Vickers (23), Kevin Kirkham (22 & 31) and Shane Evitts (23) all contributing to their aggregate totals. The United Club stay sixth in division 1.
Workington Cons maintained their second spot in division 1 with a 5-1 away win over Keswick’s Derwent Club. Cons’ Alan Moore top scored with 34 in a match that surprisingly only saw one recordable contribution. Derwent drop down to third place in division 2.
Michael Poole made breaks of 20 & 24 in Senhouse Street’s 5-1 home win over fellow division 2 side Workington Legion. The two top four challenging side swapped places in the division with Senhouse now in fourth and Workington Legion in fifth.
Seaton Legion were pegged back from 3-1 to 3-3 in a highly entertaining draw with Workington’s Vets Club. The two division 1 sides stay unmoved in the top division in sixth and fourth respectively. Seaton’s Mark Tatton and Paul Mostyn made the only breaks in the match with contributions of 30 & 32.
Finally, Aspatria’s Sun Inn and Workington’s Station Road Club A battled out a 3-3 draw in a match that never saw than one frame between the two teams. Sun Inn’s Ben Scott was the only player to record a break with 20 in his win over Keith Telford. Station Road A move up to second and Sun Inn stay in sixth, both in division 2.
Week 7 matches – December 2nd 2015
Current champs negotiate tough fixture
In the Cockermouth and District Snooker League’s biggest fixture this week top tier leaders, Station Road B resisted any challenge from Workington Golf Club with an authoritative performance to preside 4-2.
An away fixture may have added to the difficulty but as Station B’s Peter O’Hagan led the way with a frame winning break of 28 in the fourth his are now a massive 11 points in front at the top of division 1 with less than a third of the season completed. The Golfers sit third in division 1.
Workington Cons moved into second place in division 1 with a 5-1 home win over division 2 favourites, Flimby Social. The highlight of the match came in the very first frame as Cons’ Richard McCarthy added a break of 50 to his aggregate total in his win over Flimby’s Wayne Dustin. Flimby slip into third in division 2.
Workington’s Vets Club fed off last week’s first win with their second victory in as many weeks, this time over Senhouse Street Club 4-2. A 3-0 lead for the division 1 side set up the victory but with Senhouse reducing the score to 3-2 on the back of a frame winning break of 31 from Manny Stalker it took a resolute Steve Garroway display in the last to secure the Vets win. Senhouse drop down to fifth in division 2 and Vets stay in fifth in division 1.
A 4-2 win for Maryport Social over Aspatria’s Sun Inn kept them in a division 1 fourth spot but a defeat keeps their opponents at the foot of division 2. Breaks came from Socials Andrew Henderson with 25 and Sun Inns Gary Miller and Andrew Scott with 22 and 27 respectively.
In a battle of division 1 versus division 2 sides second tier outfit, Station Road A came out on top as they over turned Seaton Legion 4-2. A great win for the Workington team moved them into second in division 2 with Seaton staying at the bottom of division 1. Highest contribution of the night came from Station A’s John Teasdale with 26.
Finally, Workington’s United Club and Workington Legion battled out a 3-3 draw. This result sees the Legion side move into fourth in division 2 but the United Club remain unchanged in sixth in division 1. The games best effort came from Workington Legions Brian Storey in frame five with 25 in his win over Willie Fearon.
7 a side TKO – November 25th 2015
Defending champs match on
Current Window Outlet Cockermouth and District Snooker league 7 a side TKO handicap champions, Flimby Social coasted through to the Semi-Finals of the league’s premier cup competition again, this time with a 4-0 home win over Senhouse Street Club.
In the last twenty years only the former John Street Club side (now largely Station Road B) have won back to back TKO titles and now with the competition being played under a handicap format Flimby’s place in the Semi-Finals is just as impressive. Victories for Paul Vickers, Mike Walker, Kevin Kirkham and Wayne Dustin were completed in rapid fashion as the Senhouse side were brushed aside.
Workington’s United Club will make their first appearance in a 7’s TKO Semi-Final this coming on the back of an away 4-2 QF win over Aspatria’s Sun Inn. A 32 break by Ben Scott helped the Aspatria side gain a 2-1 advantage but with Andrew Mitchelhill, Paul Johnston and Willie Fearon all proving victorious for the United Club a last four spot now awaits.
Heavyweight clash between Station Road B and Workington Cons was always going to be a close match with both multiple former winners in great form. With a home tie and a current top spot in the league to Station B’s advantage they most definitely went in their QF as favourites. Nevertheless it was a determined Cons side that moved through to the Semi’s with a 4-2 win.
In the competition’s last QF tie Station Road A made the most of their handicap advantage to defeat Workington Golf Club 4-1. Top Golf Club breaks came from Phil Sorfleet with 28 and Rob Sim with 38 (even though he was defeated by Keith Telford). The only recordable contribution from Station Road A came in the form of a 22 break by Mike Walker.
In the 7 a side plate competition (First round losers) the only QF tie played was between Keswick’s Derwent Club and Workington’s Vets club with the lakeside outfit trouncing the Vets side 4-0. Derwent’s Mark Forsyth top scored with 36 in his win over Stuart Ryan.
Maryport Social received a walkover in their plate QF match against Workington Legion.
Week 6 matches – November 18th 2015
Former champs warming up
Workington Cons Richard McCarthy recorded the highest break so far this season in Window Outlet Cockermouth and District Snooker league this week with 88 to help his team beat the United Club 4-2.
In the all division 1 fixture a 3-0 lead for the Cons gave the former champions a great start but it was United captain Andrew Mitchelhill who stopped the rot with a break of 28 to defeat Mike Park. As the last two frames were shared further United Club damage limitation was offered but it didn’t stop them slipping down to sixth in the table.
Division 1’s Vets club produced their first win of the season as they went on to defeat second tier side, Workington Legion 5-1. Highlight of the match came in frame two as Vets captain Kevin Basnett topped the 100 point mark with breaks of 25 and 49 to boot.
League leaders in division 1, Station Road B started well in their fixture against division 2’s Sun Inn with Tony Elliott making what turned out to be frame winning breaks of 31 & 41. From this position the Workington side powered to a 5-1 win to move 9 points clear. The only other recordable contribution came from Sun Inn’s Ben Irving with 24, however this proved to be ill fated as he eventually went down to Shaun Ayre. Aspatria’s Sun Inn remain at the bottom of division 2.
Workington Golf Club maintained their second place in division 1 with a 4-2 away win over division 2’s Derwent Club. Even though the Keswick side were defeated a fixtureless week for division 2 leaders, Flimby Social allowed the Derwent side to climb to the top of the table.
Workington sides Senhouse Street Club and Station Road A battled out a 3-3 draw in the all division 2 fixture to keep their fourth and third places in the table. Senhouse captain David Bracken top scored on the evening with a break of 23.
Finally Seaton Legion turned current league form on its head as they defeated Maryport Social 4-2 at home. The two division 1 teams could only produce one recordable contribution between them as Seaton’s Mark Tatton made a break of 32 in the last frame of the night in his win over Steven Armstrong.
Week 5 matches – November 11th 2015

Current Window Outlet Cockermouth and District Snooker league division 1 champions, Station Road B delivered their second 6-0 win in as many weeks this time over fellow top tier side Seaton Legion.
Looking as dominant as ever, the Workington side now sit with a whopping eight point lead at the top of the table. Their authority was particularly evident in frames four and six as Peter O’Hagan and Shaun Ayre produced breaks of 27 and 28 respectively in confident home wins over Seaton’s Alan Evan and Mark Tatton.
Given Flimby Social’s fantastic start to the season they went into their game this week with all the self-belief they could have wished for, however in facing division 1’s Workington Golf Club they were ground to a massive halt. A 6-0 defeat later the Flimby side were sent home licking their wounds with Golfers Phil Sorfleet, Rob Sim and Ian Fulton top scoring with contributions of 25, 35 & 45. Consolation for Flimby is that they remain top of division 2 with the Golf Club second in division 1.
The Vets club are left still looking for their first win of the season after a 4-2 defeat at the hands of fellow division 1 opponents, United Club. At 2-0 up on the back of a frame winning break of 34 from Vets captain, Kevin Basnett the Workington outfit must have fancied their chances of breaking their duck. Nevertheless a promoted United Club side came roaring back and with victories for Andrew Mitchelhill, Dave Chapman, Mark Suitor and Clive Lister they snatched the win. The United Club sit fifth and the Vets in sixth.
Division 2 sides Workington Legion and Station Road A slogged out a 3-3 draw in a game of two halves. Leading 3-0 Station Road A were on course for their first win of the season but in losing the last three frames they have now become the leagues draw specialists with 4 in 5 matches. Station Road A are in fourth with Workington Legion in fifth.
Maryport Social romped to a 5-1 win over Senhouse Street in the division 1 versus division 2 fixture. Social’s home victory puts them in their highest place in the league for probably 20 plus years as they now reside in third place in division 1. Senhouse Street sit fifth in division two but it was their very own David Bracken who delivered the only recordable break of the evening with 25 in his victory over Social Captain Colin Sealby.
Finally, Keswick’s Derwent Club moved into second place in division 2 with a 4-2 away win over Aspatria’s Sun Inn. Derwent’s Mark Forsyth was the proud owner of the fixtures top break with 25 in his victory over Jobby Dunn. Sun Inn prop up division 2 in sixth place.
Week 4 matches – November 4th 2015
Former champs warming up
Former top tier Window Outlet Cockermouth and District Snooker league champions, Workington Cons are getting better as each game passes. This became particularly evident in this week’s fixture as they came through 4-2 winners against a highly rated Workington Golf Club side.
With only four matches played it’s still a little early to suggest how the season will pan out but with these two teams featuring near the top of division 1 last season it’s probably fair to say they’ll both be challenging again.
A first frame break of 25 by last season’s leading player Richard McCarthy was enough for Cons to take a 1-0 lead and with Stuart Shepherd and Alan Moore winning the next two it was soon 3-0. Standing firm the Golf club came back with victories from Robert Sim and Bryan Walker but it was Cons’ Ryan Barker who wrapped up the win with a victory over Mark Carruthers in the last.
Division 1 league leaders, Station Road B made the short trip to Workington’s Senhouse Street Club and with relative ease they breezed to 6-0 win. Top breaks came from Station B’s Tony Elliott with 46 and Stephen O’Hagan with 26.
Had it not been for the two tier cross divisional format Flimby Social would now be sitting in second place just 1 point behind Station B on the back of their fourth straight win of the season, this time a 4-2 victory against Aspatria’s Sun Inn. The division 2 side are in the form of their lives with Kevin Kirkham leading the way yet again in recording breaks of 50 and 22 to crush Aspatria’s Andrew Scott. Flimby top division 2, with the Sun Inn in fifth.
Still searching for a win division 1’s Vets Club travelled to Station Road A and even though Paul Graham produced a frame winning break of 30 in the first at 3-1 down the Vets were staring defeat in the face. A 21 break by Steve Jackson allowed him to pile the pressure on Vets cueist Steve Garroway but with a classy finish it was the former County Semi-Finalist who pulled it back to 3-2. The final frame of the evening turned on one shot as a missed opportunity by Station B’s Grant Porter resulted in a frame winning 43 break by Vets captain, Kevin Basnett to bring the match to a 3-3 close. Vets move up to fifth in division 1 and Station Road A stay second in division 2.
Keswick’s Derwent Club produced the shock of the week as they defeated division 1’s Seaton Legion, 5-1. Travelling to the division 2 lakeside club proved to be a shaky journey as the only highlight for the Seaton side came from Paul Mostyn with contributions of 30 & 25 in his victory over Joe Bell.

7-a-side TKO round 1 – October 28th 2015
Station B move through cup first round
A break in the Window Outlet Cockermouth & District Snooker league fixtures made way for the 7-a-side TKO round 1 this week with some tasty ties and some interesting results making for a great start to the cup competition.
All division 1 clash between the Vets Club and Station Road B turned out to be the feature tie with the current top tier league champions, Station B coming out on top 4-2. The powerhouse side however didn’t have it all their own way. Had two black ball wins in frames one and four gone the other way the match result could have had a very different feel. Not to take anything away from the division 1 leaders they remained unfazed by this and took the match like champions do to advance into the quarter –finals.
Flimby Social remain on the crest of a wave as the defending champions defeated division 1’s Seaton Legion for the second time this season to advance to the next round, 4-2. The addition of 2 time County Pool Champion, Kevin Kirkham has given the Flimby side a real lift this season and in frame one he demonstrated why. A quick fire break of 61 in his defeat of Seaton’s Paul Mostyn showed he is no slouch on a snooker table as he gave his team the confidence to advance to the next round. Other Flimby breaks came from Paul Vickers (29) and Mike Walker (32) with Seaton’s best coming from Mike Dawson with 36.
A frame winning break of 24 from Workington Legion’s Ian Torley got his team off to a nice start in their tie against Station Road A. Nevertheless a similar winning contribution in frame two, this time 30 from Station Road A’s Mark Robertson soon wiped that out and the Station A side went on to win 4-2.
The United Club were another side who went on to beat opponents for the second time this season as they took out Maryport Social 4-2 to go one better in the competition than they did last year.
Senhouse Street Club took claim to the comeback of the round as from 3-0 down they defeated Keswick’s Derwent Club 4-3 in an all division 2 clash.
Week 3 matches – October 21st 2015
Seaton upset former champions
Division 2’s Flimby Social maintained their perfect start to the 2016/16 Window Outlet Cockermouth & District Snooker League season with a 4-2 win over division 1’s Seaton Legion.
A third win in a row sees the Flimby side open up a five point gap at the top of the table, all the more pleasing given their opponents were still on a high from their previous weeks heroics. Highlights of the match came from Flimby’s Kevin Kirkham with breaks of 21 and 22 however the best of the evening came from captain Geoff Banton with 30 in his victory over Paul Smith.
Defending division 1 champions Station Road B also took up an early lead in the top tier with 5-1 home win over division 2’s Workington Legion. Breaks came from Station B’s Alan McLeod with 30 and team mate Peter O’Hagan with 35.
The Vets club’s poor start to the season continued as they were turned over 5-1 away by fellow division 1 opponents Maryport Social. A second loss in three games sees the Vets side at the foot of the division 1 table. The only breaks of the match both came in the same frame as a contribution of 26 by Vets captain, Kevin Basnett was negated by another break of 26 this coming from Socials Paul Lister as he went on to win.
Division 2 teams United Club and Station Road A fought out a 3-3 draw in the battle of the Workington sides. A contribution of 28 from Andrew Mitchelhill and 25 from Clive Lister allowed the United Club side to take a 3-1 lead but it was Station B’s John Teasdale and Grant Porter who held up the rear guard to complete the comeback.
Workington Cons travelled to division 2’s Sun Inn with the division 1 side coming out on top 4-2. The Cons move up to second in division 1 and the Aspatria outfit stay in fifth in division 2.
Workington’s Senhouse Street made the trip to Keswick’s Derwent Club and came away with a 4-2 victory. In the battle of the division 2 sides the Senhouse win unfortunately did not see them overtake their opponents in the table as they still sit second and third respectively.
Week 2 matches – October 14th 2015
Seaton upset former champions
Division 1’s Seaton Legion produced the performance of the week in the Window Outlet Cockermouth & District Snooker League as they defeated 2011, 12 & 13 top tier former champions Workington Cons 4-2 and even more impressively, away from home.
The Legion victory was set up in the first two frames as Paul Mostyn (32 break) and Alan Stephenson (28 break) overcame Cons’ Alan Moore and Ryan Barker fairly comfortably. Seaton veteran Mike Dawson was the next to upset the form book as he took out last season’s leading player, Cons’ Richard McCarthy and with Karl Newton claiming the next the Legion were four to the good. Cons’ Mike Park and Stuart Shepherd managed to limit the damage for Cons as they won the last two but for a couple of pink and black finishes the score could have been a lot worse.
In the battle between two of division 1’s strongest sides last season’s champions, Station Road B travelled to the Vets club and in a closely contested match the score ended up 3-3. Notable performances came from Station B’s Alan McLeod as he hit a break of 38 in his win over Ryan Warwick but it was Peter O’Hagan who delivered the best of the evening in a commanding victory over Vets’ Steve Garroway with contributions of 40 & 27.
Workington Golf Club find themselves as the only team in division 1 to have played 2 and won 2 as they defeated Workington’s United Club 5-1. Golfers Phil Sorfleet and Rob Sim were the only break makers with a brace of 25’s.
Flimby Social maintained their positive start to life in division 2 with a 4-2 win over fellow divisional opponents Senhouse Street Club. Adding to last week’s 6-0 win Flimby now have more points than any other team in either division. Flimby’s Mike Walker and Paul Vickers produced their teams’ highest breaks with 27 and 24 but it was Senhouse’s’ Manny Stalker who delivered the matches’ biggest victory with contributions 22 & 32 in his 81-15 win over Shane Evitts.
Division 2’s Station Road A and Maryport Social could not be separated as a 3-3 draw prevailed. A Ryan Ismay contribution of 25 helped Social gain a 2-0 lead but in a fine comeback it was Station A’s Grant Porter who sealed the draw with a victory in the last, producing a break of 22 to boot.
Finally, Keswick’s Derwent Club couldn’t quite match last week’s heights as they drew 3-3 away with fellow division 2 opponents Workington Legion. Aaron Holmes produced the only recordable break of the match with 20 in his win over Derwent’s Roy Graves.
Due to an anomaly in the doubles draw this has now been re-done and can be viewed on the leagues website with all other competition draws at www.workingtonsnooker.co.uk.

Week 1 matches – October 8th 2015
Derwent off to a flier
The 2015/16 Window Outlet Cockermouth & District Snooker League season kicked off this week and with last season’s cross divisional format continuing some interesting score lines/ individual victories were produced.
Division 2’s Derwent Club delivered the most surprising team scoreline as they defeated division 1’s Vets Club 4-2, a team that was largely made up of last season’s top tier playoff side John Street Club. Leading 3-0 the Keswick side looked to be on their way to a one sided home win but with victories for Steve Garroway and Paul Graham in two of the last three frames the Vets’ cueists limited the damage.
Workington’s division 1 champions, Station Road B made short work of fellow club mates and division 2 side Station Road B with a thumping 5-1 win. The most unexpected statistic of the match came in frame five as Station B talisman, Peter O’Hagan went down to the A teams’ John Teasdale (24 break). Notable contributions came from Station B’s Tony Elliott with 31 & 27 and Station A’s Tom Thompson with 30.
Promoted teams United Club and Maryport Social faced each other with Workington’s United Club coming out on top 4-2. A great start for the United boys given the fact that Social pretty much had their strongest side out.
Workington Golf Club made the trip to Aspatria’s Sun Inn (division 2) this week and with a 4-2 victory the division 1 side started off this year’s campaign exactly where they left the last. Phil Sorfleet top scored for the Golf Club with 29 but it was Sun Inn’s Gary Miller who produced the evening’s highest with 34.
Last season’s division 1 runners up, Workington Cons also started with a victory as they defeated division 2’s Senhouse Street Club 4-2 away. The most impressive frame win of the match came in the last as Senhouse’s Manny Stalker beat double county champion Alan Moore with room to spare.
Finally, relegated Flimby Social made the perfect start to life in division 2 with a 6-0 home win over fellow divisional opponents Workington Legion.
Singles, Doubles, Trebles and Team Knockout draws have also been made with all prelim ties to be played by 2nd November.
